INTRODUCTION
Richard Wright was born on September 4, 1908 on a cotton plantation near Natchez, Mississippi in a sharecropping family. His early life was a series of moves from one Southern town to the next, of sporadic schooling and part-time jobs. An impoverished childhood, a broken home, and exposure to the racial oppression of the South became sources of deep anger that permeates Wright's work. He died in Paris, France on November 28, 1960 of a heart attack. The following bibliography is composed of holdings in the Vivian G. Harsh Research Collection of Afro-American History and Literature, Carter G. Woodson Regional Library, the Chicago Public Library. All materials are for reference and in-house usage only

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Among sympathetic readers, there is an assumption that Wright is documentary, that his works can be read as elementary sociology. If these readers are familiar with literary movements, they also assume he can be classed as a naturalistic author displaying the experience of victims. Readers of a negative disposition are inclined to class Wright as an exponent of hate, an unreasonable writer who is not sensitive to the complexities of moral experience. For all of these readers, a useful approach is to focus on the narrative point of view, the third-person narration (or what is technically labeled free, indirect discourse or narrated monologue) that places us within the consciousness of the protagonist. This introduces a complexity of mind, an experience of identification (but not identity) that can illustrate how we and the protagonist are "inside" of statistics or documentary, how we experience life as though we had choice and cannot be victims. I would recommend for study of "The Man Who Was Almost a Man" some consideration of how Wright revised his work to make it less and less "realistic," more and more symbolic. This approach allows for treatment of the issue of universality. Student discussion often centers around guilt and freedom. The most commonly asked questions have to do with a tendency to allegorize the underground journey. While exploring what Wright might intend by some of his choices of settings that the character enters, it is possible to suggest that they are categorical and take him into dominant institutions while exposing the workings of the social values.

Biography of Richard Wright (1908-1961)
Richard Wright Richard Wright Biography of Richard Wright "Words can be weapons against injustice," wrote Richard Wright. These words are evidenced by Wright?s own career as a successful black writer emerging during a period of racial oppression and economic hardship. Born September 4, 1908 on a plantation in Roxie, Mississippi, Wright came into a family embedded in the Southern tradition. His grandfather had been a slave, and his father was an illiterate sharecropper and mill worker. At the age of six, Wright?s father abandoned the family, leaving Wright and his younger brother by two years, Leon, under the sole care of his mother Ella who was a schoolteacher at the time. Moving to Memphis, Tennessee, where Ella took a job as a cook, Wright and his family lived in extreme poverty. His mother felt it necessary to move from community to community; Wright thus attended school sporadically. In the meantime, he also stayed at the homes of various relatives in Arkansas and Mississippi, working various small part-time jobs. With his meager earnings, he managed to buy magazines, dime novels, old schoolbooks ? despite his lack of formal education, Wright read voraciously. In 1935, Wright completed his first novel, Cesspool (published post-posthumously under the title Lawd Today). He also began to publish other works of poetry and short stories. Wright moved to Harlem, New York, in 1937 where he kept himself busy writing articles for various journals and publication as well as his first published book, Uncle Tom?s Children. The novel was finished in 1938 and consisted of a collection of novellas about racial oppression in the South. After being awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, Wright moved to Brooklyn where he was able to finish what is considered one of the most defining works of his career:

Richard Wright's Unpublished Haiku: A World Elsewhere - African American writer
MELUS Fall, 1998 by Floyd Ogburn, Jr. Approximately fourteen months before his death in Paris, France, in November 1960, Richard Wright completed 4,000 haiku. After painstakingly reworking the poems, he produced an 82-page manuscript entitled This Other World: Projections in the Haiku Manner and sent it to William Targ of World Publishing. Adeptly balancing the manuscript's merits and faults in a letter to Wright on July 6, 1960, Targ discourages publication, maintaining that "a fine little book could be produced from a careful selection; but frankly, I don't have the courage to undertake such a publication, publishable though it be. Commercially speaking it simply would not get off the ground. In a limited, deluxe edition, it would perhaps reach the aficionado and the truly dedicated reader-buyer of poetry. But this is not enough for our needs."(1)
