Research Interests
My research interests involve both vector-borne diseases and the zoonoses including the epidemiology of Lyme disease and bluetongue and pre-harvest food safety. Dogs in households in which human cases of Lyme disease had occurred have been monitored for up to 18 months with no evidence of seroconversion. Studies also have been conducted on the transmission of bluetongue virus among both cattle and deer. A model for seroconversion has been developed using weather variables and it appears that daily hours of wet vegetation is the most important variable. Studies have been conducted on a recent outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease is a captive herd of deer. Presently studies are being conducted on the shedding of

  • James Wright, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio. A newspaper editor once expressed astonishment that the Depression-era, dilapidated steel and coal mining town, between the Midwest rust belt and Appalachia, could have produced such a refined poetic voice. Indeed, Wright began writing poetry at age 11, and credits his high school teachers for igniting his poetic instincts. But he did what he could to get out of the small town, joining the military after high school, going to college at Kenyon and then to Austria on a Fulbright Scholarship. When he returned to the U.S., Wright earned graduate degrees in the Pacific Northwest, eventually living and teaching in Minneapolis and New York City. Music on the Show: Grover's Corner

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search James Arlington Wright December 13 March 25 ) was a Pulitzer Prize -winning American poet Wright first emerged on the literary scene in 1956 with The Green Wall , a collection of formalist verse that was awarded the prestigious Yale Younger Poets Prize . But by the early 1960's, Wright, increasingly influenced by the Spanish language surrealists, had dropped fixed meters. His transformation achieved its maximum expression with the publication of the seminal The Branch Will Not Break (1963), which positioned Wright as curious counterpoint to the Beats and New York schools, which predominated on the American coasts. This transformation had not come by accident, as Wright had been working for years with his friend Robert Bly, collaborating on the translation of world poets in the influential magazine The Fifties (later The Sixties ). Such influences fertilized Wright's unique perspective and helped put the Midwest back on the poetic map. Wright had discovered a terse, imagistic, free verse of clarity, and power. During the next ten years Wright would go on to pen some of the most beloved and frequently anthologized masterpieces of the century, such as "A Blessing," "Autumn Begins in Martin's Ferry, Ohio," and "I Am a Sioux Indian Brave, He Said to Me in Minneapolis."

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
The poems of Wright, on the surface, seem simple and accessible. Yet they also seem distinctively "poetic." Students might be asked to discuss how and why the poems are both simple and poetic. This could easily lead to a discussion of images in the poems, and examples from any of the four included here might be used. The example of the moon in "Having Lost My Sons, I Confront the Wreckage of the Moon: Christmas, 1960" might be a good illustration. Have the students identify the verbs with which the moon is introduced and discuss the cumulative effects of the moon imagery generally. Then have them identify the other images of city, frost, silos, graves, etc. How are these latter images used in contrast to the moon? Careful consideration should be given to the title. Finally, how does the phrase "the beautiful white ruins / Of America" at the end of the poem encapsulate and summarize the contrast between beauty and its opposites in the poem? This is a strategy, of course, of close read-ing adapted particularly to Wright's work. Another strategy might be to consider Wright as a social poet addressing American society in the 1960s and 1970s. Ask the students what impression of America during those decades emerges from the poems. How, from the poems in the text, can you justify Wright's identity with those individuals outside middle-class American society? Who are those individuals? What do they have in common? What is the nature of their appeal to Wright?
