CanLit icon Richard B. Wright talks about his timely new novel
By Rachel Giese, CBC News
October 10, 2007 Author Richard Wright (HarperCollins Canada) Literary fame, the kind that inspires prolonged publicity tours, eager book clubs, prestigious awards and international sales, came slowly to Richard B. Wright. It was his ninth novel, 2001’s Clara Callan — written mostly in the early hours of the morning before the author’s full-time teaching job — that made Wright a name and the release of his future books an event. The novel, which tells the story of the relationship between two sisters in the 1930s, won the Giller Prize and the Governor General’s Award and sold more than 200,000 copies in Canada. Wright was already in his early 60s then, a respected but little-known mid-list author who supported his writing career by working in publishing and later as a teacher at Ridley College, a private school in St. Catharines, Ont. His well-received 2004 follow-up, Adultery , cemented Wright’s reputation as a CanLit bestseller. With money and fame finally in the bank, Wright, who retired from teaching six years ago, can now devote himself full-time to writing.

Wright publicly opposed racial prejudice and was perhaps the most eloquent spokesperson in the United States for his generation of blacks. His most acclaimed works are the novel Native Son (1940) and the autobiographical memoir Black Boy Richard Nathaniel Wright was born outside of Natchez, Mississippi. His father left the family when Wright was still young and his mother, a schoolteacher, was stricken with a paralyzing illness when he was a child. In the past, I have been enormously helped by people who recorded audio of various lectures and conferences and then kindly posted it on the web. I have recorded a few of the sessions from the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) and the American Academy of Religion (AAR) annual meetings November 17-20, 2007 in San Diego. See my previous post about attending the meetings. There are literally thousands of lectures at the meetings but I thought I would give you a sample of the ones I attended. At each time slot, there are about 30-40 choices to choose from. Sometimes I bounce from one to another. Other times I find someone to talk to and skip the sessions. So some of the talks are not complete. But I still thought I would post what my little MP3 player

More Richard Wright news Richard Wright
Having progressed through the same youth academy that produced talents like Kieron Dyer, a 17-year-old Wright made his full first team Ipswich debut on May 6, 1995 against Coventry. The 6ft 2in shot stopper kept a clean sheet that day and won over the Town coaching staff, who didn't hesitate in giving him more and more first team exposure. Wright's England career has progressed nicely in tandem with his reputation over the past few years, starting with the youth team and making appearances at under-21 and 'B' levels. His first senior cap came against Malta in June 2000. His last international appearance was in the 2-0 defeat by Holland in August 2001, as a second-half substitute. He just missed out on Sven Goran Eriksson's World Cup 2002 squad, but given that the three 'keepers selected were all over 30, Wright's time must soon come. Wright was instrumental in Ipswich's extraordinary success in their first season back in the Premiership, with his commanding presence in the box and shot stopping ability soaking up a great deal of pressure from the defence - qualities that convinced Arsene Wenger to make the young England star his target for Seaman's long-term replacement.

On the surface, they seem to be packaged events for literary and cultural historians to dissect, rather than works of literature to be enjoyed. Happily, Richard Wright's A Father's Law , which is being published for the first time on the centennial of his birth, is not just a book for critical theorists, nor is it a book that disappoints.
