Williamson was born April 29 in Bisbee Arizona Territory , and spent his early childhood in western Texas. In search of better pastures, his family migrated to rural New Mexico in a horse-drawn covered wagon in 1915. The farming was difficult there and the family turned to ranching, which they continue to this day. Williamson discovered the local library and used it to educate himself. As a young man, he discovered the magazine Amazing Stories , after answering an ad for one free issue. He strove to write his own fiction, selling his first story at age 20: "The Metal Man" appeared in the Dec. 1928 issue of

"The twentieth century was a train," sings Jack Hardy, one of the great singer-songwriters of the last century, who rode it. The line is from a song called "The 20th Century," which appears in The Passing ), his last album but one. He is not yet 60. Like Jack Williamson, who is not yet 100, he is still alive. They have both scored lives of accomplishment during the century they just left. They both scored high. The song evokes a train, of course, the very train John Barrymore took from Chicago to New York in Twentieth Century ), dir Howard Hawks. It also evokes the wind-blurred abyss of the past, it evokes the 20th century itself, which was like a train, or a Ship of Fools filled to the gunwales with the humans of the West. The 20th Century was a progress; a great noisy locomotive of history we all thought we were in the van of, we readers and writers of science fiction, like Jack Williamson. And now that we have passed into a different dark, how fortunate it is to have Dr Williamson still here, so that, by trying to gain some measure of the man, we may obtain at the same time some measure of the extent of the passage from then to now. HISTORICAL NOTE The idea for a studies program examining the cultural and historical connections of Appalachia with Scotland (and later with Ireland) developed in the early 1980s when Barbara McDermitt, then a doctoral student at the School of Scottish Studies, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland, began studying this connection in the area of storytelling. McDermitt worked with Dr. Thomas G. Burton, Department of English, ETSU, and subsequently invited him to Edinburgh to share his knowledge of folklore with faculty and students at the School of Scottish Studies. There Burton and McDermitt, together with the Edinburgh faculty, discussed the possibility of establishing an Appalachian-Scottish studies program. From 1988 until 1996 the program was known as the Appalachian-Scottish Studies Program. The name changed to its present form in 1996 to denote its expanded mission of also examining the cultural and historical connection between Ireland and Appalachia. Dr. Burton directed the program from 1988-96. Upon Burton's retirement in 1996, Stevan Jackson, holding a joint appointment with CASS and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, ETSU, became director. Dr. Ted Olson became the current director in Fall 1999.

After 75 years of publishing, Jack Williamson is SF's Grandest Master
By Kathie Huddleston ack Williamson has been a storyteller for longer than most people have been alive. The 94-year-old Williamson may have started as a brash young man who wanted to try his hand at "scientifiction," but he's gone on to become one of the most revered science-fiction writers of all time. Born in 1908, Williamson traveled in a covered wagon to New Mexico, where he grew up on an isolated farm. He began his career in 1928, when he sold his first story, "The Metal Man," to the only "scientifiction" or science-fiction magazine that existed, Amazing Stories It's been 74 years of writing astounding fiction for Williamson. Some of his key works include the Legion of Space series, the Seetee series, the Humanoids series and the novels The Legion of Time and Darker Than You Think . Williamson might well have decided to slow down after his Grand Master Award in 1976, the second ever presented by the Science Fiction Writers of America. Instead, he has continued to publish compelling fiction, including the Hugo and Nebula award-winning novella "The Ultimate Earth" (
