NOTES:
  • Sept. 2001 - February 2002: I'm currently in the US, doing research in Computer Graphics at Mississippi State University.
  • March 16 - March 25, 1999: I visited New York City and took a lot of photos of sites related to Malcolm X. Among them are the Masjid El Hajj Malik El Shabazz (Malcolm X Avenue and 116th Street), corner of Malcolm X Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the Audubon Ballroom, and Malcolm's and Betty's grave at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY
  • Lots of material displayed on this site has been copied by others for use on their sites without my approval! I strongly disapprove of this! I have invested lots of time and work. If you want to use material displayed on this site, please contact me first!
  • Thanks to all who have left feedback. Special thanks to those who have provided additional material or who have continued to motivate me.
Since hearing the name "Malcolm X" for the first time around 1988 in a rap song, I have been interested in him, his life and the changes he went through. Like Betty Shabazz, his wife, once said in J.H. Clark "Malcolm X - The man and his time", people who start to get interested in Malcolm soon get very possessive of him...
I can't help myself, but I can't go to a library without searching for information on Malcolm. Like many people, his autobiography fascinated me and made me gather more and more information.

Malcolm X Time Line Malcolm X was born as Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Louise and Earl Little.Louise Little was a mulatto born in Grenada in the British West Indies and Earl Little, a six-foot, very dark skinned man from Reynolds, Georgia, was a Baptist minister and organiser for Marcus Garvey, who wanted that all Afro-Americans go back to the land of their ancestors, Africa. Louise, his second wife, bore six children: Wilfred, Hilda, Philbert, Malcolm, Yvonne, and Reginald. Earl Little also had three children by a first wife: Ella, Earl, and Mary. Because of the father's advocacy for Garvey's movement, the whole family was terrorised by the Ku Klux Klan. To avoid any more harassment by these white racists, Little had to migrate with his family to Lansing, Michigan. It did not help. The white racists of Lansing killed Malcolm's father and laid him on a railway track, claiming he committed suicide. Alone and without money, Louise Little got more and more desperate, before the white authorities sent her to a mental hospital. Malcolm attended school until eighth grade living with different families. When his teacher stopped him from trying to become a lawyer, he dropped out of school and went to his older half sister, Ella, who lived in Boston. There, he took a job as a shoeshine boy at the Roseland Ballroom. A career as a hustler seemed a more tempting option, and he was soon peddling narcotics. He met a white girl called Laura who quickly became his girlfriend. Having a white girl and being a very good dancer, he soon was a notorious young man with crazy clothes and a haircut made to resemble the hair of white people, which he was very ashamed of later. But Roxbury proved to be too small for him, and in 1942 he took a job as a railroad dining-car porter, working out of Roxbury and New York. Settling in Harlem, New York, he became more and more involved in criminal activities. He robbed, worked as a pimp, and sold narcotics.

Malcolm X being interviewed in BBC Broadcasting House in January 1964 On 21 February 1965, Malcolm X was gunned down in broad daylight at a political rally at the Audobon Ballroom in Harlem, New York. The very embodiment of black power, Malcolm X gave his life for his cause. A freedom fighter, he was determined to achieve his aims - "by any means necessary," as he put it.

25. The Smoking Gun: The Malcolm X Files
A collection of primary sources relating to the assassination of malcolm X.
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/malcolmx/malcolmx.html
On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was shot to death as he delivered a speech in Manhattan's Audobon Ballroom. The following March, three men Talmadge Hayer, Norman Butler, and Thomas Johnson were convicted of murdering the 39-year-old black leader. Though prosecutors suggested at trial that the slaying was plotted as "an object lesson for Malcolm's followers," no direct evidence linked the Nation of Islam from which Malcolm had publicly broken to the killing, though that speculation still thrives. As another anniversary of the murder passes, we have compiled an extensive collection of documents chronicling the death of Malcolm X. Included in this package are New York Police Department, FBI, prison, hospital, grand jury, and medical examiner records that have never previously been disclosed. From ballistics evidence and eyewitness accounts to a chilling autopsy photo and the bullet-riddled documents found in Malcolm's breast pocket, these documents offer a remarkable picture of a brutal crime. We have arranged the records in several sections and suggest that you take the time to examine them all. The Smoking Gun thanks Kenneth R. Cobb, director of New York City's Municipal Archives, for his assistance in locating some of these records.

We want to talk right down to earth in a language that everybody here can easily understand. We all agree tonight, all of the speakers have agreed, that America has a very serious problem. Not only does America have a very serious problem, but our people have a very serious problem. America's problem is us. We're her problem. The only reason she has a problem is she doesn't want us here. And every time you look at yourself, be you black, brown, red, or yellow a so-called Negro you represent a person who poses such a serious problem for America because you're not wanted. Once you face this as a fact, then you can start plotting a course that will make you appear intelligent, instead of unintelligent. What you and I need to do is learn to forget our differences. When we come together, we don't come together as Baptists or Methodists. You don't catch hell 'cause you're a Baptist, and you don't catch hell 'cause you're a Methodist. You don't catch hell 'cause you're a Methodist or Baptist. You don't catch hell because you're a Democrat or a Republican. You don't catch hell because you're a Mason or an Elk. And you sure don't catch hell 'cause you're an American; 'cause if you was an American, you wouldn't catch no hell. You catch hell 'cause you're a black man. You catch hell, all of us catch hell, for the same reason.

Definition: Born Malcolm Little, Malcolm X (1925-1965) became a driving and motivational force behind the development of the Nation of Islam in the United States - as a result, he also represented the more militant side of the Civil Rights Movement. As a youth in Omaha he supported Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association, but at the same time his family was the target of harassment - even to the point of their house being set afire. His family moved to Lansing, Michigan, in 1929 and while there his father was killed by a streetcar. Forever after Malcolm believed that he had been assassinated by the Ku Klux Klan. Convicted of burglary in 1946 and sentenced to 10 years in prison, Malcolm began to experience a change of perspective while in prison as he became exposed to the message of Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam. This lead him to view white people as "Satan" who would never be willing to live with black as equals and in peace. After his release from prison he rose through the Black Muslim organization, eventually become a national spokesman. He did not, however, always agree with the Black Muslim leadership. In 1963, his feelings of bitterness towards the white establishment lead him to characterize the assassination of President Kennedy as an example of the "chickens coming home to roost." As a result, he was suspended from the Black Muslim movement. His continued personal transformations and disagreements with the leadership lead to a decisive break with the group in 1964.

your His father was a Baptist minister and follower of the Black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey, who advocated independent Black economic development and emigration to Africa. The family later moved to Lansing, Mich., where their home was burned down by a white supremacist group. The McCarthyite anticommunist witch-hunts had marginalized the left and purged the labor movement of radicals. The emerging civil rights movement focused on dismantling legal segregation in the South, but had little to offer African American workers in the North. The Nation partly filled this void by preaching Black self-reliance, bitterly denouncing racism in the North and advocating self-defense from racist violence. talk Malcolm was killed well before the newly independent countries he saw as modelslike Algeria, Ghana or Egyptdegenerated into military dictatorships.

MALCOLM X
May 19 1925 - February 21 1965 Malcolm X , a lot has been said about the man as witnessed by the numerous books written. All of the books, with the exception of one, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, penned by Alex Haley, is based on hearsay, conjecture and opinions. There are too, a lot of Internet sites devoted to Malcolm. Most of them are of the historical nature, while some of them were inspired by the "love" for him. I fall into the latter category. For me, my first introduction of Malcolm came when I was 7 years of age. It was 1963, the year that John Kennedy was assassinated. My uncle (who was more like a father to me) had taken me, as we often did, to this dining hall by the name of Father Divines. I recall being sadden by the death of Kennedy and had been crying throughout that day. When we arrived at the hall, one of the elders came up to me and said that he had heard from my uncle that I had been crying over the death of the president and he asked me "why"? I do not recall my exact words but I know that they weren't many, because I really didn't know why? Perhaps because the whole world was crying? Whatever my answer was, it prompted the elder to take me into a room to listen to a "black man" he said, "that he knows will change my life forever". That man was Malcolm X! And as prophetic as it might appear, the elder was right. From that point on, I could not get enough of him. And as I grew older, I looked to him for strength, guidance, wisdom and understanding. Every word he said, I clung onto like a newborn to its' mother. His footsteps are those that I follow. His heartbeat is that which I hear. For like the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, and before him, Master Fard, he was chosen to raise my people from the depths by which we were plunged. He was chosen to "go after the young people". And that he did. He found me. A little seven year old who had a lot of questions but was getting no answers. Three decades has passed since his murder, and the answers are ringing louder in my ears. Each one MUST reach one! Each one MUST teach one!

Volunteers ... Nature The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (the folks who put on the Flower Show every year) organized an excellent and informative conference this morning at Moore College of Art. Led off by an inspiring lecture by Judi Wicks of the delicious West Philly restaurant White Dog (and a mind-boggling array of other projects ), it was followed up with several break-out groups. I attended a session on event-planning and one on how to do shoe-string budget marketing, both of which featured veterans of the Flower Show. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has a long history in Philadelphia, but it is rapidly becoming an important player in the life of the city, well beyond traditional horticultural concerns. Malcolm X was an American revolutionary. His spirit will not die!
By Abdul Alkalimat, , 20 February 1995. Malcolm X was considered a dangerous leader because he was listened to by black activists, he was respected by the black masses, and he was attracting white revolutionary youth as well, and for this he was murdered in 1965; The system keeps trying to kill him over and over again. But his soul and spirit live on!

The interview, conducted by poet and jazz critic A.B. Spellman, appeared simultaneously in Monthly Review and Revolution The Muslims tell Negroes to be proud of their African heritage, to make a new identity for themselves by adopting an X or a Muslim surname and dropping their "slave name," thereby severing all ties with a history of subservience to whites. The Muslims have urged Negroes to be polite in their dealings with whites and to be non-violent, even if provoked. But if attacked, the Muslims say, a Negro should defend himself by any means at his disposal. The Muslim solution to the race problem in America is separation of the races, either in the allocation to Negroes of several states in the South or the repatriation of Negroes to Africa. (The separatist solution has been in the programs of several movements varying in size and appeal since the early nineteenth century, culminating in the Garvey movement which, though irreparably fragmented, still has considerable appeal in many major Negro communities.) Estimates of Muslim membership have ranged from 10,000 to 250,000.
