John Wyndham (1903-1969) English science-fiction writer, who gained fame with his catastrophe novels The Day of the Triffids The Kraken Wakes (1953), and The Chrysalids (1955). The central theme in Wyndham's major works is the struggle for survival in extreme situations. His heroes are often ordinary people, who try to sustain civilized values, when the normal social system has collapsed. The famous American writer Stephen King has called Wyndham "perhaps the best writer of science fiction that England has ever produced". "The way I came to miss the end of the world - well, the end of the world I had known for close on thirty years - was sheer accident: like a lot of survival, when you come to think of it. In the nature of things a good many somebodies are always in hospital, and the law of averages had picked on me to be one of them a week or so before. It might just as easily have been the week before that-in which case I´d not be writing now: I´d not be here at all." (from The Day of the Triffids John Wyndham was born John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris in the village of Knowle, in Warwickshire. His father, George Beynon Harris, was a barrister. Gertrude Parkes, Wyndham's mother, was the daughter of an ironmaster. Untill 1911, he lived in Edgbaston, Birmingham. When Wyndham was eight, his parents separated. Wyndham and his brother, Vivian Beynon Harris, who also became a writer, moved with their mother from place to place. However, their childhood was not unhappy; "we loved our mother and each other and we were as close as it is possible for a family to be," recalled Vivian Beynon Harris later.

#5: The Day of the Triffids (1951) by John Wyndham
“You know, one of the most shocking things about it is to realize how easily we have lost a world that seemed so safe and certain.”
John Wyndham
Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris (1903-1969) first published pulp stories in the 30s, but it wasn’t until this novel was published and he changed his pen name to just “John Wyndham” (thought by many to be a new writer because of it) that his career first took off. Triffids came from a long tradition of British science fiction, dating back as far as Mary Shelley’s The Last Man (1826), which features disaster stories. Brian Aldiss refers to this narrative type disparagingly as “ cosy catastrophes ,” and Triffids is often held up as the quintessential novel of this typemiddle-class values couched in mindless adventure narrative. Personally, I don’t think that’s necessarily a fair description of Wyndham’s work, but this story is certainly about whites rebuilding white civilization.
The storyline is easy. Bill Masen, the narrator, wakes up one day in a hospital after a terrible tragedy (think

From SCIFIPEDIA John Wyndham (John Wyndham Lucas Parkes Beynon Harris) ( July 10 March 11 ) wrote under various combinations of his many names, but is best known for his science fiction as John Wyndham. He began writing SF during the , and most of his early work has a distinct pulp flavor, although he was a better stylist and created more realistic characters than most of his peers. Although several of his early works were set in outer space, Wyndham's first major work was The Day of the Triffids , also published as Revolt of the Triffids ), which combined aspects of an alien invasion novel with a traditional disaster story. After humanity is afflicted with nearly universal blindness, a mobile, carnivorous plant threatens to become the top of the food chain. Hollywood turned the story into a predictable monster movie , but the BBC produced a rarely seen but more loyal version. Recently

AUTHOR INFO

John Wyndham was one of the most prominent and influential British SF authors during the genre's formative years in that country. Though mocked — in, I'd like to think, a good natured way — by several authors who came along after him for his old-fashioned and occasionally quaint approach to his stories (J. G. Ballard coined the term "cozy catastrophe story," to refer to Wyndham's end of the world scenarios in which civilization is wiped out but for a handful of middle-class English survivors), he continues to loom large as an important figure in the genre, though admittedly moreso in his homeland than in America. Next to The Day of the Triffids (one of the few SF novels actually to introduce a new word into the English language)

From 1930-1939 he wrote stories of various kinds under different names, almost exclusively for American publications, while also writing detective novels. After military service in the Second World War, he went back to his writing and decided to try a modified form of science fiction, a form he called `logical fantasy'. Several of his novels have become classics, including THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS, THE CHRYSALIDS AND the KRAKEN WAKES. He died in 1969.

The Inbuilt Hypocrisy of the Writer
Saturday, 30. December 2006, 19:12:10 haiku Alan Moore writing John Wyndham Amongst the presents I got for Christmas this year was a copy of Alan Moore's From Hell , a graphic novel based on the story or legend of that seminal serial killer, Jack the Ripper. I found it to be a fascinating piece of work and I have, all of a sudden, conceived an interest in the Ripper case. However, I don't intend to write here about From Hell or Jack the Ripper. I mention From Hell because a certain section of it reminded me of something I've been meaning to write for a very long time. In Chapter Nine, the officer investigating the case expresses his disgust at the ghouls who have gathered at the scene of one of the murders, some of them selling souvenirs, such as walking sticks: "It's all a load of tom, shifting a few old walking sticks off the back of some poor murdered tart. And 'er barely cold. Makes me sick." He goes on to say: "Mark my words, in 'undred years there'll still be cunts like 'im, wrapping these killings up in supernatural twaddle. Making a living out of murder."

    THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS
    by John Wyndham
Reviewed by Steven H Silver If you only know about The Day of the Triffids from watching the 1963, Steve Sekely film, you are definitely missing something by ignoring the novel. Unlike the movie (as is nearly always the case), the novel has a chance to flesh out both characters and situations. Triffids, mobile carnivorous plants, have been known for several years by the time the novel opens. Kept in gardens around the world for their exoticness, most triffids are kept without their attack frond, which is capable of blinding and killing an human. Attacked by a triffid in his youth, Bill Masen has acquired a slight immunity to the plants as well as an interest in them. He worked at a triffid oil processing farm until a triffid attack left him blind. The novel opens with Masen in hospital the night before his bandages are to come off. During the night, he hears people exclaming about the most incredible meteor shower ever seen. A once in a lifetime event which he misses because he can't take off his bandages yet. The next morning, when Masen awakes, the world is strangely silent. When no one comes to remove his bandages, Masen does so himself. He discovers that somehow almost the entire world has gone blind. Although Wyndham never exactly explains why the meteor shower has left everyone blind, he gives enough clues to allow the reader to make a reasonable judgment. Wyndham also exposes the saying "In the Kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king" to be false. Although Masen and others have their vision, they are also objects of desire for the blind. On several occassions, Masen finds himself captured, or nearly captured, by roving bands of blind men who need a sighted slave in order to survive.
