Life, the Universe, and Everything: An Interview with Douglas Adams
by David Silverman
First, a note about me. I’m a very conceited person. I see myself as a damn good writer who is quite eloquent and proficient at making points about Atheism and related issues. Fortunately for the rest of the population, there are some people out there who keep my ego in check. Every once in a while I am reminded of my limitations by certain individuals who so obviously surpass my abilities that I am forced to admit that I still have lots of work to do. Many of these people are part of American Atheists, and all serve the purpose of making the rest of me strive for self-improvement. Then there are people like Douglas Adams: talented writers so brilliant in their prose as to give even the most conceited writer-wannabe an inferiority complex. Many of these people are Atheists, but few will take the time for an interview for their fans. When they do, well, the result is something you save for future debates and arguments. For the rare reader who does not already know all about him, Douglas Adams is the creator of all the various manifestations of

Patch Size and Landscape Effects on Density and Nesting Success of Grassland Birds
Maiken Winter, Douglas H. Johnson, Jill A. Shaffer, Therese M. Donovan, W. Daniel Svedarsky Abstract: Spizella pallida ), Savannah sparrows ( Passerculus sandwichensis ), and bobolinks ( Dolichonyx oryzivorus ). Statistical models indicated that density was influenced by patch size, landscape, region, and local vegetation structure more so than by local vegetation structure alone. Both magnitude and direction of the response of density to patch size varied among regions, years, and species. In contrast, the direction of landscape effects was consistent among regions, years, and between Savannah sparrows and bobolinks. In each species, this landscape effect was independent of patch size. Nesting success was not clearly influenced by patch size or landscape composition, and none of the factors that influenced avian density also influenced nesting success in any of the 3 species. General statements on "optimal habitat" for grassland birds should therefore be viewed cautiously. Instead, long-term studies in different regions as well as a deeper understanding of the local system are needed to determine which factors are most important for grassland birds in a particular area. Key words: Bird density, bobolink, clay-colored sparrow

Douglas E. Winter: Ratchetting Up the Prose
Interviewed by Mark Campbell Douglas Winter was born in 1950 and grew up in the steel town of Granite City, Illinois. His mother encouraged him to read and write, even if it meant buying him subscriptions to Famous Monsters of Filmland. He attended Harvard Law School, from where he graduated in 1975. His first job was with Judge William H. Webster, later director of the FBI and CIA. By the 1980s, Winter was a partner in one of the nation's leading law firms, where he specialised in air disaster cases. His criticism, reviews and interviews have appeared in countless US magazines and newspapers. Among his published books are the definitive biography of Stephen King, The Art of Darkness, and the anthologies Prime Evil and Revelations. His short stories have been published with increasing regularity and have won several awards. Winter lives in Oakton, Virginia, a suburb of Washington DC, with his wife, Lynne, and their three dogs. Although he's now retired as a partner of the law firm, he continues to work on a limited basis. On his days off he can be found at home hunched over a computer, writing to the accompaniment of eclectic rock music and his ever-growing collection of obscure film soundtracks.
