In the American publishing field, Windling is one of the primary creative forces behind the mythic fiction resurgence that began in the early first through her work as an innovative editor for the Ace and Tor Books fantasy lines; secondly as the creator of the 'Fairy Tales' series of novels (featuring reinterpretations of classic fairy tale themes by Jane Yolen Steven Brust Pamela Dean Patricia C. Wrede ... Charles de Lint , and others); and thirdly as the editor of over thirty anthologies of magical fiction. She is also recognized as one of the founders of the urban fantasy genre, having published and promoted the first novels of Charles de Lint Emma Bull , and other pioneers of the form. With Ellen Datlow , Windling edited 16 volumes of Year's Best Fantasy and Horror (1986-2003), an anthology that reached beyond the boundaries of genre fantasy to incorporate magic realism , surrealism, poetry, and other forms of magical literature. Datlow and Windling also edited the

Windling, Terri, ed. - The Armless Maiden and Other Tales for Childhood's Survivors
add to memories The Armless Maiden is a collection of stories and poems (and the occasional essay) of fairy-tale rewrites, much like Windling and Ellen Datlow's Snow White, Blood Red series of anthologies (which I love and own all of). This one is a themed anthology, however; Windling notes that many of the pre-Victorian versions of fairy tales are on the dangers of childhood, on how mothers and fathers can be just as deadly as the wolf in the woods, and how children conquer and overcome these dangers and hardships. Some of the stories and poems are more suited to this theme than others, but then, some of my favorite stories are ones that don't quite fit. So I'm not really arguing.
Particular stories I liked: Jane Yolen's "Allerleirauh," a very creepy version of "Donkeyskin," which I have actually read in another anthology. It's still good though. Patricia A. McKillip's "The Lark and the Lion" takes the "Psyche and Cupid" story and adds an additional chapter, which I liked very much, given that I tend to severely doubt most happily ever afters. I also loved what her princess turned into. Tappan King's "Wolf's Heart" actually started out as another story, but I like what she ended up with.

In the Dark Wood: Abuse Themes in Common Fairy Tales The version of "Allerleirauh" told by the Brothers Grimm (called "All-Fur" or "All-Kinds-of Fur" in translation from German) begins with a king whose queen, on her deathbed, demands that he marry no one, unless she is as beautiful as the queen. The king promises; but no woman is found who is the dead queen's equal, except for the king's daughter. The king announces that he intends to marry her, "...for she is the living image of my dead wife" (Zipes 260). The daughter, frightened, tries to stall her father with impossible demands, but he meets each one. She is forced to flee to a neighboring kingdom disguised in a cloak of tattered furs. She works in the king's kitchen, and manages to catch the attention of the king with the enchanted dresses she's brought with her. They marry, and live happily ever after (Zipes 259-263). The last sentence of the Grimm brothers' "All-Kinds-of-Fur" tells us that this story, like most fairy tales, has a happy ending. But the assurance that "they lived happily until they died," tacked onto a long account of abuse and suffering, is not convincing. The final sentence notwithstanding, this tale is a tragedy, a story that symbolicallybut lucidlyportrays the unhappy life of a sexually abused child. (Ashliman) Yolen's retelling is short and brutal. She explores the idea, in a few brief pages, that abuse is rarely an isolated incident. "As she has said in a discussion of this tale, 'while I wanted this to have a happy ending, the story insisted otherwise'" (qtd. by Pilinovsky). Yolen's story begins, as do the traditional versions, with the death of a queen. The promises the king makes, however, are different. He promises to love the baby that the queen died giving birth to – which he does not do in the traditional versions; it’s a promise he twists to suit himself as his daughter grows up. And in Yolen's retelling, the king's promise to marry no one unless the new wife is as beautiful as the queen is not extracted from him, but volunteered, unasked (Yolen 36-39).
