Introduction:- As the eighteenth century closed, and during but the first couple of decades of the next century, there arose an acuteness of apprehension or feeling as to the beauties of nature. Rousseau was the first to emphasize: the natural, the wild, the primitive, the instinctive. This Rousseauish sensibility was to spread beyond the borders of France to Germany and to England. The adherents of this romantic sensibility, while subscribing to a simplicity of manner, often displayed an exaggerated capacity for emotional response. To walk in the country with the express intention of viewing the scenery was to be was a common expression of the romantics of the age. They would take a camp stool so to sit at their favourite look offs and contemplate the scene. Often they would look away and use a mirror to see the reflection of the scene. These mirrors were known as a Claude Lorraine glass, named after Claud (of) Lorraine (1600-82), the French landscape painter. These hand held mirrors would be tinted or coloured in order to give the viewed scene, these objects of nature, a soft, mellow tinge, like the colouring of that master.

William Wordsworth, the son of an attorney, was born in 1770. After the death of his mother in 1778 and his father in 1783, Wordsworth was sent away to be educated at Hawkshead Grammar School in the Lake District. Wordsworth went to St. John's College Cambridge where he developed radical political views. Influenced by the ideas of William Godwin , Wordsworth was an early supporter of the French Revolution.
Wordsworth went on a walking tour of France in 1790 and returned the following year and had an affair with Annette Vallon, the result of which was an illegitimate daughter, Ann Caroline. After the outbreak of war with France in 1793, Wordsworth returned to England. The poem, Guilt and Sorrow reveals that he still held strong views on social justice. He also wrote, Letter to the Bishop of Llandaff (1793), a pamphlet that gave support to the French Revolution. However, after the Reign of Terror (September 1793-July 1794), Wordsworth became disillusioned with radicalism. This was reflected in his verse drama, The Borderers
In 1796 Wordsworth set up home at Alfoxden in Somerset with his sister, Dorothy Wordsworth. His friend

One of the earliest and perhaps the greatest of English romantic poets, William Wordsworth did much to restore simple diction to English poetry and to establish romanticism as the era's dominant literary movement. His verse celebrates the moral influence exerted by nature on human thought and feeling.
Wordsworth was born on April 7, 1770, in Cockermouth, Cumberland, and educated at Saint John's College, University of Cambridge. He developed a keen love of nature as a youth, and during school vacation periods he frequently visited places noted for their scenic beauty. In the summer of 1790 he took a walking tour through France and Switzerland. After receiving his degree in 1791 he returned to France, where he became an enthusiastic convert to the ideals of the French Revolution. His lover Annette Vallon of Orleans bore him a daughter in December 1792, shortly before his return to England. Disheartened by the outbreak of hostilities between France and Great Britain in 1793, Wordsworth nevertheless remained sympathetic to the French cause.
Although Wordsworth had begun to write poetry while still a schoolboy, none of his poems was published until 1793, when

William Wordsworth (1770-1850)
Wordsworth was one of the most influential of England's Romantic poets. William Wordsworth was born on 7 April 1770 at Cockermouth in Cumbria. His father was a lawyer. Both Wordsworth's parents died before he was 15, and he and his four siblings were left in the care of different relatives. As a young man, Wordsworth developed a love of nature, a theme reflected in many of his poems. While studying at Cambridge University, Wordsworth spent a summer holiday on a walking tour in Switzerland and France. He became an enthusiast for the ideals of the French Revolution. He began to write poetry while he was at school, but none was published until 1793. In 1795, Wordsworth received a legacy from a close relative and he and his sister Dorothy went to live in Dorset. Two years later they moved again, this time to Somerset, to live near the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who was an admirer of Wordsworth's work. They collaborated on 'Lyrical Ballads', published in 1798. This collection of poems, mostly by Wordsworth but with Coleridge contributing 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner', is generally taken to mark the beginning of the Romantic movement in English poetry. The poems were greeted with hostility by most critics.

    William Wordsworth: The World Is Too Much with Us (1807)
    Wordsworth was born and lived most of his life in the rural northwest of England known as the Lake District. Like many other Romantic writers, he saw in Nature an emblem of god or the divine and his poetry often celebrates the beauty and spiritual values of the natural world. He revolutionized English poetry with the publication of Lyrical Ballads What does Wordsworth think is wrong with the modern world? The world is too much with us; late and soon,
    Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
    Little we see in Nature that is ours;
    We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
    This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon,
    The winds that will be howling at all hours,
    And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers,
    For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
    It moves us not.Great God! I'd rather be
    A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn; (1)
    So might I, standing on this pleasant lea, (2) Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn; Have sight of Proteus (3) rising from the sea;
