Gene Wolfe and Neil Gaiman invite you to tour the Shambles, that historic old Chicago neighborhood which miraculously survived the Great Fire of 1871. ("Ya can't burn Hell," as one local politician laughingly remarked.) Uniquely Chicago, the Shambles offers an array of delights for the intrepid sightseer: Cereal House with its Terribly Strange Bed (be sure to fill out the "next of kin" form if you stay the night: a quaint touch adding to the fun of an overnight visit); the House of Clocks boasts a collection of 20,000 time pieces (arrive on the hour, for an unforgettable moment); the historic H.H. Holmes' House with the bars on his children's windows still intact; Saunders Park, a soothing respite from the city streets (if one is careful), with its gardens, statuary, ornamental lake and the infamous Petting Zoo (a favorite with children, but it's best not to bring your own); plus many more intriguing sights In the finest tradition of Charles Addams and Edward Gorey, our trustworthy guides Gene Wolfe and Neil Gaiman reveal the secrets of the Shambles, finding the best places to eat, (and where not to accept food under any circumstances), where to begin your walking tour, and when to run.

MY RATING : BRIEF SYNOPSIS : Latro had little long-term memory. In fact, each night he forgot everything that happened the day before. As a result, he had to try to write down everything he experienced each day and read it back the next morning.... Vote!

Executive summary: The Book of the New Sun Military service: US Army (Korea); Texas National Guard Gene Wolfe is best known for his Book of the New Sun series and its follow up sagas, all featuring the one-time professional torturer Severian. Also of note is his earlier novel Fifth Head of Cerebus . Although Wolfe is not as well known to readers as he once was, he has been the recipient of tremendous critical acclaim, including three World Fantasy Awards, two Nebulas, and eight Hugo Award nominations. Fellow sci-fi author Harlan Ellison has called him, "no less than one of the finest, most original writers in the world today", and the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction names him "quite possibly the most important" writer in the field of science fiction. Born in 1931, on the southwest tip of Long Island, New York, Gene Rodman Wolfe moved frequently as a child, but spent the bulk of his growing-up years in Texas. He identifies Houston as his hometown and cites the incredible heat, omnipresent in the days before air conditioning, as one of the many influences that steered him toward science fiction writing. Another influence was the sci-fi pulps he devoured in the local drug store, along with copious mysteries. Given that he attended Edgar Allan Poe Elementary School, it is also interesting to note that he was Guest of Honor at the 2002 World Horror Convention.

Gene Wolfe
Gene Wolfe is my favourite author. There are many that compete for this spot, among them (in no particular order) Harlan Ellison, Philip K. Dick, Roger Zelazny, Ursula K. LeGuin, and Frank Herbert, just to name a few; but the writing and the story-telling of none of them captures my fascination and imagination in the way that Gene Wolfe does. ``Gene Wolfe is engaged in the holy chore of writing every author under the table. He is no less than one of the finest, most original writers in the world today. His work is singular, hypnotizing, startlingly above comparison. The Shadow of the Torturer breaks new ground in American literature and, as the first novel of a tetralogy, casts a fierce light on what will certainly be a lodestone landmark, his most stunning work to date. It is often said, but never more surely than this time: This book is not to be missed at the peril of one's intellectual enrichment.'' Harlan Ellison This page is rather sparse at the moment. I plan to add more detail, opinions, titles of my favourite stories, etc. as I find the time.
The ``Sun'' Books
The ``New Sun'', ``Long Sun'', and ``Short Sun'' are all linked in some way or other. Although set in a future so distant that our own time has receded out of all memory, this future ``Urth'' is also bent with age and decay, and infused with language and symbolism that predate most of our own memories, but evoke a sense of familarity. Wolfe weaves his stories with such care and love that the depth, density, and unforgettable imagery transports and forever leaves its mark upon us.

Gene Wolfe is one of the most respected writers in the field, and one of the few authors in the genre whose stories have been accepted in mainstream publications such as The New Yorker. Nominated 19 times for a Nebula Award, he has received the World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement. He is known for strikingly audacious novels such as The Fifth Head of Cerberus, but most readers will probably have learned to appreciate his writing in The Book of the New Sun series, and the associated Long Sun series. The Novels of Gene Wolfe
Last updated September 13, 1998 Gene Wolfe is a somewhat erratic genius. For me, sometimes he writes stories of deep beauty and intelligence, other times he writes stories that escape me completely. Wolfe has writen many books, more than I have read, along with many short stories. He says that he writes for at least one hour every day, no matter what. Wolfe stands in a very strange place, some of his work seems to fit neither in the relm of fantasy, nor does it fit comfortably in the world of science fiction. His language is what sets him apart from his contemporaries. He uses many rare and unusual words. He claims that he does not invent words, but they may as well have been invented considering how rarely used the words are. Some people may find his language offputting, I view it as part of the enchantment he casts upon his readers. The Shadow of the Torturer Series
There are four books in this series: The Shadow of the Torturer The Claw of Conciliator The Sword the Lictor , and The Citidel of the Autarch By turns beautiful, bizzare, unsettling, deep, wise, and profoundly moving. There are four books in the original series (one was added later). The series was concieved and writen almost to completion before the first book was published (this is very rare in the field, and comendable).

With these credentials one might expect Wolfe to be among the leaders of the Hard-SF league but almost the exact opposite is true. His work boasts some of the most poetic, but at the same time cryptic, use of the English language, both modern and archaic, and the closest literary models I can think of with which to compare him would be James Joyce and Thomas Pynchon, with a little bit of Proust thrown in for good measure. Some Moments with the Magus:
An Interview with Gene Wolfe
by Nick Gevers Michael Andre-Driussi , and James Jordan
INTRODUCTION, BY NICK GEVERS
I have interviewed Gene Wolfe before, early in 2002, for SF Site . Here is the summary of his literary career I offered then, together with an estimation of the uncertainties inherent in interviewing so consummately subtle a literary artist: sui generis , an ineffable magus of prose. Kim Stanley Robinson and Tim Powers may vie with him for supremacy as novelists within the genres of the fantastic; Lucius Shepard and Michael Swanwick may have his measure in the short fiction field; but across the full spectrum of textual length, Wolfe has no authentic qualitative equal his multi-volume novels and his intricately crafted short stories are all of a commanding piece. "This said, there are perhaps three distinct threads running through the Wolfe oeuvre, embodied respectively in the vast neo-classical novels, the contemporary fantasies, and the puzzles in miniature. The first bracket: Wolfe has a fascination with paganism and the rise of Christianity that eclipsed it, and has worked this into a series of related epics: The Book of the New Sun , made up of The Shadow of the Torturer The Claw of the Conciliator The Sword of the Lictor

Wyrm Publishing is offering a signed, limited edition of 500 of Memorare , a new Wolfe novella Humans go into space for many reasons. For some it’s adventure and excitement. Others, it’s the solitude. And some choose it for their final resting place. March Wildspring is a freelance cameraman, working on a documentary on the memorials drifting in the emptiness of space. Some are lovely, peaceful monuments to the deceased. Others are built not to honor the dead but trap the living.
Memorial 19 is like nothing March has ever seen before. And when he and his crew enter it, they will not be allowed to leave unchanged.... The ordering page says its due in "winter", supposedly of 2007. Gene Wolfe invites readers to vacation on his science-fiction islands
By Kathie Huddleston nother prolific science-fiction author in Gene Wolfe's shoes might decide it's time to rest on his laurels after a writing career that has spanned decades. But then he wouldn't be Gene Wolfe. The esteemed writer is busy at work on a new novel called The Wizard Knight , which is already destined to end up as a bigger story than one novel can hold. While Wolfe might take issue with those who call his work "intricate," "complex" or "dense," science fiction notables are impressed. In The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction , John Clute states that Gene Wolfe's importance has been twofold. "The inherent stature of his work is deeply impressive, and he wears the fictional worlds of SF like a coat of many colours." This man of many stories began writing science fiction in the 1950s and sold his first story, "The Dead Man," to

Fiction: Unrequited Love by Gene Wolfe
“Two loves I have, of comfort and despair.” —Shakespeare You have no reason to listen to me, but may sigh and turn the page and be none the worse for it. Yet I have every reason to speak out. If this public confession of my innocent guilt lifts my spirits to the slightest degree, it will be well worth the loss of your esteem. You see, I am one who had done wrong while seeking to do good. There are millions like me in that, and most acknowledge no smallest trace of guilt. “My intentions were good!” Soon, one hopes, a great, blood-colored hand whose fingers are tipped with claws will close about them and drag them down to Hell. So it may drag me; and mine were good, though I scorn to offer that in my defense. It is results that matter in this world and in every other. My good intentions brought innocent hearts pain that will not end. Each night, once, twice, sometimes three times in a night, I rise and dress and go out to see if they are there. They are not, but would be if they could—poor simple little beings whose torment I began. Do you understand?

LOOK AT Gene: a genial smile (the one they named for him), pixie-twinkle in his eyes, a reassuring mustache. Listen to that chuckle. Do not be lulled. He holds all the cards: he has five aces in his hand, and several more up his sleeve. I once read him an account of a baffling murder, committed ninety years ago. "Oh," he said, "well, that's obvious," and proceeded off-handedly to offer a simple and likely explanation for both the murder and the clues the police were at a loss to explain. He has an engineer's mind that takes things apart to see how they work and then puts them back together.
