for Jeffrey and Sloth In the spring of 2007, Orca Books published Kari-Lynn Winters' Jeffrey and Sloth, a picture book about the daunting task of overcoming writer's block. Her next book, Runaway Alphabet, will be published by Simply Read Books. And another story that she developed in our - with the working title Chicken on Skis - has been accepted for publication by Raincoast Books. Kari says she didn't always consider herself a writer - that, in fact, she was a reluctant writer in elementary school who found composition a struggle. It was her love of storytelling and children's literature that led Kari to eventually to try her own hand at writing. She affirms that her love of children's literature continues to grow as she "practices writing as a reader and reading as a writer." In her "spare time" Kari is also a PhD candidate, graduate teaching assistant, children’s theatre performer and mother of two. You can read more by and about Kari on

At least in my opinion, "can't see the forest FROM the trees" makes some sense altho then again, the more I think about it, the less sense that version makes :) Thank God I am not an English teacher anymore!! 2:21 AM

Indigenous Peoples and Human Rights
By Novi Siti Julaeha*
"When people are deprived of their rights, then it is natural to resist. And when injustice is purported to become law, then resistance is justified and it becomes their duty"(1)
Indonesia has a population of 201,241,999 people according to the 2000 census. The fourth largest country in the world after China, India, and the US, Indonesia is also a multi-ethnic society with 1,072 ethnic and sub ethnic groups(2). They are spread from Aceh to Papua and many still live in remote areas. This ethnic diversity and cultural wealth is promoted as an asset supporting state unity, as reflected in the national slogan Bhinneka Tunggal Ika , 'unity in diversity'. During the Soeharto period, the 'unity' part of the slogan was emphasised and interpreted as uniformity and standardisation. Efforts were made to limit expressions of ethnic identity through development policies and programs which emphasised uniformity and were oriented towards economic growth. Focusing on ethnic identity was considered dangerous to state unity. Indigenous peoples were variously identified as 'native people', 'isolated people', 'swidden farmers 'and 'forest squatters'. East Asia, 1997: Avoidable or Inevitable?
Shane Walton
US-Canada Fulbright Program
Abstract In 1997 the nations of East Asia experienced the worst economic crisis in their history. At the time scholars presented a diverse array of possible explanations for the disaster, but found themselves unable to agree upon any one cause. We are now in a position to readdress this important question. This article thus reviews the existent scholarly works on the Crisis, in an attempt to find a unifying theme in the diverse analyses. It discovers that though there is a great diversity of opinions as to the most ‘fundamental’ cause, ranging from accusations of cronyism and the failure of the developmental state to indictments of the evils of liberalization, there seems to be a general consensus that the ‘proximate’ cause of the crisis was the immense rapid capital flight out of Asia. The article thus begins with an investigation of these capital flows. It contends that whipsaw movement of capital in and out of East Asia in 1997 was inherent to the structure of global finance, showing that the over-liquidity of financial markets and the psychology of investment both predispose financial markets to large, erratic, and potentially dangerous surges. The article concludes with a survey of measures that could protect developing nations from such dangerous flows.

Department of International Relations Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies Australian National University Postgraduate Seminar: INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL ECONOMY COURSE INFORMATION Semester 1 (February-June), 2001 Seminar Room B Tuesdays, 4:00-6:00pm Office Room 5122 COURSE DESCRIPTION This seminar provides an overview of the fields of international and comparative political economy to students who have no previous background knowledge. The main aim is to help students understand the interaction between political and economic systems, forces and actors and, in particular, such interaction at and between international and domestic levels. The course asks two main questions: first, how do states, social forces and various kinds of institutions affect the flow of economic resources within and across national boundaries? Second, how do economic forces constrain the behaviour of political actors at both international and domestic levels? The first half of the course is intended as an introduction to principal theoretical approaches to the study of international and comparative political economy, while the second half connects those theoretical perspectives to specific issue areas, which are organised under two broad categories: global interaction and national variation. Students are expected to do the required readings before class and participate actively in class discussion. The recommended readings are not required (though students will be asked to give brief presentation of some important pieces in class).

Things to watch for on a winter bike ride
The San Francisco Bay Area has been pounded by storm after storm lately, but what's a little rain to stop me from cycling? Here are the things I rode past, around, or over during the last few days:
  • Numerous upended trees. Some enormous. A landslide A dead fish. In the middle of the road. A dead snake. Same road. A live crab. A bit further on. Water so deep on the bike path that it covered my bottom bracket. Two teenagers hiding behind the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge getting very close to third base.

Nice! Be sure to leave that bike upside down for a while and (if you can) re-grease and re-pack that BB. I've been hearing about pouring down your way but couldn't guess how bad it was. Maybe you can be the first cyclist ever to get a puncture due to a live crab on the road.
