Feist . Her most recent title in the Wars of Light and Shadow series, Stormed Fortress , culminates more than twenty years of carefully evolved ideas. The cover images on the books, both in the US and abroad, are her own paintings and depict her vision of characters and setting.

Janny Wurts has written numerous fantasy novels (14 as of 2005), and is also an award-winning illustrator/painter. Beyond writing, Janny's award winning paintings have been showcased in exhibitions of imaginative artwork, among them a commemorative exhibition for NASA's 25th Anniversary; the Art of the Cosmos at Hayden Planetarium in New York; and two exhibits of fantasy art, at both the Delaware Art Museum, and Canton Art Museum. The teenaged Janny Wurts decided she was sick of fairy tales where the youngest and the blondest always won out, and you could gauge the virtue of a character by the lightness of his or her hair. She already viewed life as a kaleidoscope of overlapping motives, interests and perceptions that shifted every time you adjusted your point of view. But it took years of travel and training in disciplines as diverse as fine arts and archery, history, hard science and swordsmanship to prepare herself to tell the story that became the Wars of Light and Shadow series. At Dragoncon 2002 Crescent Blues talked to Wurts about the history and experiences that shaped her many arts. The conversation ranged from the killing field of Culloden to the oil paintings techniques of the Old Masters, with a double-shot of prescience on the side. Newcomers to her work might do better starting there than with this so-so debut effort, first released in 1982 then revised in 1989 for reissue. There's nothing about Sorcerer's Legacy that's particularly bad . Like Wurts' cover paintings, it's an entirely workmanlike effort, average to a fault, revealing competent craftsmanship if not anything like inspired talent. Sporting the usual catalogue of first-novel flaws, it's a book that offers fantasy fans little they won't find better done elsewhere. Our heroine is Elienne, widow of the Duke of Trathmere, who has just been violently pwned by his enemies. Weeping in one of her late husband's dungeons, awaiting what I think is ordinarily termed a fate worse than death, Elienne is rescued by the sudden appearance of the sorcerer Ielond, from the distant kingdom of Pendaire. Ielond has been searching through time itself for a wife for Pendaire's prince Darion, who, due to his apparent sterility, will soon be forced to forfeit Pendaire's throne to his wicked uncle Jieles and Jieles' wicked wicked advisor, the sorcerer Faisix. Elienne bears her late husband's child, and is sufficiently early in her pregnancy that the infant can be passed off as Darion's. In gratitude for saving her life, Elienne agrees to the match. But it isn't until Ielond reveals that he has sacrificed his own life (in what seems like an inordinately complicated approach to the search) to save his prince that she is won over on a personal level.

An artist, an author, a musician and a sports enthusiast, Janny is a woman of many extraordinary talents. She is the author of eleven novels, a collection of short stories, and the internationally bestselling Empire trilogy written in collaboration with Raymond E. Feist. Her current release in her Wars of Light and Shadow series, is Peril's Gate (Eos) which is the culmination of more than twenty years of carefully evolved ideas. Her award-winning paintings have been showcased in exhibitions of imaginative artwork, among them a commemorative exhibition for NASA's 25th Anniversary; the Art of the Cosmos at Hayden Planetarium in New York; and two exhibits of fantasy art, at both the Delaware Art Museum, and the Canton Art Museum. As a young girl growing up in a small town, Janny was an avid reader, devouring everything that the local library had to offer. She loved science fiction and fantasy, and actually wrote several novels while still in high school. She loved horses and the outdoors, and was fascinated by the world of science. She enjoyed writing, but felt she hadn't really seen enough of the world to be an author. After graduation and a self-financed trip to Europe to see the world, Janny knew that she wanted to create something spectacular, something with breadth and scope. While still in college, she conceived the idea which was later to become the foundation for an epic bestselling fantasy series entitled The Wars of Light and Shadow. But she was also drawn to painting, and first achieved success as a commercial illustrator for the major New York publishing houses. But she never gave up her dream of not only designing book covers, but of writing the books themselves.
