The Defiant Imagination, by Max Wyman
By George Fetherling From the late '60s to the late '90s, Max Wyman was by turns the Vancouver Sun's dance critic, music critic, drama critic, arts columnist, and book-review editor Since retiring, he has represented Canada on a UNESCO cultural-policy commission. All that experience seems to figure in this "manifesto for wholesale change in the way we as a society regard and value cultural activity". But even though the book is clear and firm"I am convinced more than ever that we need a cultural contract between government and society," a kind of charter of cultural rightsThe Defiant Imagination: Why Culture Matters is hardly a manifesto in the usual tub-thumping sense. The nature of the subject requires a lot of summarizing before the thesis picks up speed. For example, a brief history of opposition to government support for the arts segues into a survey of arguments used by arts organizations in trying to get private-sector money, including the ever-popular "economic impact" chart, showing the spinoff benefits of every dollar spent on culture. Without gainsaying their approaches, he gives down-to-earth advice to grant- and gift-seeking groups, which often alienate potential patrons by wolf-crying and condescension.

Whaddaya mean, "We don't know about the box"?
Readers deliver a dizzying spectrum of interpretations of the mysterious goings-on in David Lynch's sexy, scintillating "Mulholland Drive." Pages 1
The article "Everything you wanted to know about 'Mulholland Drive,'" by Bill Wyman, Max Garrone and Andy Klein, generated a big batch of letters, as viewers tried to piece together the sensational film's puzzles against the interpretation provided in the story. A sampling is below, in which persuasive and provocative new interpretations of the film alternate with ... rather more far-fetched ones. The original article, incidentally, has been revised and updated. Readers are warned that major plot points of the film are discussed in detail in the letters below. The writers wish it noted that the remark, oft-disparaged by readers who wrote in, to the effect that "We don't know about the box" was a joke.

max wyman, in his biography of Hart, tells us that she has struggled max wyman concludes his biography of Evelyn Hart with the following words
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/women/002026-602-e.html
Evelyn Hart
Principal Dancer, Royal Winnipeg Ballet Evelyn Hart
Evelyn Hart, world-renowned ballerina and principal dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, had a dream: she wanted "to be a dancer who would put Canada on the map." (Enright, p. 12) In 1966, at the age of ten, while living in Peterborough, she was inspired by the beauty of Veronica Tennant's dancing, as Juliet, in a televised performance of Romeo and Juliet by the National Ballet of Canada. Evelyn began to dance at home and to admire pictures of ballerinas in books, which her mother borrowed for her from the local library. Soon afterwards, Evelyn convinced her parents to let her enroll in dance classes at the YWCA and at age thirteen she won a place in the summer session of the National Ballet School. In 1970, when her family moved to Dorchester, Ontario, she enrolled in formal dance classes, in neighbouring London, at a school of dance operated by Dorothy and Victoria Carter. Hart has said of the Carters, "They are indelibly etched on my soul for life. Without them I wouldn't be where I am. To this day I attribute my whole being in dance to those two women. It is because of the Carters that I am a dancer." (Wyman, p. 42) Evelyn Hart attended the National Ballet School in the fall of 1971 but was forced to leave after three months because she suffered from anorexia nervosa. In 1973, after she regained her health and confidence, she auditioned for and subsequently accepted a place in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Professional Division where she trained under David Moroni.

wyman, max. 2000. Royal Winnipeg Ballet . In Susan Macpherson, ed. Works choreographed for the Winnipeg Ballet (Source wyman, max. 1978.
http://www.dcd.ca/pih/gwenethlloyd.html
BIOGRAPHY Born: 1901, Eccles, Yorkshire, England
Died: 1993, Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada Gweneth Lloyd began social and fancy dancing at age thirteen. She loved to dance and was determined to make it her career. She attended the Liverpool Physical Training College and during her first teaching job she reconnected with movement when she became interested in Ruby Ginner's Revived Greek Dance. Historian Anna Blewchamp argues that it was the emphasis on expressivity and musicality in the Revived Greek Dance that characterized Lloyd's choreography. In 1924, Lloyd left her job to study with Ginner full time. She complemented this training by studying Cecchetti and RAD ballet technique eventually becoming an examiner for the RAD. In 1926, Lloyd and a colleague opened a school in Leeds where she befriended a student named Betty Hey (later Farrally). The two immigrated to Canada settling in Winnipeg in 1938. Betty was 23, Gweneth, 36. Upon their arrival, the pair opened the Canadian School of Ballet. There was an ample supply of dance teachers in Winnipeg in 1938, but Lloyd and Farrally wanted to contribute more than yet another training facility. They realized that to really foster ballet's development in their new prairie home, they needed to educate potential audience members. Within months of their arrival, they initiated the Winnipeg Ballet Club and offered free tuition to anyone accepted; they also held monthly lecture-demonstrations open to the public. They soon connected with a dynamic jack-of-all-trades named David Yeddeau. This "holy trinity", so called by later Royal Winnipeg Ballet artistic director Arnold Spohr, formed an unstoppable team that brought ballet to new heights in Canada. Lloyd was the choreographer, Farrally the rehearsal director and Yeddeau added experience in set design and construction, wardrobe and make-up, and stage management.

Wyman, Max. " 'You can lead a fool to a book but you can't make them think': Author has frank words for the religious right," The Vancouver Sun (British Columbia), October 26, 2000 J.K. Rowling no longer wears the red tresses that became familiar to millions when her fictional creation, Harry Potter, launched her into the stratosphere of international media fame. She has dyed her shortened locks a generic blond, leaving the dark roots showing. Woman's privilege, we wonder. But no: the long red hair and bangs were making her too recognizable, she says. The new look frames intense, dark eyes and a pale, serious face. Here on one of the most lavishly hyped publicity tours in literary history, she has just handled a half-hour question session with a group of selected children, and another half-hour of polite but mostly lackadaisical quizzing by the Vancouver media. She's an old hand at this by now. The fourth book in the series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, has just been launched, with hardback sales in Canada alone topping a million. Superstar? Of course, but there's a no-nonsense, unpretentious air about the way she handles herself.
