BBC's The Day of the Triffids
A heavy drum beat; a sickly green light floods the screen; highlighting a series of faces as they stare upwards. Eerie choral music complements the air of impending danger. Something wet and leathery flies out, striking a screaming woman. In the last view the 'tongue' slithers towards the viewer, obscuring all else. So begins the BBC's sensitive adaptions of one of the great escapist SF novels. It was a wonderfully chilling opening, so good in fact that the actual episode that followed on was almost an anti-climax.
John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids has long been regarded as a classic of British science fiction. Its publication led to some critics heralding the author as the new H G Wells. While that claim is debatable, there is no doubting the appeal of the book. Many SF readers (myself included) cut their teeth on this tale in their schooldays. David Pringle, in his excellent book 100 Best SF Novels Survivors , a programme that Triffids draws from a great deal in look and understated manner.

BBC4 screened a fascinating documentary on the late science fiction writer John Wyndham tonight. I'm not a science fiction fan, but I like Wyndham's work, mainly because his stories are grounded on earth with not a far-off galaxy in sight. Most of his books were written after World War II and focus on scientific catastrophes that wreak havoc on human populations. They seem remarkably prescient today given all our problems with genetic engineering, climate change and the like. I first got introduced to Wyndham as an impressionable 14-year-old when we studied Day of the Triffids in our English class. A couple of years later we also studied The Chrysalids . And then, of my own volition, I went on to read The Midwich Cuckoos The Trouble With Lichen and The Kraken Wakes Watching this documentary tonight makes me want to go back to re-read some of these books. JAKE REILLY, the night watchman, made his usual round without any apprehension of danger. He was even yawning as he left the laboratory wing and came into the main assembly hangar. For a moment he paused on the threshold, looking at the structure in the centre of the floor. He wondered vaguely how they were getting on with it. Mighty long job, building a thing like that. It hadn't looked any different for months, as far as he could see. But Jake could not see far. The towering object of his inspection was so closely scaffolded that only here and there could the dim lights filter between the poles to be reflected back from a polished metal surface. 'Workin' inside it mostly, now, I s'pose,' he told himself.

Categories This Question Is Answered: digg_skin = 'compact'; digg_window = 'new'; What does the John Wyndham title “Consider Her Ways” mean? 06 Dec 2006 13:54 Report This 1961 novella takes its title from an old saying in the Bible: “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.” Jane, a former scientist, volunteers for an experiment to test a mind-altering drug. She finds herself trapped in a grotesquely huge body, in a future world where men have died out, and women have survived by imitating the social organisation of ants. A few, like Jane’s alter ego “Mother Orchis” spend their lives bearing children (usually in batches of four) while most of the rest are assigned to look after the mothers, the children and do the heavy work.
She later finds that there is an elite group called Doctors – scientists and historians – who mastermind the whole thing , and who alone have knowledge of the past, and archaic skills such as reading and writing. In a bizarre conversation with one of the Doctors, Jane finds that men were originally wiped out by a virus. The women could now develop the technology to start breeding them again, but find their own society happier and more peaceful than what they know of the old one. Biography
John Wyndham
John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris (aka John Wyndham) (10 July 1903 - 11 March 1969)
Overview
Wyndham is one of the few Science Fiction authors which found early acceptance among non-SF readers. Although he began publishing stories in 1931. His rise to prominance happened after WWII when his apocolyptic outlook echoed the fears of many. Starting with The Day of the Triffids (1951), Wyndham continued where H.G. Wells left off. However, Wyndham didn't just rehash a disaster motif, he reached down into the psyche of the day to criticize the seeming lack of social change. His characters often confront more of a mindless reaction in their fellow humans than any external danger. Wyndham had a string of hits that had many similarities including the novels: The Kraken Wakes The Chrysalids The Midwich Cuckoos Trouble with Lichen (1960) and the short story collections: Jizzle Tales of Gooseflesh and Laughter The Seeds of Time Critics have concentrated on The Day of the Triffids The Kraken Wakes and The Midwich Cockoos . IMHO, this is because of the sales success of these books and the fact that both

The day of the triffids - John Wyndham
May 2007 The triffids are a monstrous species of stinging plant; they walk, they talk, they dominate the world. The narrator of this novel wakes up in hospital to find that, by missing the end of the world, he has survived to witness a new world. But the new world that awaits him is fantastic and horrific.
