A book review by Danny Yee In general I strongly dislike time-travel stories with their attendant implausibilities, but sometimes they have other qualities which redeem them. Doomsday Book Despite the weaknesses in the science and the implausible 2054 Oxford, I enjoyed Doomsday Book a lot. I much prefer well-written books with lousy science to engineering manuals dressed up as novels. I'm not sure it deserved its Hugo and Nebula award double, but Doomsday Book is definitely worth a read, especially if you are interested in epidemiology (used to produce a rather clever detective problem) or medieval English history. 19 December 1993

"I have always thought a lot about death and what, if anything, might happen afterwards." "I feel your name is a brand... that you have an obligation when people see your name on a book, that you really wrote that book." Connie Willis In a world where pigeonholing has become the norm, Connie Willis has done well to evade such a thing. Equally humorous, thought-provoking and, or, utterly serious in whatever world she decides to create and walk around in, Willis' work is known for running the gamut of emotional response as she effortlessly turns her own brand of mirror upon us and allows us to conceive of the answer ourselves while supplying her own. She refuses to back down from the very concept of what awaits us past the brink of death, or to show translucent we all can become, and often are. Willis is methodical in her research but knows not to overwhelm her readers with how much she has learned about a given topic. Instead, she makes sure she understands it well enough to tell the tale she wishes to tell. While perhaps known for her more historical fiction, Connie has proven herself comfortable in whichever kind of speculative fiction she chooses to write, spotting her stories likeable characters (or, if un-likeable, at least in the realm of the interesting) and letting the reader wade their way in instead of being qualified at the door... with over ten compelling novels and collections and counting, she must be doing something right.

Bellwether by Connie Willis
I have read a few short stories by Connie Willis ("At the Rialto" was one excellent example), but I was unsure of picking up a novel length story by her since I don't usually have the patience for long time travel or alternative history plots which seem to be the themes behind her most popular novels. So it was with some trepidation that I accepted a friend's recommendation and started on "Bellwether". I'm glad that I did: this was one of those novels that reads so easily that I could finish it in one sitting. The setting is not futuristic but a very commonplace (at least for 1996) research lab. Sandra Foster studies fads and trends obsessively, trying to find out why certain activities (with `low ability thresholds') or merchandising catch on for a brief period and then die out. Her life, and indeed the whole plot of this book, revolves around acquiring funding for her research. Like most researchers, the funding bureaucracy takes up 90% of her time. She even does research on getting funding to do research. A chance encounter with a fellow researcher in her lab who recently lost his funding for the study of chaos theory leads her closer to a scientific theory of fads. But can she retain her funding or her sanity before she makes her final discovery?

Home REVIEW: D.A. by Connie Willis REVIEW SUMMARY D.A. reads like Robert A. Heinlein on speed! MY RATING BRIEF SYNOPSIS : Theodora Baumgarten is erroneously enrolled as an IASA space cadet and subsequently tries to find out why. MY REVIEW
PROS
: Fast-moving story; Willis' writing style is thoroughly engaging and highly entertaining.
CONS : Somewhat predictable, especially for fans of Heinlein's juveniles, to which this story pays homage.
BOTTOM LINE : An excellent novella. In Connie Willis' novella, D.A. , Theodora Baumgarten is enrolled as an IASA space cadet and is quickly whisked away to the Academy space station, named the RAH after Robert A. Heinlein. (No coincidence - this story is overtly Heinleinian, which is good because it gives me two chances to say "Heinleinian".) While Theodora's appointment is considered a great honor by her friends, family and fellow students, all of whom would love to be in Theodora's space shoes, there is a problem: Theodora never actually enrolled in the IASA. With the help of her Earthside hacker friend, Kimkim, Theodora sets out to find out how she could possibly come to be signed up in the IASA. Reading D.A.

Friday, October 5, 2007 Connie Willis's To Say Nothing of the Dog is a time-travel novel that pays tribute to, while gently poking fun at, Three Men in a Boat Instead, To Say Nothing of the Dog Time travel stories tend not to be my thing: either they make my head hurt or they take a view of the universe I don't care for. I could take or leave the time-travel plot here. However, I adore (A couple other minor infelicities about the audio version: every time the title is worked into the narration, it really stands out, and sometimes it feels forced. Also, I was deeply disappointed to find that "placet" is pronounced with an audible "t"; I didn't take Latin and was mentally pronouncing it as though it were French, which sounds much more suited to romance. Not that this last is the book's fault, of course.) Comments: David Tate wrote on October 5, 2007 at 12:57 PM:

Water Witch
Publisher: Ace January 1982 ISBN: Format: Mass market Pages: Deza and her father are con artists who pass Deza off as a princess and water witch, although she seems to have real abilities as well. Now her father is dead in a crash and Deza is on her own. Perhaps she can continue their last con alone, or with the help of what might be the spirit of her father and what might be her imagination, but that leaves open the question of why her father abandoned and fled that last con when it seemed to be going fine. This is one of the first novels by both Connie Willis and Cynthia Felice, before Willis established her current sterling reputation. This is her first published novel; prior to this is only a short story collection. While it may look today like a typical "collaboration" between a famous and lesser-known author, I expect it's a true joint work. However, whether because of the collaboration or just because it's an early novel, this doesn't feel like a Willis novel. Connie Willis has a very distinctive, digressive, non-confrontationally persistent tone that's at least significantly dampened here. If you're looking for another novel like Doomsday Book or To Say Nothing of the Dog Water Witch will probably be a disappointment.

During the Hugo Award ceremonies, Harlan Ellison grabbed Connie Willis's breast. The SF community is not very happy about the incident.
Reports from LA Con IV are abounding after last weekend, and one of the biggest stirs is about the Hugo Awards, where Harlan Ellison groped Connie Willis ' breast during the ceremony. Willis, one of the classiest as well as most talented women writers in the field, did not react. Ellison has posted an apology on his message boards , but much of the science fiction community is still outraged. Patrick Nielsen Hayden compared it to Bush's unwanted shoulder-rub of the German Chancellor , saying that the basic message was: "Remember, you may think you have standing, status, and normal, everyday adult dignity, but we can take it back at any time. If you are female, you'll never be safe. You can be the political leader of the most powerful country in Europe. You can be the most honored female writer in modern science fiction. We can still demean you, if we feel like it, and at random intervals, just to keep you in line, we will."

At Mercy General Hospital, Dr. Joanna Lander will soon be paged not to save a life, but to interview a patient just back from the dead. A psychologist specializing in near death experiences, Joanna has spent two years recording the experiences of those who have been declared clinically dead and lived to tell about it. It's research on the fringes of ordinary science, but Joanna is about to get a boost from an unexpected quarter. A new doctor has arrived at Mercy General, one with the power to give Joanna the chance to get as close to death as anyone can. A brilliant young neurologist, Dr. Richard Wright has come up with a way to manufacture the near death experience using a psychoactive drug. Dr. Wright is convinced that the NDE is a survival mechanism and that if only doctors understood how it worked, they could someday delay the dying process, or maybe even reverse it. He can use the expertise of a psychologist of Joanna Lander's standing to lend credibility to his study. But he soon needs Joanna for more than just her reputation. When his key volunteer suddenly drops out of the study, Joanna finds herself offering to become Richard's next subject. After all, who better than she, a trained psychologist, to document the experience? Her first NDE is as fascinating as she imagined it would be so astounding that she knows she must go back, if only to find out why this place is so hauntingly familiar. But each time Joanna goes under, her sense of dread begins to grow, because part of her already knows why the experience is so familiar, and why she has every reason to be afraid....
