Tad Williams
Tad Williams has held more jobs than any sane person should admit to singing in a band, selling shoes, managing a financial institution, throwing newspapers, and designing military manuals, to name just a few. He also hosted a syndicated radio show for 10 years, worked in theatre and television production, taught both grade-school and college classes, and worked in multimedia for a major computer firm. He is co-founder of an interactive television company, and is currently writing comic books and film and television scripts as well as novels. His novels include Tailchaser's Song , the bestselling Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn epic fantasy trilogy, the stand-alone fantasy Caliban's Hour , and most recently, the four-volume Otherland science fiction series: City of Golden Shadow River of Blue Fire Mountain of Black Glass , and Sea of Silver Light (still to be released). Tad and his wife live in London and the San Francisco Bay Area. They spend their occasional microseconds of leisure time engineering world peace and making sarcastic remarks about their pets. The Novels of Tad Williams
Last updated October 2003 Tad Williams is another California writer (along with Brin, Bear, Benford and Robinson). Unlike the above mentioned authors, Tad started out in the field of fantasy, but recently has moved to science fiction. Tad's first book was "Tailchaser's Song" and I have never read it (it is about a cat and told, I believe, from the cat's perspective). Then he wrote, over some six years, the fantasy trilogy called Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn , more commonly known as the Dragon Bone Chair trilogy. Recently he has started on a new project, expected to be some four books called Otherland . Otherland is essentially science fiction and when it is complete, I may have to move him into my science fiction area. I like Tad a great deal. He can write with flair, and sometimes with real beauty. He has a good feel for plot, his books are long but generally packed with action. His characters are generally well thought out, though only one really came alive for me in the fantasy trilogy (the main character). Tad likes giving a voice to his evil characters. This gives him the opportunity to describe some of the nasty things the bad guys do and, more rarely, their reasons for their actions. Considering how

Tad Williams
Tad Williams isn't usually listed with cyberpunk authors, even though the Otherland books take place in cyberspace, with characters who are hackers, gamers, evil corporate executives, etc. I suspect that Williams' work in fantasy for his first trilogy may have classified him as a fantasy writer, and the fantasy elements in Otherland seem to confirm that. (Characters encounter giants, Alice in Wonderland characters, etc. in the VR environment.) Also there isn't a classic cyberpunk hero. Instead of Hiro Protagonist or Neo, we have a South African Woman and her bushman student as the questors seeking out the mysterious corporate entities who are capturing young gamers in cyberspace traps. Neither of these seem reasons to exclude the Otherworld books from my cyberpunk list. Besides, I really like them! (And Williams sure looks more like a c-punk author that Sterling does!) Flow, My Tears
For some reason we've been thinking and talking a lot about death this week around the house. Not particularly because of Heath Ledger (or Brad Refro, another talented young actor who went way too early) but more because it's a phase my eight-year-old daughter's going through. She got a pet lizard for Christmas, after a year's worth of begging/pleading/extorting us. Spike is a Bearded Dragon, a lovely little chap with a sort of mellow Sufi nature, and all Daughter seems to think about is what's going to happen when he dies. "Daddy, when Spike dies can we get him a real tombstone, not cardboard?"

Although author Tad Williams is best known for his best-selling fantasy books, he is very interested in the future. His new Otherland series is set a few decades into the 21st Century and he cites the triumphs of the space program as one of his primary inspirations. In this interview, conducted during Williams' cross-country signing tour in support of Mountain of Black Glass , the third book of the four-part Otherland series, he talks about the books, along with insights science fiction offers, the evolutionary reasons for exploring new worlds, and the possibility of life out there. You're probably tired of pitching Otherland by now, but if you'd like to say anything about it right now, feel free. More Stories

Mountain of Black Glass: Foreword
Actually, it's been great fun. One of the things that's been really exciting has been the chance to write near-future SF. It's really fun to play around with stuff that's happening in the contemporary world, to write satire. To play the Swiftean card. In Otherland, you're blending futurism the worlds we create with myth the worlds we inherit from the past. This reminded me of Bradbury's

      Interview: Tad Williams
      By Mary Anne Mohanraj
14 May 2001 T ad Williams is the world-renowned author of such epic fantasies as the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series, Tailchaser's Song the Otherland series, etc. He's about to take his writing to a new place onto the Internet! His new project is called Shadowmarch an episodic serial story, presented on the web. He's here today to tell us more about this exciting project. Mary Anne Mohanraj (MM): Tad, why don't we start with you just telling us about this story. What will it look like? What do you hope it will become? Tad Williams (TW): What it will look like in the beginning is a nice text-based site with illustrations available (although not incorporated into the text, which would slow downloading for those who want to read offline). The story, after all, is what it's about. We'll also have a message board, announcements, behind-the-scenes stuff about both the project itself and the world in which the story takes place. It's all new I'm creating the world and characters now. What we aim to have over the long run is a very versatile site with lots of stuff available tons of art by lots of different people (including fans, I hope), some animation, music, perhaps some 3-D renderings of the locations (so you could actually tour the castle that is at the heart of the story) and anything else we can think of that seems cool and works in the online format. We plan to plow a regular proportion of any profits back into upgrading the site.

Tad Williams and Shawn McManus managed what I thought was impossible make me forget about Aquaman 1.0 for a moment and actually want to keep reading the further adventures of Arthur Joseph.
Yet that's exactly what they did, just in time for the book to end. Luckily Tad was generous enough to talk to the Shrine about his brief but important part in the history of Aquaman:
Aquaman Shrine: Did you read comics growing up?
Tad Williams: God, did I. Everythingfunny animal books, Archie comics, you name it. Then when I was about eight or nine I fell in love with superheroes, and began reading thoseDC and Marvel primarily, of course. I mean, I may have owned a few Harvey superhero books, but that would only have been if someone gave them to me or something.
AMS: How familiar with Aquaman were you when you got offered the book?
