He was born 30 October in St Louis , Missouri and grew up in Granite City, Illinois . He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1975 and became a lawyer in Washington, DC , currently working as partner at law firm Bryan Cave , concentrating on complex litigation, product liability , aerospace and aviation and entertainment law . Winter has also taught legal writing at the University of Iowa , and a life-long interest in horror has led him to develop a parallel career as horror writer and horror critic. Editor of horror anthologies Prime Evil Revelations (1997) and Faces of Fear (1985, revised 1990). Has also written biographies of Stephen King and Clive Barker . Though not so with Thomas. For him it is like being outside himself. The centre of his personality with all its dates and faces and happenings has disappeared, or practically so, and not even all these well-meant suggestions of what it contained can do much to bring it back. Every now and then something recognizable floats into his mind and then, surely, the rest must follow? But never. Thomas was nearly eighty before he began to forget on such a landslide scale. It hasn't left him foolish, simply remote and remote to himself as much as to others. What often occurs, as Simone de Beauvoir says, is that 'every individual does begin to go downhill after a certain point' and that what we like to think of as either an admirable or tolerable old age really means 'that the elderly person has found a physical and mental balance, and not that his physical being, his memory and his possibilities of psychomotor adaptation are those of a young man'. And yet, as with Thomas, a senescent imbalance comprising a physical vitality amounting to adventurousness and even a kind of beauty, plus a head whose treasures have already been seized by- death, is also endurable. In fact the contrast between his easy, active physique at eighty-five and a brain which is not so much vacant as seemingly unmarked lends mystery to him.

Of all the critics I've read, I personally feel that Winter gets it right more often than not. I'm reading an article by him now in On Writing Horror that is quite insightful. One point he makes is this: "If your sole ambition is commercial success...you probably lack the courage to write great horror fiction." I believe this to be true. True horror fiction is unlikely to attract the kind of huge audience that The Da Vinci Code commanded. I know that as soon as I say this someone will toss out names such as Anne Rice, Dean Koontz, and Stephen King. My first response is that Anne Rice doesn't write horror. The underlying power of her work lies in romance. Note, I'm not criticizing her for this, although it's not my cup of tea, but I sincerely believe that her readers are with her more for the love than the fear. Koontz can write horror with the best of them ( Phantoms Midnight ), but most of his work, especially his recent work, is more clearly suspense with some horror elements.
