Review Of Monica Wood’s Ernie’s Ark
Ernie’s Ark
by Monica Wood is not merely a great book, but great literature. I state this to differentiate this fact from the typical lower case ‘great’ that adorns the book covers of every piece of schlock the publishing world wastes pulp on. The great I state is with a capital G. That this book ever got published, by Ballantine Books , must be a testament to randomness, for I seriously doubt the author’s agent, editor, and publisher knew what they had, and, if one can read between the lines on the author’s website, and an interview printed in the book, after the work, neither, perhaps, did the author. More on that later. It’s time to express appreciation for this great work. I picked it up for under $4 at a typical book discounter after skimming through some of the stories to read their ends. I have learnt through the years that it is about a 90% surety that a well-written story ending augurs a good story. These ended well, so I got it. I’d never heard of Ms. Wood before, although she’d written two novels prior to this collection of short stories, and one after. However, the truth is that Ernie’s Ark is one of those short story collections that is a de facto novel, set in a specific time and place, with intertwined characters, despite the author’s denial of such in a printed interview in the book. In that way it might draw reasonable comparisons to James Joyce’s

The Need for Careful Measurement and Fitting of Special Seating to Meet each Child's Needs
If special seating is to help a child sit well, gain better head and body control, or move and do things more easily, it is essential that the design be appropriate for the child's needs, and that it fit the child correctly. In many parts of the world, one sees disabled children sitting in specially-made seats or wheelchairs that simply do not fit them. Often the seat is far too big. Before building a seat for a child, it is important to take correct measurements . Equally important is to carefully evaluate the child's individual needs, interests, limitations, abilities and possibilities, as well as her likes, dislikes, and fears The most important test of a special seat is: Does the child like it?

    Clark '50s ranch makeover
    Susan Felt
    The Arizona Republic
Oct. 22, 2005 12:00 AM Cliff and Monica Clark had a couple of objectives when they tackled the remodel of a 1950s ranch house with views of Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak.
They wanted to get rid of the family room's "lodgy feel" and create an open, cleaner look that felt more South Pacific. And they needed to complete the makeover before the birth of their first child, daughter Sage. (She was born June 5.)
They succeeded, but with no time to spare.
An interior-design major from the University of Texas, Monica, 31, spent several years in the hotel industry designing spaces, until the couple moved to Phoenix. In 2003, she opened Indigo Home, a smart home-furnishings store near the popular La Grande Orange Grocery at 40th Street and Campbell Avenue. The store specializes in the global-chic look: simple lines, natural textures and colors, and Asian, Indonesian and European design influences.
It's a look Monica and her husband, 31, a Web-site manager, wanted for their home.

Solo exhibition, A Different Kind of Order , Dec 07 - Jan 08 at Marcia Wood Gallery Monica Cook was born in Georgia and graduated Summa Cum Laude from from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1996. She now lives and works in New York, where she recently concluded a residency at the School of Visual Arts. Since 1992, Cook has exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the US and Canada, as well as in the Netherlands, Israel, France and Switzerland. Publications include Art in America, Le Figaro, Elle Magazine, and New American Paintings. Monica Cook paints hyper-realistic Symbolist portraits of female figures. These figures are brilliantly painted, with breathtaking skill; Cook excels in rendering the subtleties of the flesh and details of light, tone and surface. Painted with an eerie intensity, Cook's figures compel the viewer to study them, often surreptitiously, as there is a strong sense of invading an extremely private moment. We look, albeit sideways, with fascination at the beauty, humanity and complexity of these portraits. The artist states: "I am often carried away with the details, using the paint to describe a near-cruel, sometimes disturbing, objectivity of the figure, heightening various textures on the body, the translucency of the skin, how the veins surface and recede, the subtle sheen of the lips and slickness of the eyes. I love to paint flesh, fascinated by how history is trapped in the skin: the stories told in lines etched into faces, bruises and scars from their past. I find myself heightening the details on and in the flesh, which enhances the mortal presence of the sitter and creates a tension between the psychological complexity of the person and their raw humanness."
