JOHN WINTHROP AND THE PURITAN DREAM OF A SHINING 'CITY UPON A HILL'. THIS VISION OF A JUST AND PIOUS 'NATION UNDER GOD' IS STILL A MAJOR DRIVING SPIRIT IN AMERICA TODAY.
Whether we like it or not, the fact is that God is an important part of American life. This has been the case since the nation's early beginnings. As we proceed in this study it will become clear that there is a good historical reason for this. The Anglo-American Puritans, along with their separatist friends, the Pilgrims, have had a profound influence on America in times past. The thesis of this series of articles is that in a spiritual sense the Puritans, (and the Pilgrims as well), are still around. In fact today's Puritans continue to be a major driving force in American society. Nowadays they go by another name. We call them the

THE WINTHROP FLEET
by Loring L. Bigelow It is presumed that John Bigelow arrived in America with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630. This cannot be proven as no complete roster of passengers exists; however, it seems likely that he was a passenger on one of the eleven ships from England that made up the Fleet. John would have been but a lad of 13 or 14 at the time and probably, although unproven, traveled along with his older sister Elizabeth. Elizabeth later became the second wife of Deacon Richard Butler of Hartford, CT. (See The Bigelow Family Genealogy, Vol. 1, p. 11). But what about this "fleet?" It consisted of 11 ships, but strangely enough, all did not sail at the same time from the same place and hence all did not travel together. At the New England landings, not all ships arrived at the same time nor at the same harbors - more about that later. The "flagship" of the Winthrop Fleet was the Arbella and she carried the most important people, including Winthrop, Squire of Groton Manor. He had thrown in his lot with the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1629. Winthrop was a lawyer, unsatisfied with his life and future opportunities in England. After joining the group, he was elected leader for this expedition, and thus the fleet acquired its name. The Winthrop Woman , a book by Seton is well researched and deals with factual events in the life of this Winthrop family.

John Winthrop Wadleigh
Lieutenant Colonel, United States Marine Corps Courtesy of Mary Remey Wadleigh: 1 July 2006 I am Mary Remey Wadleigh, daughter of George Remey Wadleigh, granddaughter of John Winthrop Wadleigh, great granddaughter of George Collier Remey and great niece of John Terry Remey. I can tell you something about all of these men. John Winthrop Wadleigh also died very young. He was an officer in the U. S. Marines and contracted yellow fever, I believe, while at sea in the spring of 1923. He left his widow, Mary Remey Wadleigh, for whom I was named, and my father and uncle, then aged 2 and 7, respectively. (John W. Wadleigh's father was a distinguished Navy admiral, George Henry Wadleigh, best known for initiating the plan to establish a naval base at Subic Bay, in the Phillippines, among many other exploits.) John Terry Remey was the youngest son of Admiral Remey. Although he was still alive when I was born, I believe, I do not remember ever meeting him and I do not know much about him except that he graduated from Harvard College. I hope this is somewhat useful. Please contact me if you need more information. I can probably find out more, if you need it.
