Introduction
Laura and Almanzo Wilder were tired of hard winters, droughts and failing crops in the northern states. So in July, 1894, Laura, Almanzo and eight-year old Rose Wilder, packed up a covered wagon with all of their belongings and left De Smet, South Dakota, and headed toward southern Missouri. As they moved south they were in search of a new home where they could farm and make a good living for their family. Laura studied the land and agricultural possibilities as they traveled in a covered wagon across several states toward their goal of Mansfield, Missouri, The Land of the Big Red Apple. She recorded her observations in a diary. The story of Almanzo and Laura's journey can be read in Laura's book On The Way Home: The Diary of a Trip from South Dakota to Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894

Little House on the Prairie
Yesterday's assigned reading for students in my class at UIUC was Little House on the Prairie. Most of the students read the book in childhood, and some remember it being read to them by a teacher or parent. Re-reading it now as adults, they were surprised at the multiple occurrences of what they described as derogatory and racist depictions of Native people that they do not recall.
One young woman remembers the phrase in the book "The only good Indian is a dead Indian" and another remembers feeling worried that Laura and her family were in danger.

  • by Merideth Messman: Grade 6 Laura Ingalls Wilder Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote all of the Little House books. All Laura's books are based on her life. February 7, 1867, Laura Elizabeth Ingalls, was born in a little house in the big woods. She had two sisters and no brothers. She lived on the prairie for three years and then moved back to the woods. Laura moved to a lot of places. In July 1868, Pa moved the family west when Laura was only one and a half years old. It took almost two months. In 1869, Pa and the family settled in Indian Territory. (Later it became Kansas.) In 1874, Laura moved to Plum Creek, Walnut Grove, Minnesota. In 1879, Ma and Pa decided to move into territory that later became South Dakota. In 1880 -1881, the Ingalls family had a long, hard winter.

Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in 1867 in the log cabin described in Little House in the Big Woods . She and her family traveled by covered wagon across the Midwest. Later, Laura and her husband, Almanzo Wilder, made their own covered-wagon trip with their daughter, Rose, to Mansfield, Missouri. There, believing in the importance of knowing where you began in order to appreciate how far you've come, Laura wrote about her childhood growing up on the American frontier. For millions of readers Laura lives on forever as the little pioneer girl in the beloved Little House books.
A special note regarding changes being made to the Little House series: The publisher of the Little House on the Prairie series has decided to repackage the paperback editions in order to keep them "relevant to a new generation." The revamped books will replace the beloved covers by Garth Williams with photographic covers, and remove the inside art. However, his art will remain in the colorized paperback edition. The boxed set we offer contains the unabridged editions with black and white illustrations by Garth Williams. (The boxed set is currently out of stock).
Unfortunately, the other Little House books that tell the stories of Laura's family (Martha, Charlotte, Caroline and Rose) are also being changed. They will be abridged and, in some cases, more than 100 pages have been cut from the original edition. They will also have photographic covers. The unabridged editions, which are the ones we carry, will be allowed to go out of print by the publisher. Some already are.

    Laura Ingalls Wilder
Laura Ingalls Wilder (February 7, 1867 - February 10, 1957) was an American author. She authored the series of historical fiction books for children based on her childhood in a pioneer family. The most well-known of her books is Little House on the Prairie. Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in Wisconsin to parents Charles Phillip and Caroline Lake (Quiner) Ingalls. She was the second of five children. The details of her family life through adolescence are chronicled in her semi-autobiographical "Little House" books. As her books reveal, she and her family moved extensively throughout the mid-west during her childhood. Although she was a bright student, her education was rather sporadic, a result of her family often living in isolated areas where schools were not yet established, or the family's finances resulting in Laura interrupting her schooling to earn money. The family eventually settled in De Smet, Dakota Territory, where she attended school more regularly and worked as a seamstress and teacher before she married homesteader Almanzo James Wilder (1857–1949) in 1885. She had two children: the novelist, journalist and political theorist Rose Wilder Lane (1886–1968), and an unnamed son, who died soon after birth in 1889.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant Presented every July in Walnut Grove, the Wilder Pageant is a family-oriented outdoor drama with all Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie book characters. An actress playing a 70-year-old Laura narrates the story, reflecting on her life in Walnut Grove during the 1870s. The stage at the hillside amphitheater where the drama is presented was designed to facilitate extensive lighting, sound, special effects, and imaginative sets. Laura Ingalls Wilder, famous author of the children's Little House series of books, was born in Wisconsin, and moved with her family to Walnut Creek. Her family was one of the pioneer families who settled Walnut Grove, following the Homestead Act of 1862.

The documentary legacy of Rose Wilder Lane and her mother, Laura Ingalls Wilder, encompassed in the holdings of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch, Iowa. A journalist and philosopher, Lane also was the first biographer of Herbert Hoover. In fact, her work on "The Making of Herbert Hoover" (1919) led to a friendship with the Great Humanitarian that lasted more than forty years. Chronology of the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder Lane's papers at the Hoover Library document her extraordinary life as a newspaper reporter in San Francisco and other cities, and as a publicist for the American Red Cross during World War I. Her papers also include details of travels across Europe with sojourns to France and Albania, and her work in later years promoting Libertarian economic and political ideas. Most importantly, Lane's papers tell of her success as an author of books and magazine articles. The 30 linear feet of correspondence, diaries, book drafts, and other writings are rich in personal perspective and introspection.
Rose Wilder Lane The papers also reveal Lane's important role as the editor of the classic "Little House on the Prairie" books written by her mother. Laura Ingalls Wilder had only limited writing experience when she embarked on the series of books that captivate young readers to the present day. Quite logically, Laura turned to Rose, a more experienced writer, for assistance with the series.

The Love Song of Laura Ingalls Wilder
is an unusual collection of poems that combines craft, innovation, humour and down-to-earth insight in a focused and riveting read that will charm poetry buffs of every stripe. The poems in The Love Song of Laura Ingalls Wilder subversively and imaginatively inhabit the voices of characters from Wilder’s famous Little House books—human and non-human, animate and inanimate—but launch them in new directions. Rather than acting as extensions of Wilder’s stories, the voices, characters and details in the poems become vehicles for modern-day questions and observations. With titles like “Ma’s Green Delaine Dress,” “Mary’s Fingers,” “Pa’s Rifle” and “Pa’s Penis,” the poems in The Love Song of Laura Ingalls Wilder are anything but conventional. Peculiar, gripping and exquisitely crafted
