Tom Wolfe's Washington Post
By James Rosen Sunday, July 2, 2006; Page B05 "At a Washington party," Thomas Wolfe once observed, "it is not enough that the guests feel drunk; they must feel drunk and important." Classic Wolfe! Piercingly funny and perceptive . . . instantly quotable . . . exposing the vanities of the elite. So why is it so . . . unfamiliar? Because you won't find the line in the familiar Wolfe canon "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test," "The Right Stuff," "Bonfire of the Vanities." No, it was discovered in a vast unexplored trove: the daily journalism Wolfe produced as a police and features reporter for a full decade before he morphed, in the mid-1960s, into . . . Tom Wolfe

We’ll consider the increasing presence and manifold contributions of Latin-American populations and cultures within the United States. Our first step will be to understand the surprising diversity within this demographic: the Mexican, Caribbean, Indian, the various South American, and the Hispanic origins of this population. We’ll examine several social, economic, and political influences, as well as a new cultural dynamic that has woven strong new colors into the fabric of American life, including music, sports, literature and film, cuisine, and education. We can look forward to a lively, refreshing analysis of new flavors in the great American melting pot. Serving also in this seminar are Art Goldsmith from economics; Ellen Mayock, associate dean of the College; and Deborah Miranda from English. Tom Wolfe will introduce Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez and offer some concluding remarks.

Thomas Wolfe
Thomas Wolfe was born in Asheville in 1900. His mother was a woman of the mountain, his father a stonecutter from Pennsylvania. In public schools and later in a private academy, he observed carefully the life around him. He stored away in hismind hte ten thousands of impressions later to be used in the most impressive books ever written by a North Carolinian. The town of Asheville was just then expanding into a bustling resort. But young, tall Tom Wolfe was not satisfied. He was always looking out beyond the hills which he said "hemmed" him in. At fifteen he entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and, before his graduation, became one of the most important figures on the campus. Besides majoring in English, he worked for the college publications and studied playwriting under "Proff" Koch. Determined on a career as a professional dramatist, he went to Harvard for a master's degree and, when his plays were not accepted immediately by Broadway producers, began teaching English at New York University. On a trip abroad he suddenly started writing out the vivid recollections of his boyhood in Asheville, which he called Atlamont. Teh result was Look Homeward, Angel

Rest Thomas Wolfe - Thomas Wolfe's Grave
Thomas Wolfe's Grave Thomas Wolfe was stricken with an influenza while traveling in the Pacific Northwest. Wolfe told his doctors he believed that he became sick while on a July 4th cruise to Vancouver on the Canadian Pacific steamship, Princess Kathleen . On the ship, he shared a drink of whisky with a shivering man, whom he would later call "a poor shivering wretch." The next day he became very sick and decided to make his way back to Seattle. The illness eventually developed into pneumonia and he was initially treated by Dr. E. C. Ruge, the physician of the Stevens, a Seattle literary couple Wolfe had recently met. Wolfe was terrified of hospitals, so instead of going to one when he should have, he went to recover at Dr. Ruge's sanitarium, Firlawns. Wolfe was not healing as the doctor expected he should. Ruge was a former TB specialist and realized that there was something else wrong. Dr. Charles E. Watts was brought in for consultation. Wolfe was taken to Providence Hospital where he was given x-rays and tests. A large spot was revealed on Wolfe's right lung. The two doctors both had different diagnoses. Ruge thought the spot was an old tubercular condition, but Watts did not think it showed tuberculosis. Ruge, certain that it was TB, told Wolfe what he thought. Wolfe, angry and afraid, removed Dr. Ruge from his case and put Dr. Watts in charge.

A House Restored, An Author Revisited; Thomas Wolfe Shrine Returns
By RALPH BLUMENTHAL (NYT) 1743 words
ASHEVILLE, N.C. Flames gorged on Julia Wolfe's prim dining room in the family boarding house that her son Thomas lampooned as the forlorn Dixieland in ''Look Homeward, Angel.'' They devoured the massive Eastlake mantelpiece and Mission chairs and tables, melted the brass clocks and silver, and destroyed 200 of the house's 800 artifacts, while damaging many others throughout the 29 rooms.
Much else, too, was destroyed when the white, gabled 1883 Queen Anne house called Old Kentucky Home was torched by an unknown arsonist in the early hours of July 24, 1998. But firefighters salvaged most of the structure, and the interior is now being restored at a cost of $2.4 million for an anticipated November reopening.
The restoration comes at a time when Wolfe's seesawing literary reputation established in 1929 with the searing fictionalized reminiscences of ''Look Homeward, Angel'' may once again be on the upswing. If so, part of the credit goes to devotees and their Thomas Wolfe Society, which holds its annual meeting tomorrow and Saturday in Burlington, Vt., where Wolfe took a motor trip in 1933.

American Author Biography: Thomas Wolfe
Wolfe's one of the 20th Century's greatest America authors. He gave the literary community some of the greatest writings ever. Information on his life and work.
Thomas Wolfe was born in 1900 in Asheville, North Carolina. Tom and brother Ben lived with their mother in a boarding house that she ran while their sister and father lived in an old family home. There was trouble in Tom’s family from a very early age and due to the tension and differences, his parents split the family. Tom’s mother and father’s separation early in his life and gave him a great loneliness that turned him to books. Thomas Wolfe wrapped himself into the books he would read and they came alive to him and he began to drift away into another world that was not torn apart. Tom used the pains and torments from his childhood and young adulthood to passionately write his greatest novels. Even though he died at a very young age, Thomas Wolfe left the literary community an inheritance. Tom, an avid reader at a very young age, also became a very intelligent student. Tom enrolled in the University of North Carolina at the age of fifteen. Tom’s passion for writing flourished during his college days. While an undergraduate, he was a member of the Carolina Playmakers. The Carolina Playmakers consisted of a group of students that wrote and performed their own plays. Tom discovered a desire to become a playwright during these years at the University of North Carolina.
