John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris was a prolific writer of novels and short stories, all published under variations of his name. John Beynon, Lucas Parkes, Wyndham Parkes, John Beynon Harris and Johnson Harris were all called into service as a nom de plume at various points during his writing career , but it was as John Wyndham that he achieved lasting fame. Wyndham's position within the literary canon is a variable one, for at times he has been admired for writing science fiction which appeals beyond the normal readership for the genre, while some critics dismiss his major novels as 'cosy catastrophes' with little depth or insight and thus easily dismissed. Early Years John Wyndham's early life was far from settled. He was born in 1903 in Knowle, Warwickshire. His parents separated eight years later, and John and his brother Vivian spent the rest of their formative years in many different towns and boarding schools across England. After leaving school in 1921, he tried his hand at various careers including farming, law and

    Profile
Novelist and short story writer. Particularly remembered writing as John Wyndham his real name was John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris and he used various combinations of his name during his career. Before the Second World War he wrote as John Beynon, John Beynon Harris and Wyndham Parkes. He was born in Knowle , Warwickshire, the son of a barrister and lived at Edgbaston, Birmingham until 1911 when his parents separated. After that he moved around the country with his mother and younger brother, the writer Vivian Beynon Harris. After school he tried his hand at several jobs including farming, the law, art and advertising. He began writing science fiction stories, influenced by the work of H.G. Wells, and found a niche for his work in American magazines. In the mid 1930's he had his work published in British magazines and in book form, particularly in Tales of wonder , the first British science fiction magazine, which was published between 1937 and 1942. During the war he worked as a censor, including active service in France. He took a while to regain his writing strengths before finding great success with The day of the triffids in 1951 which describes the invasion of Earth by strange plants. He could take a fantastic idea and, through strong narrative and characterisation, turn a potentially ordinary science fiction tale into a miniature work of art. From a disaster of some kind he would develop a complex story of human triumph in adversity.

    Born: 7/10/1903 Knowle Warwickshire England
Died: 3/11/1969 England About the Author
The English novelist John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris (1903-69) wrote
his finest work under the pseudonym John Wyndham, though he had at least
seven others, all permutations of his lengthy name. Raised in Edgbaston,
Birmingham, he attended a number of English prep schools and began writing as
a sideline, while trying to make a career variously in law, farming,
commercial art and advertising. He began publishing stories in the early
1930s, many in American magazines, but he did not find his voice as the
writer John Wyndham until he returned from service in World War II. The world had changed, and it was now gripped by the possibility of a nuclear apocalypse. Wyndham was fascinated by apocalyptic scenarios, and his 1951 novel The Day of the Triffids transformed him as a writer. His distinctive approach to fantasy is often classified as science fiction, though its popularity far exceeds the genre. Following the publication of The Day of

It would be a misnomer to categorize this as science fiction even though it does concern the discovery of an anti-aging drug derived from some previously undiscovered lichen that grows in some Manchurian patches. This time around Wyndham set out to write a non too subtle social commentary, reflecting on the position of women in society first, and the potentially devastating effects of prolonging life second. THe protagonist, Diana Brackley, is a gifted biochemist who, upon graduating from Cambridge with highest honors, begins as a research scientist at a famous lab privately run by a world-renowned scientist Dr. Saxover. All this to the horror of her mother, whose idea of life is that women are born to wed and breed. While at the lab, Diana stumbles across a discovery whose implications she fails to realize until, some time later, she begins to suspect that her boss has been holding out on her. She goes into clandestine research herself only to find out that the rare lichen retards metabolism by a factor of up to five. In other words, it slows down ageing. She ponders the implications of this "gift" to mankind for a long time and then abruptly quits her job to start her own cosmetics (beauty) company called Nefertiti, Ltd. She keeps this stuff under wraps for over ten years and even her former boss, and now widower, has no clue about it although he has been secretly injecting his two children with the drug. Eventually, of course, things come to a head when Dr. Saxover spills the beans to his daughter and son, and his son proceeds to tell his wife whose greed seem to be her defining characteristic. Anyway, soon Britain is in social turmoil as rumors spin out of control. It turns out Diana has been using her position to create an "army" of socialite wives with very important husbands who would block any attempt to hide the discovery once it becomes known. Quite the opposite of Dr. Saxover's concern (which correctly envisions violence), she frets about people suppressing the knowledge. Anyway, her plan sort of works, and the book ends on a high note with Britons being promised the stuff by the pound, and all marching happily ever after into starvation from overpopulation and economic distress.

    The John Wyndham Archive
John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris (1903-1969) is one of the most important and widely read British writers of science fiction. Wyndham began publishing science fiction in the 1930s but it was only after the Second World War, following refinements to his writing style and subject matter, that he gained critical and popular acclaim. Wyndham achieved particular success with The Day of the Triffids The Kraken Wakes (1953) (also known as Out of the Deeps The Chrysalids (1955) and The Midwich Cuckoos (1957) (also known as Village of the Damned ). These carefully crafted stories instantly captured the imagination of the public worldwide and have since become classics of science fiction. Wyndham's stylish explorations of the social effects of sudden change not only reflect the anxieties of post-War Britain in particular but also possess wider and enduring relevance and popularity. The John Wyndham Archive is the author's Estate Collection. It contains a large number of holograph manuscripts and corrected typescripts of his novels and short stories (including several unpublished and incomplete works), non-fiction articles and scripts for radio, screen and stage plays. John Wyndham was a very private man and, wishing to be judged solely on his work, instructed that his personal papers be destroyed. However, the Archive does contain large quantities of letters to and from various editors and publishers, some fan mail and a collection of over 350 letters to his life-long partner Grace Wilson that reveal Wyndham's thoughts and experiences during the Second World War. There are also some taped conversations between Wyndham and his brother, Vivian Beynon Harris.

"THE RETURN OF THE TRIFFIDS . . ." THE JOHN WYNDHAM ARCHIVE
This exhibition consists largely of material from the Estate Collection of John Wyndham, whose science fiction novels are among the most potent descriptions of the collective unconscious of 1950s Britain. In his four major novels The Day of the Triffids The Kraken Wakes The Chrysalids (1955) and The Midwich Cuckoos (1957) the seductive dread of invasion is present in different forms. Whether it be from carnivorous plants, aliens from the ocean depths, post-atomic war mutants or children with paranormal powers, the threat to a normality so painfully won after the Second World War is as much from social change as from invading monsters. The shadows of the Cold War and Britain's loss of Empire creep fitfully though his fictions as his characters find their stability undermined and their moral values questioned. The Wyndham Archive contains original manuscripts/typescripts of most of his major works, as well as drafts, outlines, and so far unpublished material. It contains several thousand pages of letters, to and from publishers, editors, and fans, as well as a unique collection of letters written to Grace Wilson (later his wife) between 1939 and 1945, which shed light both on his own thoughts and the events of the War years. What is on display can only be selective, but it is hoped that it shows a picture of the field through the work of one of its greatest exponents and demonstrates the value of the science fiction collections in the Special Collections and Archives department of the University Library. Within a number of days following its acquisition it was used in research. We hope, therefore, that the "return of the triffids" to public view will encourage further use.

Darkside Press is pleased to announce a landmark event for devotees of the best in science fiction: a new collection of stories by John Wyndham! One of the great masters of speculative fiction, John Wyndham was one of the first to leap from genre categorization to mainstream popularity. While his novels such as Day of the Triffids The Midwich Cuckoos and Chocky have been perpetually in print for most of the past fifty years and enjoyed adaptations for radio, film, and television, much of his short fiction has not received the same attention. This book (the first in a series of John Wyndham "readers") presents an eclectic collection of stories that demonstrate the versatility of this remarkable writer. Many of the tales presented herein have previously been available only in scarce publications; one ("Blackmoil") has never been published in any form at all. An essential volume for the Wyndham collector or an excellent introduction for new readers. We must add a word of warning, our previous Darkside Press volume, the Fritz Leiber collection

    http://members.tripod.com/~wyndham/essay.htm
John Wyndham: A different science-fiction writer
        1997 Essay, GGS
John Wyndham’s science fiction novels, in this instance The Chrysalids and The Day of the Triffids, do not focus on incredible and unbelievable developments in technology, as do novels of many of the stereotypical science fiction writers, yet instead focus on how the people; particularly the protagonist, deal with the many uncomfortable situations they are faced in the frightening world of the future. The Day of the Triffids is perhaps Wyndham’s best known novel, and tells of explosions in space blinding a large proportion of the population, at the same time as an agricultural experiment goes horribly wrong, and millions of triffids, carnivorous plants, populate every corner of the globe, threatening mankind’s very existence. In The Day of the Triffids, Wyndham speculates on many things. He contemplates how the people would deal with wide-spread blindness, and how they would accept the danger of carnivorous plants on the loose - not a contemporary invention, simply basic biology working against us. In his writings he considers how the remaining people of the world would deal with such a situation, that changing situations do require new ways, and what new ways would gain acceptance. Speculation about how people would react widespread blindness is an integral part of The Day of the Triffids.
