Thornton Wilder Born in the city called the Berkley of the Midwest, Thornton Wilder introduced himself to the world in Madison, Wisconsin, on April 17, 1897. He became famous as a novelist and playwright and is best known for writing The Bridge of San Luis Rey Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth His twin brother died at birth, and Wilder grew up with an older brother, Amos Niven, and three younger sisters, Charlotte, Isabel, and Janet. As a member of a talented and industrious family, Wilder lived for a while in China. Amos Parker Wilder, a newspaper owner and editor, was U.S. consul general to Hong Kong and Shanghai, while Wilder's older brother, Amos Niven, was a well regarded professor of New Testament scholarship, an inspirational essayist, and a distinguished poet. He was also well regarded by the ladies around the tennis courts. Of Wilder's sisters, Charlotte became a professor of English and an award-winning poet. Isabel was the author of three popular novels and the curator of Yale University's theater archive. The youngest Wilder sibling, Janet Wilder Dakin, was a professor of biology, an author, and a noted environmentalist. As a boy, young Wilder grew up near a university theater that performed Greek dramas, and his mother let him participate as a member of the chorus. He never forgot the experience and vowed that someday he would write for the theater.

Thornton Wilder
American writer and playwright, best known for the Pulizer Prize awarded play OUR TOWN (1938), which was seen by the critic Brendan Gill as "a nightmare of passive awareness felt through all eternity", misinterpreted as a slice of Normann Rockwell-like Americana. Wilder's breakthrough novel was THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY (1927), an examination of justice and altruism in the fates of five travelers in the 18-century Peru, who happen to be crossing the finest bridge in the land when it breaks and throws them into the gulf below. A priest interprets the story of each victim in an attempt to explain the working of divine providence. Thornton Wilder was born in Madison, Wisconsin, as one of five children of Amos Parker Wilder, a newspaper editor and diplomat, and Isabella (Niven) Wilder. In 1906 the family moved to Hong Kong, where his father had been appointed American Consul General. After six months his mother returned with the children to the United States, but the family rejoined again in 1911 in Shanghai, where his father had been transferred. Wilder stayded in China for a year. During WW I Wilder served for eight months in the Coast Guard. He received his B.A. from Yale University in 1920 and went to Rome, where he studied archaelogy. By 1926 he had received an M.A. degree in French literature from Princeton University. In the same year appeared his first novel, THE CABALA. From 1930 to 1937 he taught literature and classics at the University of Chicago.

Wilder, Thornton 1897-1975
page: Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright and novelist Thornton Niven Wilder was a prolific writer prominent in twentieth-century literature. A discreet homosexual, his sexual proclivities were kept far out of the limelight. Wilder's mainstream literary works are landmarks of American literature, but they reveal scant traces of his homosexuality. He can be credited for acting as a behind-the-scenes ambassador for the Lost Generation, making their avant-garde themes accessible to a middle-brow American public. Sponsor Message.
Family Background and Education Wilder was born in Madison, Wisconsin on April 17, 1897, though he spent most of his boyhood in Berkeley, California. As an adolescent, Wilder isolated himself in academic projects, heeding his father's admonitions for constant self-improvement. Wilder's entire family was one of achieving, industrious, self-reliant Congregationalists with a strong work ethic. His father was the outspoken editor of a small-town newspaper in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1906 he was appointed U. S. consul general to Hong Kong and, later, to Shanghai. After retiring from the foreign service in 1914, he directed the Yale-in-China Association and became known as a popular public speaker.

Wilder was an American playwright, novelist, essayist, and screenwriter. He sought to explore the universal in the particular in his writings: his stereotypical characters and conventional themes reflect his belief that realism in the theater cannot adequately portray the human condition. The form and content of his novels also reveal his rejection of contemporary modes of literary expression. His fiction and his drama have thus been the subject of critical controversy for their lack of contemporary theme or exposition. Wilder was three times the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize: for his novel The Bridge of San Luis Ray in 1927, and for his plays Our Town in 1938 and The Skin of Our Teeth in 1943. Thornton Wilder
Thornton Wilder (April 17, 1897December 7, 1975) was an American writer. Born Thornton Niven Wilder in Madison, Wisconsin, he was the son of a U.S. diplomat, spending part of his childhood in China. After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War I, he earned his B.A. at Yale University in 1920. Six years later, his first novel, The Cabala was published. In 1927, The Bridge of San Luis Rey brought commercial success and his first Pulitzer Prize in 1928. From 1930 to 1937 he taught at the University of Chicago. Wilder was the author of Our Town, a popular play (and later film) set in fictional Grover's Corner, New Hampshire. Our Town employs a choric narrator called the "Stage Manager," and a minimalist set to underscore the universality of human experience. It won the 1938 Pulitzer Prize.

His farce The Matchmaker (1954) was filmed in 1958. In 1964 it was adapted into the hit stage musical , and also made into a film.
