While travelling as a diplomat for Henry VIII he developed his interest in Continental poetry; he was the first English poet to use the Italian forms of the sonnet and terza rima, and the French rondeau. His translation of the Penitential Psalms is based on a version by the Italian poet Pietro Aretino. In the course of his career Wyatt served his King Henry in a variety of offices, including thos.. Sir Thomas Wyatt
Sir Thomas Wyatt was educated at St. John's College, Cambridge and served in the court of Henry VIII, holding several senior overseas positions including that of ambassador to Charles V (1537-1539), following his knighthood in 1535. He was not always in favour at court, however, and was twice imprisoned in the Tower of London. Together with Henry Howard , Earl of Surrey, Wyatt introduced the sonnet into English literature from Italy, providing it with its final rhyming couplet. His works, which were not published until after his death, include Certayne Psalms... drawen into English meter (1549) and a collection of poems published in Tottel's Miscellany A Revocation

Wendy We're back at Tudor England, talking with our very important guest: Sir Thomas Wyatt. Sir Tom, in last week's interview you spoke about beginning your diplomatic career. Could you please tell us your most exciting moment as a Tudor diplomat...? Sir Tom Aye...I suppose that would have been when the Spaniards captured me in 1527, just before the sacking of Rome. Wendy I remember you telling me about this. At that time, you were on a mission to the Pope...? Sir Tom Aye.. I went with Sir John Russel as his esquire and equerry, when King Harry sent him to give aid to Pope Clement VII. Sir John had the misfortune to fall from his horse and break his leg at Narni, a small town not far from Florence. His injury meant I had to act in his stead to best serve the King. I was captured on my return to Narni and Sir John. I knew the soldiers planned to ransom me, but I made my escape before any money changed hands. Not long after that, Sir John and I escaped from Rome when the Duc of Borbon's army began its bloody assault on the Holy city. Never was I more relieved to make my return to English soil. The following year I went to Calais, where I served the King as his Marshal until 1532.

Thomas Wyatt Bagshawe wrote the first scientific study of penguin breeding development and donated several valuable specimens to Norwich Castle Museum. Today his legacy lives on, whereby the descendents of the penguins he studied on Graham Land, the Gentoos ( Pygoscelis papua ), continue to nest in the remains of the whaleboat shelter that provided the base for his study.
Thomas Wyatt Bagshawe was born on 18 th April 1901 in Dunstable. He read geology at Gonville and Caius College at Cambridge University, but abandoned his studies to join the British Imperial Expedition to Graham Land, Antarctica between 1920-1922. The expedition intended to set up camp at Andvord Bay on the Danco Coast of Graham Land but was cut short due to lack of funds. Thomas Bagshawe and one other team member, Maxime Charles Lester, bravely decided to stay on and complete the mission. This overwintering party of just two men was (and still remains to this day) the smallest ever overwintering party on Antarctica! The pair set up camp in January 1921 at Waterboat Point on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula; the area is now an official historic site under the Antarctic Treaty.

Farewell Love - a poem by Thomas Wyatt
Farewell , Love, and all thy laws for ever:
Thy baited hooks shall tangle me no more.
Senec and Plato call me from thy lore,
To perfect wealth my wit for to endeavour.
In blind error when I did persever,
Thy sharp repulse, that pricketh aye so sore,
Hath taught me to set in trifles no store,
And scape forth, since liberty is lever*. [desirable]
Therefore farewell, go trouble younger hearts,
    And in me claim no more authority;
With idle youth go use thy property, And thereon spend thy many brittle darts. For, hitherto though I've lost my time, Me lusteth no longer rotten boughs to climb. Farewell Love - a poem by Thomas Wyatt

Anne Boleyn and Sir Thomas Wyatt Poems 1527-1537
    Scanned by Douglas Dowell.
Scanned by Lara E. Eakins at Tudor History The relationship between Anne Boleyn and Thomas Wyatt, Tudor poet, is still fiercely debated. There is a strong tradition, both from Catholic sources and from George Wyatt, Thomas' grandson, that Wyatt was one of Anne's admirers; her enemies and detractors have often alleged an affair between the two, and Wyatt was one of those arrested in May 1536. He was, however, never charged and soon released. The earliest version of the recusant tradition seems to date from Mary I's reign, when Nicholas Harpsfield alleged an affair between the two of which Wyatt informed the king when he intended to marry Anne. (Harpsfield claims that Wyatt was told by Henry not to mention the matter to anyone; a rather atypical reaction, given his reaction to Katheryn Howard 's premarital promiscuity!) The Wyatt tradition, however, is firm that Anne never responded to the poet's affection improperly. Anne Unattainable (Sonnet 3) This is Wyatt's most famous poem relating to Anne Boleyn; the clear impression given is that of a one-sided pursuit by the poet rather than a relationship between the two. It sounds as though he has to make himself break his fascination with Anne. By this stage, anyway, only one man would have been in the running: Henry.

In 1974 a portrait of the traitor Sir Thomas Wyatt the Younger was sold anonymously at Christie's (Figs. 1-3). It was heavily overpainted and, at some date, had been re-identified and labelled 'Henry 6'. The panel is a version of a portrait I had researched in the 1960s, when compiling the catalogue of the National Portrait Gallery's Tudor and early Stuart portraits. (1) The appearance of the painting at Christie's prompted at the time the bringing together of the three surviving good versions of the portrait in the conservation department of the Victoria and Albert Museum, of which I was then director. I did not publish the conclusions reached, largely because there were gaps ... Already a Member?

Thomas Bagshawe and Charles Freeman, who succeeded Bagshawe as curator in 1936, visited many of the Scandinavian museums which were at the forefront of folk life museums in Europe. Both were profoundly influenced by the Scandinavian example and they sought ways to introduce the ideas and methods they had witnessed into Luton Museum. In 1938 a rural industries gallery was opened at Wardown designed on Scandinavian principles with built in cases and freestanding exhibits. In 1954 Bagshawe offered all his collection to Luton Museum. The archaeology and occupational collections were a gift conditional upon the purchase of his ethnographic collection (furniture, treen, ceramics etc.) and the provision of adequate display facilities for the illustration of Bedfordshire occupations. The rural life gallery at Wardown survived until the early 1970s when the curator decided to change the gallery to one showing aspects of Luton life and history.
