    Notes on Life and Works
Sir Thomas Wyatt was born at Allington Castle, Kent, in 1503, the son of Henry Wyatt and Anne Skinner. He was educated at St. John's College Cambridge, become a diplomat in the service of Henry VIII about 1526 and travelled to Italy first in 1527. After a brief imprisonment for his affair with Anne Boleyn in 1536, the king's second wife who was executed for treason, Wyatt went to Spain as English ambassador to Charles V from 1537 to 1539. In 1541, after the fall of Thomas Cromwell, Wyatt was arrested again and charged with treason but his release followed shortly. He died October 11, 1542, and was buried at Sherborne. Having separated from his wife Elizabeth Brooke, daughter of Lord Cobham, Wyatt was survived by his mistress Elizabeth Darrell and their son Francis.

      Wyatt, Sir Thomas
Wyatt, Sir Thomas, , English poet and statesman, father of Sir Thomas Wyatt. He served in various capacities under Henry VIII and was knighted in 1536. It is generally agreed he had been the lover of Anne Boleyn before her marriage to the king. Greatly influenced by the works of the Italian love poets, Wyatt produced the first group of sonnets in English, modeled chiefly after Petrarch. Besides sonnets, he wrote lyrics, rondeaus, satires, and a paraphrase of the penitential psalms. None of his poems appeared in his lifetime. Ninety-six, however, were published in Tottel's Miscellany (1557), an important early anthology.

    INTRODUCTION
    Biographical Information
The son of Sir Henry Wyatt of Yorkshire and Anne Skinner Wyatt of Surrey, Thomas Wyatt was born in Kent around 1503. Wyatt admired his father, a member of the Privy Council of Henry VII and Henry VIII, and regretted his own lot by comparison at times. It has been difficult to separate Wyatt's private and public life from his poetry. From the start of his career at Henry VIII's court, he quickly succeeded; within the span of only several years Thomas Cromwell, Henry's secretary and counsel on religious matters, had become his patron. Having traveled to France and to Rome, he received a request from Queen Catherine of Aragon to translate Petrarch's De remediis utriusque fortunae in 1527. Wyatt translated

That now are wild, and do not remember
That sometime they put themselves in danger
To take bread at my hand; and now they range
Busily seeking with a continual change. Thanked be fortune, it hath been otherwise

When her loose gown from her shoulders did fall,
And she me caught in her arms long and small, And therewithal sweetly did me kiss, It was no dream; I lay broad awaking.
