Laura Ingalls Wilder
Biography Laura Elizabeth Ingalls was born on February 7, 1867, in the big woods of Wisconsin. She was the second daughter of Charles and Caroline Ingalls. In 1868, Pa and Ma took baby Laura and her sister Mary from the big woods to Chariton County, Missouri. They didn't stay in Missouri for long. Inspired by the Homestead Act of 1868 (which offered 160 acres of land to the settlers who would farm it and live on it for five years), Pa took the family to the prairies. The land Pa chose was about twelve miles from Independence, Kansas, within the boundaries of the Osage Diminished Reserve. There, Pa built a house and stable with the help of a friend, and neighbor, Mr. Edwards. After building a house and planting crops, the Ingalls were forced to leave because the government had changed its mind, and soldiers were coming to burn the houses and shoot people off of the land. Pa heard this and left his home immediately. This happened just after their third daughter, Carrie, was born. The girls went back to the big woods. Now the girls were able to see more of their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Laura and Mary went to Barry Corner School and spent lots of time playing with their cousins. Ma was glad to be home, but Pa longed to go west. They did go back west in 1874. The Ingalls lived in a dugout near Walnut Grove, Minnesota until Pa was able to build a beautiful house of sawed boards. Pa raised a wonderful wheat crop until the grasshoppers attacked!

Our Author Study of Laura Ingalls Wilder
I must admit...this is my favorite unit of study! I discovered the Little House books in third grade, and have read and reread the entire series many, many times! And now, with the beautiful picture books and easy chapter book adaptations, it's fun to bring to a first grade level! Here are some of the books we read:

Christmas Stories
Laura and Nellie
Adventures of Laura and Jack
Winter Days in the Big Woods
Deer in the Wood
Christmas in the Big Woods
A Little House Birthday Farmer Boy Birthday A Little House ABC A Little House book of Family A Little House Book of Animals Dance at Grandpa's Going to Town Summertime in the Big Woods Sugar Snow Pioneer Girl (Anderson) Laura Ingalls Wilder (Wallner) Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Rookie Biography These "toddler" books are great for beginning readers! Hello Laura! Laura's Garden Laura's Bedtime Laura Helps Pa Happy Birthday, Laura! Merry Christmas, Laura! Laura's Little House (lift-the flap book) Laura's Christmas (lift-the-flap book) We begin this unit in November and introduce Laura and her family. We focus on both the differences and similiarities of pioneer family life and modern family life. A Venn diagram is a very useful tool for comparisions...we use it quite a bit during this unit! We make individual booklets called "Laura's Family" where we write about each character. We also create a three-way timeline, linking this study to that of the first Thanksgiving. We add pictures to a long sheet of paper which depict activities in the 1600's (Pilgrims), the 1800's (Pioneers) and today. This provides a great visual for the children to compare three time periods. Because Laura spent part of her life in Indian Territory in Kansas, we read excerpts from "Little House on the Prairie" about the Osage Indians and their visits to the Ingalls' family. We even find Native American beads in our room just as Laura and Mary did at an abandoned camp! Then we string them just as they did for Baby Carrie!

The book that made literary history is now available in paperback! "Did Laura Ingalls Wilder really write the 'Little House' books? William Holtz's biography of Rose Wilder Lane, The Ghost in the Little House, answers this question in a way that will jolt fans of the much-loved children's series. . . . Holtz's vivid and sympathetic biography brings to our attention the real accomplishments of a remarkable and complicated woman who is no longer nameless: Rose Wilder Lane, co-author of the 'Little House' books." San Antonio Express-News "Holtz's book makes clear for the first time that [Lane] achieved something important and lasting in her writing with the Little House books. His argument about the collaboration between the two women is entirely convincing, and the next time I see the little House series on the shelf at the bookstore, I'll imagine Rose Wilder Lane's name next to her mother's on their covers." Los Angeles Times Book Review "A significant achievement. Holtz has uncovered the buried life of a woman whose struggle to separate herself from her mother and forge her own independent identity replicates the dilemma of many women, whose dedication to writing involved the sacrifice of her own ambitions, whose experience of American life during decades of cataclysmic social and political change comprises a life worth telling. . . . In setting the record straight with fullness, fairness and detail, William Holtz has made a genuine contribution to American life and letters."

Laura did not begin her first book until 1931. Her daughter Rose had become an accomplished journalist and writer in California, so Laura, quite logically, turned to Rose, a more experienced writer, for assistance. When Laura submitted her proposal to Harper Brothers for a single-volume story about her life, the editors suggested instead that she write a series of books about her life in frontier communities across the Midwest. Working together, Laura and Rose shaped the stories to appeal to young readers. The books met with instant success and all except Farmer Boy (1933) were Newberry Honor books. In 1954, the American Library Association established the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award of which Laura was the first recipient. Laura died on February 10, 1957, at her home, Rocky Ridge Farm, in Mansfield, Missouri.

Generations of children have benefitted from her life story through her "Little House" books. Laura Ingalls Wilder's life is a fascinating subject, and Wilder historian William Anderson does it justice in his books about the popular author. The books are all well written and interesting. They vary a good deal in design and content, however.
"Pioneer Girl: The Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder"
"Pioneer Girl" is a beautiful picture book, with striking illustrations by artist Dan Andreasen. The book was honored as a 1999 Notable Children's Trade Book in Social Studies. It is designed for ages 7 and up. The book provides an overview of Laura's life, rather than providing a great many details. However, it is very effective in showing how this pioneer girl grew up and as an adult in her 60s became a popular children's author.

Introduction
Laura Ingalls was born in Pepin, Wisconsin, a few years after the end of the Civil War. As a young girl, Laura moved with her family to the Dakota Territory to homestead. Having mistakenly settled on Indian land, the family moved again to Minnesota, "on the banks of Plum Creek." In the mid-1870s they became innkeepers in Iowa, but later in the decade traveled back to Dakota Territory where they again homesteaded. Near the town of De Smet, Laura Ingalls taught school and in 1885 married Almanzo Wilder. In l894 due to poor weather and financial conditions, the Wilders with daughter Rose made a six-month wagon journey to Mansfield, Missouri. Laura Wilder helped build a permanent home, Rocky Ridge Farm, and worked at farming tasks. Her first published writing appeared in the Missouri Ruralist in 1911. She founded the Mansfield Farm Loan Association, was active in that organization and continued to write. The first volume of the "Little House" series, Little House in the Big Woods, was published in 1932 when Wilder was sixty-five. Between 1933 and 1943 six more "Little House" books and Farmer Boy appeared, The enduringly popular stories are based on her childhood and chronicle, with some artistic license, the peregrinations and daily lives of the Ingalls family. Wilder wrote the stories because she realized she had lived history, and she wanted children to learn about America's heritagefrontier life, homesteading, the coming of the railroadsas she had experienced it as a child. Even though the country had changed considerably since her youth, Wilder noted in 1955 that the values of honesty, truth and courage remained.

As Laura Ingalls Wilder realized they would, her widely loved stories of her prairie childhood have become much more than a nostalgic blend of myth, memories, and autobiography. Historically, John Miller reveals, they have much to tell us about the realities of day-to-day living and attitudes in the nineteenth century. History and literature are closely intertwined, Miller contends, and in this book he illustrates how Wilder's novels enhance our understanding of history and how, simultaneously, a historical perspective framed Wilder's fiction. Wilder, he shows, interwove content and form to produce a sentimental and compelling, yet nuanced and believable, picture of family life on the agricultural frontier. Focusing on Wilder's novels set in and around De Smet, South Dakota, which include

A Letter from the PTSA Co-Presidents January 2, 2008
Dear Wilder Community,
Happy New Year! As we launch into 2008, we’d like to take a brief moment to reflect on the PTSA accomplishments during the fall of 2007, as well as tell you about upcoming events.
January will see the continuation of our before, during and after school enrichment classes, as well as rehearsals starting for the musical “Seussical.” In addition to all of the programs already highlighted in this letter, the Wilder PTSA also funded Teacher Grants, Field Trips, Specialist Grants, Staff Appreciation, Assemblies, Parent Organizer, School Beautification…the list goes on and on. And, have you noticed the beautiful, new Reader Board in front of the school? Your PTSA donations helped to fund this joint district/PTSA project, and once again, contributed to making Wilder a better place.
None of the above would be possible without fundraising, so we’d like to update you on where we currently stand. In September we reported that our goal this year was to raise $43,650 to meet our operating expenses (which works out to about $87 per student). So far we are slightly under our estimates due to lower than expected Pass-the-Hat contributions and PACE Program sign-ups in the fall.
