The Caine Mutiny Author Herman Wouk Pulitzer Prize Winner
Born into a Jewish family in 1915, Herman Wouk, The Caine Mutiny author took up writing as a fulltime career when he was 31 years old and was serving in the US Navy. Having authored quite a number of best-selling novels, he adopted a career of writing to support his wife Betty Sarah Brown and their three sons.
The parents of The Caine Mutiny author had moved to the USA from Russia. After his school days, he went on to get a B.A. degree from Columbia University. One of his books was dedicated to his first son who died at a tender age. Apart from fiction novels, Wouk, The Caine Mutiny author has also written a book in which he tries to explain and defend the religion of the orthodox Jews. After earning his degree in arts, he started writing scripts for radio shows and later, used his command over the English language to script radio ads promoting war bands that were being sold by the US government. Later on, he joined the US Navy and he has claimed that his knowledge about human-behavior under pressure, about machinery and above all about Americans, was gained during that stint. Wouk scripted Aurora Dawn, his first novel, on board the ship USS Southard, of which he was an executive officer. He used his spare time aboard the ship to write. After hearing a few pages from the opening chapter, an editor from New York approved the story and Wouk

Joel Brodkin
THE JUSTIFICATION OF THE intensive bombing of Serbia in 1999 as part of the need to avoid "another Holocaust" is only a recent event in the Americanization of the Nazi Holocaust: specifically its use as a propaganda theme for the defense of U.S. great power interests. When we refer to the Americanization of the Holocaust we speak not about the atrocity itself, "but only about the rhetorical, cultural and political and religious uses to which the disaster has been put since then," as Phillip Lopate has written. The Americanization of the Holocaust has been extensive. The sense of horror at Nazi crimes has been used as a foundation to develop self-justifying notions of American righteousness because the Nazi Holocaust is about the crimes of others. For any great power, a focus on the crimes of others is welcome, particularly when it is an empire built on a history of slavery and ethnic cleansing. Herman Wouk's best-selling novels (made into films and TV mini-series) such as The Winds of War (1971) and War and Remembrance (1978) brought an awareness of the Holocaust to tens of millions of Americans, making it seem an episode in U.S. history and a part of American historical experience. Wouk's work put a U.S. spin on the Nazi Holocaust, emphasizing the righteousness of U.S. military and international power and the sanctity of American institutions. In addition, in

Book Review: Youngblood Hawke by Herman Wouk
Written by Ashok K. Banker Published September 23, 2005 See also: Book Review: On Beauty by Zadie Smith Book Review: ... by Sam Seder and Stephen Sherrill I first discovered this book in the USIS Library at New Marine Lines, Bombay, as a young boy, an aspiring writer driven mad by the desire to become an author, and by the words and ideas coursing through my engorged teenaged veins. This is a big-hearted book with a hugely ambitious, sprawling style, the kind that isn't even attempted anymore, more's the pity. But most of all, it's a great book about the writing life, perhaps the best ever written. And there have been more than a few penned, as you probably know. Some of which even vie for revealing shocking insights and revelations. For instance, in Stephen King's non-fiction memoir On Writing , the King of bestsellers candidly revealed several shocking insights into his life and career. Among the more controversial revelations are the ones about his drug abuse, dependence on prescription medicines, and excessive use of alcohol.

During my senior year in high school I read The Winds of War and War and Remembrance (hated that miniseries) and I used them for a term paper for my AP English lit class. In college I read The Caine Mutany . I next tried Marjorie Morningstar about 2/3 of the way through and didn’t like the plot when she slept with Noel. I then read all of is other books (from

Victor Wouk Brothers treat AAAS audience to a lively discussion
21 October 2004
One brother is a visionary scientist and engineer, a pioneer in the development of hybrid and electric cars. The other is a popular novelist, once hailed by the New York Times as a "modern Charles Dickens." Victor and Herman Wouk treated an audience at AAAS headquarters in Washington, D.C. last fall to a lively conversation moderated by CEO Alan I. Leshner. At the event, free and open to the public, the Wouks discussed their deep interest in discovery and the different ways they have channeled their exploration of art and science. And though each has had a career of remarkable achievement, the scientist made clear that he was deeply influenced by his brother's art, and the novelist agreed that his brother's guidance on matters of science has been critical to his success. That cross-pollination is nowhere more evident than in Herman Wouk's new novel

E-mail This Article By Herman Wouk The Shabbat has cut most sharply athwart my own life when one of my plays has been in rehearsal or in tryout. The crisis atmosphere of an attempt at Broadway is a legend of our time, and a true one; I have felt under less pressure going into battle at sea. Friday afternoon, during these rehearsals, inevitably seems to come when the project is tottering on the edge of ruin. I have sometimes felt guilty of treason, holding to the Shabbat in such a desperate situation. But then, experience has taught me that a theater enterprise almost always is in such a case. Sometimes it does totter to ruin, and sometimes it totters to great prosperity, but tottering is its normal gait, and cries of anguish are its normal tone of voice. So I have reluctantly taken leave of my colleagues on Friday afternoon, and rejoined them on Saturday night. The play has never collapsed in the meantime. When I return I find it tottering as before, and the anguished cries as normally despairing as ever. My plays have encountered in the end both success and failure, but I cannot honestly ascribe either result to my observing the Shabbat. Leaving the gloomy theater, the littered coffee cups, the jumbled scarred-up scripts, the haggard actors, the knuckle-gnawing producer, the clattering typewriter, and the dense, tobacco smoke has been a startling change, very like a brief return from the wars.
