The article and the broadcasts dealt mainly with Wodehouse's experiences in internment, but they did include a very few comments on the war. The following are fair samples: Daily Mirror Daily Mirror In addition the B.B.C. banned Wodehouse's lyrics from the air and was still doing so a couple of years later. As late as December 1944 there were demands in Parliament that Wodehouse should be put on trial as a traitor. lack of development. ...How much of a formula the writing of his later books had become one can see from the fact that he continued to write stories of English life although throughout the sixteen years before his internment he was living at Hollywood and Le Touquet. In Something Fresh had gone over to the enemy, which from his own point of view was the right thing to do. But what interested me was to find that he regarded Wodehouse as an anti-British writer who had done useful work by showing up the British aristocracy in their true colours. This is a mistake that it would be very difficult for an English person to make, and is a good instance of the way in which books, especially humorous books, lose their finer nuances when they reach a foreign audience. For it is clear enough that Wodehouse is not If my analysis of Wodehouse's mentality is accepted, the idea that in 1941 he consciously aided the Nazi propaganda machine becomes untenable and even ridiculous. On this day in 1975 P. G. "Plum" Wodehouse died, aged ninety-three. Given the hundred books and the three-dozen musicals, it seems reasonable to believe the account of Wodehouse's final moments which has him collapsing while trying to pick up the pen and papers his wife had thrown across his hospital room. On this day in 1946 George Orwell published "In Defence of P. G. Wodehouse," in which he tries to rescue the author from his stickiest and most famous spot of trouble. "Plum" Wodehouse, Plumheads

P.G. Wodehouse's Nuggets
I took Richard Usborne's Wodehouse quotes out of Gayton Library today.
My favourite P.G. Wodehouse stories are the Psmith series, involving the wonderfully logical Psmith and his more mediocre friend Mike.
Here are some of my favorite P.G. Wodehouse quotes:
(Ukridge)
(The Man With Two Left Feet)
He has probably now been eaten by bears, like the children who made mock of the prophet Elisha: but if he still survives he will not be able to make a similar charge against Summer Lightning. With my superior intelligence, I have outgeneralled this man by putting in all the old Wodehouse characters under the same names. Pretty silly it will make him feel, I rather fancy.

P. G. Wodehouse
Novelist and cartoonist "Plum" Wodehouse was born in Surrey, England in 1881. He was educated at Dulwich College, where he met gentry-folk who would serve as the main characters of many of his future books. For over 70 years Wodehouse was to entertain readers with his comic novels and stories set in an England that is forever Edwardian and featuring idiotic youths, feckless debutantes, redoubtable aunts, and stuffy businessmen. He was most famous for his many novels about Bertie Wooster and his unflappable valet Jeeves, later made famous in the productions featuring actors Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry . The "Jeeves" novels include The Inimitable Jeeves Bertie Wooster Sees It Through (1955), and Much Obliged, Jeeves (1971). In addition to his works of fiction, Wodehouse was a lyricist who collaborated with Jerome Kern, and contributed to several musicals, including Anything Goes After college Wodehouse worked for two years for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, but he left to earn his living as a journalist and storywriter, his life long love. At the age of 28, in 1909, he made his second trip to the U.S.A. where he continued to write short stories and also critical reports for papers as theatrical critic. He made a serial for the Saturday Evening Post, and for the next twenty-five years almost all his books made their first appearance in this magazine.

(1955, aged 74) Writing period Genres comedy romantic comedy Debut works The Pothunters Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse KBE 15 October 14 February IPA /ˈwʊdhaʊs/ ) was a comic writer who enjoyed enormous popular success during a career of more than seventy years and continues to be widely read over 30 years after his death. Despite the political and social upheavals that occurred during his life, much of which was spent in France and the United States , Wodehouse's main canvas remained that of prewar English upper-class society, reflecting his birth, education, and youthful writing career. An acknowledged master of English prose , Wodehouse has been admired both by contemporaries such as Hilaire Belloc Evelyn Waugh and Rudyard Kipling and by modern writers such as Douglas Adams Salman Rushdie and Terry Pratchett Sean O'Casey famously called him "English literature's performing flea", a description that Wodehouse used as the title of a collection of his letters to a friend, Bill Townend.

P. G. Wodehouse Appreciation Page
Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) was an English humorist who wrote novels, short stories, plays, lyrics, and essays, all with the same light touch of gentle satire. He is best known as the creator of the irredeemably dim and unflaggingly affable Bertie Wooster and his invincible valet Jeeves, but Wodehouse also produced multi-volume story cycles on Blandings Castle, Mr. Mulliner's extended family, Mike and Psmith, the Oldest Member, Uncle Fred, and the Drones Club. (All this is in addition to his many stand-alone novels, short stories, and plays.) Throughout his stories, Wodehouse presents a view of the world which differs from his fans would say, improves upon the focus most people have. For a variety of reasons, pigs, newts, and statues of the Infant Samuel at Prayer play significant roles in the Wodehousian view, while such things as death, taxes, and work are crowded towards the O. P. wings. The intent of this site is to provide a set of links to those sites on the World Wide Web that, in one way or another, stand with Wodehouse as he surveys the world.
