by Gene Wolfe That, I believe, was what drew me to him so strongly when I first encountered The Lord of the Rings . As a child I had been taught a code of conduct: I was to be courteous and considerate, and most courteous and most considerate of those less strong than I of girls and women, and of old people especially. Less educated men might hold inferior positions, but that did not mean that they themselves were inferior; they might be (and often would be) wiser, braver, and more honest than I was. They were entitled to respect, and were to be thanked when they befriended me, even in minor matters. Legitimate authority was to be obeyed without shirking and without question. Mere strength (the corrupt coercion Washington calls power and Chicago clout ) was to be defied. It might be better to be a slave than to die, but it was better to die than to be a slave who acquiesced in his own slavery. Above all, I was to be honest with everyone. Debts were to be paid, and my word was to be as good as I could make it. With that preparation I entered the Mills of Mordor, where courtesy is weakness, honesty is foolishness, and cruelty is entertainment.

Long before its inclusion on Millennium's SF Masterworks list, Gene Wolfe's densely allusive four volume The Book of the New Sun The Shadow of the Torturer The Claw of the Conciliator The Sword of the Lictor (1981) and The Citadel of the Autarch (1983)) was acclaimed as one of science fiction's 'masterpieces'. Universally praised, each volume won at least one of sf's most coveted awards: The Shadow of the Torturer took the Howard Memorial Award and the World Fantasy Award in 1981, and the British Science Fiction Award in 1982; The Claw of the Conciliator brought Wolfe his second Nebula Award in 1981, whilst Locus honoured the novel with its Best Fantasy Novel Award in 1982; The Sword of the Lictor received the British Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1983; and

Otherwise, apart from missing a treat, you will find it takes a while to work out what's going on in part two of the series LAKE OF THE LONG SUN and nothing should be allowed to do that.
The Book of the Long Sun is simply the best multi-volume series doing the rounds at present, if the first two in the series are anything to judge by. Wolfe has effortlessly created a totally believable society, while telling us the minimum we need to know, and treated us to that fundamental of science fiction which is all to often missing from novels by the modern exponents - sense of wonder. There are too few novelists currently working in the genre who seem capable of it, perhaps they feel their audience is too jaundiced or have seen it all before at the movies. Perhaps they have merely lost their own sense of wonder at what can be achieved in SF.
Take a leisurely trip through Gene Wolfe's world of the Long Sun - a generation ship whose destination we do not know and whose origins are only vaguely hinted at. We know it comes from the Urth of the New Sun but why and how are yet to come. Somehow, Patera Silk, who in the first novel began the struggle to save his manteion (part monastery, part church) from the developers. Towards the end of that novel there is a suggestion that Silk may end up as something more than a humble priest, that he is destined for power. In volume two he moves inexorably towards the position of Calde which, though obviously a high office, was never fully explained in the first volume.

REFERENCES COLUMNS Fantasy Science Fiction Horror For fans of Gene Wolfe, 'The Knight' is unlikely to disappoint. First in the series 'The Wizard-Knight', this fantasy tale draws its inspiration from myth and legend. It is packed with evocative descriptions, but is definitely not a book for those who like a neat ending. Gene Wolfe has gained something of a reputation for oblique writing and his latest novel is no exception. He hints at large and potentially complex themes, but ultimately provides far more questions than answers. In many ways 'The Knight' is a play on our ideas of time and place. Wolfe allows time to move at different rates in each world. A day in Aelfrice can equate to as much as a few years in Sir Able's world of Mythgarthr. Presumably time is similarly warped in the other worlds. Early in the novel Sir Able befriends an old man, Bold Berthold, who is convinced that the boy is his long-lost younger brother who disappeared many years previously. He would have expected the brother to be a man, so is nonplussed when Able acquires his masculine form. This, however, suggests a parallel with the American boy Able believes himself to be. Will he one day return to America in a similarly mysterious manner and surprise his brother Ben with his reappearance? Perhaps on the other hand, he will return to find that time has stood still in America. Once again, these are not new ideas. Perhaps most famously, C.S. Lewis made use of a similar play on the idea of time in his 'Narnia' chronicles.

Five Steps Towards Briah:
Gene Wolfe's The Book of the Long Sun
by Nick Gevers
The title is a multiplex pun, so typical of Gene Wolfe. The Book of the Long Sun can only closely follow, or mirror, The Book of the New Sun . And just as Severian, the narrator of the first Book, is the New Son of God, a man becoming Christlike if not Christ himself returned, so Patera Silk, Wolfe's new protagonist, is the Long Son, the product of a virgin birth, long (tall) in physical and moral stature. And the renovation of the Sun is again implied; and the story, in four volumes, is very long, and is not over yet. Thus Wolfe in six words summarizes his second tetralogy; and the critic can add that The Book of the Long Sun is, very likely, the most significant work of SF to be published in the 1990s-the most precise, the most sustained, and the most profound. It is a tale of physical, religious, and philosophical exodus; and, as such, it interrogates, and dismisses, the material world. The result is devious, eccentric, and charismatic, an old story rendered utterly, weirdly new. The Book of the New Sun is grand but bleakly closed;

Some good responses on my post on Gene Wolfe below. Just to be clear, I find plenty to mull over in Wolfe's books, particularly with regard to his political and religious attitudes. What makes him so vexing is that I find his work substantively disappointing and yet cannot dismiss him. But I maintain that there's an attitude brought to the work that makes the books less than they could be, and indeed, what I think Wolfe wants them to be. Some quotes: LM : All this "showing" in "V.R.T." is made intriguingly ambiguous by the confusion about who "Marsch" really is. Wolfe : In the end, of course, it's important that the reader not be confused about this, although part of the fun is supposed to be figuring out what's happened. I leave a number of clues as to who the narrator actually is. For example, both V.R.T. and the narrator are shown to be very poor shots, whereas Marsch is a very good shot, and there's other hints like that. If you hire a shape changer as a guide, there's a definite possibility that he's going to change into your shape at some point. Which is what happens. Larry McCaffery interview JJ: The Soldier of Arete is even more than Soldier of the Mist a bit hard to follow in terms of his plot. And I remember, in fact I remember when it came out Orson Scott Card really complained that (it was in Analog or Astounding; one of those magazines) he had a review that said "Nobody reads Gene Wolfe with more care and affection than I do but I can't figure out what this book is about." What is wrong with this author? Does that kind of complaint bother you or do you feel as if you wish you could leave more clues or do you feel: Hey, read the book and look at it again and you will find the answers.

      Soldier of Sidon by Gene Wolfe
      Reviewed by Tony Keen
      02 November 2007 The popular view of fantasy has, since Tolkien, become dominated by a pseudomediaeval Norse/Teutonic background, as is represented, in various forms, by the works of Lynch, Valente, and Kushner on the World Fantasy Award shortlist. But many other mythologies exist. Those of Greece and Rome are usually explored solely through retellings of the Trojan War or other great mythological narratives (often excising the gods from the tales). But there is much potential in a Graeco-Roman background. As anyone who has read Herodotus will know, to many Greeks, encounters with gods or spirits were simply part of life, as everyday as the weather or other natural phenomena. In 1986, Gene Wolfe, already highly respected for The Book of the New Sun , took time off from the history of Severian to write Soldier of the Mist , the story of Latro, a Latin mercenary in the army of the Persian King Xerxes in 479 BC, and his adventures through Greece in the aftermath of the defeat of the Persian invasion. Latro has suffered a grievous head wound in the climactic battle of Plataea, as a result of divine displeasure. He now cannot recall events of more than a day previously, but on the other hand, he can see the gods and demigods that populate the Greek landscape. John Clute observes in The Encylopedia of Science Fiction that this work picks up and reflects themes in The Book of the New Sun Now, seventeen years after the second volume

The Ascians, from Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun , are basically an über-communistic society where individual concerns are totally subservient to the will of the Group (the leaders of Ascia are called "The Group of Seventeen"); over the centuries, a curious form of thought control has been exerted over the Ascian people, with citizens only allowed to use sentences from a manifesto in their utterances any other speech is forbidden. The manifesto is a book of patriotic and philosophical sayings and aphorisms that forms the basis for how Ascia is run.
