White House Dream Team: Laura Ingalls Wilder
Laura Ingalls Wilder Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867 in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Reflecting the pioneer spirit of the era, Laura's family moved several times throughout her childhood, living for periods in Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota. Life on the frontier was difficult, and Laura's family experienced many hardships that threatened their survival. For example, grasshoppers destroyed their crops two seasons in a row, and a winter of continuous blizzards threatened their supplies. Laura's brother died nine months after his birth, and Laura's sister Mary lost her eyesight at the young age of 15 because of a stroke. The lessons of life on the prairie in America's heartland made a lasting impression on Laura. Laura and her sisters attended nearby schools during their childhood, and Laura's love for learning sparked her interest in teaching. At age 15 while living in De Smet, South Dakota, Laura earned her teaching certificate. In a rural area just twelve miles from De Smet, she began her first teaching job. During this time, she met and married Almanzo Wilder.

She was born in Wisconsin, lived in Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, and South Dakota (then Dakota Territory) with her family often at the front edge of the sweeping westward wave of pioneers. Only the influence of her mother, who wanted her girls to have an education and some stability, kept Laura's ever-restless father from continuing to move ever onward. Laura's life was not greatly different from many of the other young women who were her contemporaries, save that in her later years Laura revisited her childhood in memory, sharing her stories in a series of books that came to be known as "The Little House Books."

Northern Great Plains, 1880-1920
On February 7 , 1867, Laura Elizabeth Ingalls, the author of the beloved semi-autobiographical Little House series, was born in Wisconsin , the second daughter of Charles and Caroline Ingalls. The basic facts of her life correspond to those related in her books about her family's experiences on the American frontier during the 1870's and 1880's. The Northern Great Plains, 1880-1920 collection contains many images of families similar to the Ingalls who pioneered the settlement of the Dakota Territory . The image below is not of the Ingalls family, but the father and four daughters pictured are reminiscent of Pa Ingalls and his four girls, Mary, Laura, Carrie, and baby Grace. Laura's three sisters, her parents, "Ma" and "Pa," their good dog Jack, her school friends in the little town on the prairie, and her courtship and marriage to Almanzo Wilder are all well-known to her readers.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's Well-Insulated 'Little House'
By JONATHAN YARDLEY Thursday, November 8, 2007; Page C01 An occasional series in which The Post's book critic reconsiders notable and/or neglected books from the past. In February 1867, less than two years after the end of the Civil War, a girl was born in rural Wisconsin . She heard stories of the war firsthand as a child in the Midwest, saw and talked to men still wearing their wartime uniforms, and lived her entire girlhood on, or very close to, the frontier. She was 65 before she published her first book, "Little House in the Big Woods," under the name of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Author Laura Ingalls Wilder. (Herbert Hoover Presidential Libr)

Harris Menu: Background: On February 7, 1867, Laura Ingalls was born in the Big Woods near Pepin, Wisconsin. She was the second daughter born to Charles and Caroline Ingalls. Laura lived through a difficult period of history and overcame a variety of struggles. Yet through it all, she still managed to become a great author of children's books. It is through her contributions that many children have learned about life on the frontier. Laura moved more than once in her life. In her early life it was always by covered wagon. Laura's father was inspired by the Homestead Act of 1862 which made it possible to obtain 160 acres of land with certain provisions. With this in mind he took his family to Montgomery County in Kansas and settled there. Not long after they had been there, they were forced to move out because the land that they had settled on was technically Native American Territory. In 1871, they moved back to Wisconsin. In 1874, the family settled in Plum Creek, Minnesota, and lived there for several years. Later, the Ingalls moved to the town of De Smet in Dakota Territory. They were the first settlers in the town. While here, the Ingalls once again attempted to get land through the provisions of the Homestead Act. They succeeded, and in 1886 Charles Ingalls officially had a farm of his own.

Original Little House on the Prairie Cabin Site
Did you know that the official historic site of the Little House on the Prarie is located southwest of Independence, Kansas (not Missouri). There was a small log cabin that was rebuilt by heart warming local volunteers after reading the description found in Laura Ingalls Wilder's book. All the references to surrounding terrain can be found a short distance from the reconstructed cabin. Whether it's really the true log cabin site remains to be proven but the state of Kansas has declared the location of the rebuilt cabin as the official site.
