Oscar Wilde
I t is not so much his own neuroticism but rather the pathologically expressed moral values of the times he lived in which caused Oscar Wilde to plummet from the height of a brilliant career into the very depths. Granted, he did have a set of eccentric parents. His father, Sir William Wilde was a noted eye and ear surgeon who had several illegitimate children from extramarital affairs. Oscar's mother, Lady Jane Francesca Agnes Elgee Wilde, was a flamboyant and unconventional woman for her time a poetess and a nationalist who fought for women's rights. She went by the pen-name of "Speranza". Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin on October 16, 1854, two years after the eldest son of the family, William. Because Lady Wilde had longed for a daughter as a second child, she is said to have often dressed little Oscar in girls' clothing. A daughter, Isola, was born to the family in 1858 but she died at the age of eight, which affected the twelve-year old Oscar deeply. He had been close to his little sister and he later wrote the poem Requiescat , to perpetuate her memory.

Playwright, novelist, musician, poet, philanthropist, historian and short story writer - these are just a few of the professions of individuals that Oscar Wilde has corrupted with his rampant sexuality and Rabelaisian appetites. He is also connected with the XNTRX (commonly reffered to as "eccentrics" by those who don't know what's good for them) a group of rouge Academic Decathletes from Burbank High. A man whose wisdom touches on nearly every conceivable topic, often without consent, which in turn has led to several lawsuits. Reknown'd for his beautiful diction and his skilled oratory , Oscar is without doubt one of the leading literary figures of the first few days of March in 1897. Oscar Wilde is hailed as one of the most awesome men who ever existed and ruler of Uncyclopedia without really having done anything to merit this. Just accept it.

Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford . A brilliant student, his poem Ravenna won the 1878 Newdigate Prize. Soon after leaving university his first volume of poetry, Patience , was published. In 1880 Wilde went on a lecture tour of the USA. When immigration officials asked him if he had anything to declare he replied, "Only my genius".
W ilde married Constance Lloyd in 1884 and the couple had two sons. When the boys w ere children Wilde wrote fairy stories for them that were later published as The Happy Prince and Other Tales (1888). This was followed two years later by the novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890) and a book on the role of the artist, The Soul of Man under Socialism
However, it was a playwright that Wilde had his greatest success. Comedies such as Lady Windermere's Fan A Woman of No Importance An Ideal Husband (1895) and T he Importance of Being Earnest (1895) made him one of Britain's most famous writers.
By 1895 Wilde had left his wife and began having an homosexual affair w ith Alfred Douglas. When the Marquis of Queensberry heard about his son's relationship with Wilde, he publicly accused the writer of being a "ponce and sodomite". Wilde sued for libel but he lost his case and was then himself prosecuted an

The Long Conversion of Oscar Wilde ANDDREW MCCRACKEN Oscar Wilde is widely celebrated as an artist persecuted for his homosexuality, a sort of protomartyr for the cause of gay rights, and the center of a circle of unconventional poets and artists known as decadents and aesthetes. The current celebration of Wilde as gay martyr is certainly one obvious interpretation of his life, but it oversimplifies his complexity; indeed, it ignores the major movement of his life, a life that may also be seen as a long and difficult conversion to the Roman Catholic Church.
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
"I am not a Catholic," said Oscar Wilde. "I am simply a violent Papist." This statement, like so many of Wilde's outrageous paradoxes, conceals a sober truth beneath its blithe wit. Another example would be his jest that, of all religions, Catholicism is the only one worth dying in. Looking back over his life more than a hundred years later, we can be forgiven for seeing the irony in such statements, for Wilde's fascination with Catholicism, its mysteries and rituals, did set the stage for his death-bed conversion. And we can certainly perceive justice in the fact that the man who cracked such jokes also believed that life imitated art: ultimately, then, the joke was on him. Wilde's name is much in the air these days. There are stage plays about his life, a recent feature film starring Stephen Fry and Jude Law, and articles in the national press. The centenary of his premature death in 1900 at age 46 was widely celebrated in the literary and gay communities with moving testimonies to Oscar Wilde, the persecuted genius and gay man, victim of a repressive and judgmental social order.

Indeed, many of our members are glad to say that they have never seen a meat tea.

De Profundis
by Oscar Wilde
. . . Suffering is one very long moment. We cannot divide it by seasons. We can only record its moods, and chronicle their return. With us time itself does not progress. It revolves. It seems to circle round one centre of pain. The paralysing immobility of a life every circumstance of which is regulated after an unchangeable pattern, so that we eat and drink and lie down and pray, or kneel at least for prayer, according to the inflexible laws of an iron formula: this immobile quality, that makes each dreadful day in the very minutest detail like its brother, seems to communicate itself to those external forces the very essence of whose existence is ceaseless change. Of seed-time or harvest, of the reapers bending over the corn, or the grape gatherers threading through the vines, of the grass in the orchard made white with broken blossoms or strewn with fallen fruit: of these we know nothing and can know nothing. For us there is only one season, the season of sorrow. The very sun and moon seem taken from us. Outside, the day may be blue and gold, but the light that creeps down through the thickly-muffled glass of the small iron-barred window beneath which one sits is grey and niggard. It is always twilight in one's cell, as it is always twilight in one's heart. And in the sphere of thought, no less than in the sphere of time, motion is no more. The thing that you personally have long ago forgotten, or can easily forget, is happening to me now, and will happen to me again to-morrow. Remember this, and you will be able to understand a little of why I am writing, and in this manner writing. . . .

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was the youngest son of Dublin's Sir William Wilde, a wealthy eye and ear surgeon who was as well known for his foul personal habits as he was for his standard textbook on aural surgery, and Lady Jane "Speranza" Wilde, an eccentric and elephantine woman who used her chic literary salon in Dublin (and later London) to further the Irish independence movement. Exposed at an early age to the world of lively and intelligent conversation, Wilde won scholarships to Trinity and later (in 1874) to Oxford for his academic achievements in the study of ancient Greek. At Oxford, where he studied philosophy, Wilde came under the influence of two scholars: John Ruskin (author of Modern Painters and The Stones of Venice ) and Walter Pater (author of Studies in the History of the Renaissance and Marius the Epicurean ), both of whom were concerned with the pursuit of beauty and the rejection of Victorian aesthetics. Ruskin taught that Beauty was essential for uplifting the masses in an era obsessed with progress and prosperity, and that great art was no longer possible in England because the country had grown materialistic and unjust; Pater, on the other hand, building upon the French poet Gautier's idea of "art for art's sake," taught that Victorian art was terrible because it was too utilitarian (aiming at moral improvement rather than Beauty), and that one's highest duty is always to live life as fully as possible by constantly seeking out new sensations. Wilde, by temperament a libertine but by upbringing a conscientious liberal, would spend the rest of his life struggling to reconcile these conflicting claims of what was known then as "the Aesthetic Movement."

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) , Irish poet and dramatist whose reputation rests on his comic masterpieces Lady Windermere's Fan (1892) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895). Among Wilde's other best-known works are his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) and his fairy tales especially "The Happy Prince." Wilde was born on October 16, 1854 in Dublin to unconventional parents - his mother Lady Jane Francesca Wilde (1820-96), was a poet and journalist. His father was Sir William Wilde, an Irish antiquarian, gifted writer, and specialist in diseases of the eye and ear. Wilde studied at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh (1864-71), Trinity College, Dublin (1871-74) and Magdalen College, Oxford (1874-78). In 1878 Wilde received his B.A. and in the same year he moved to London. His lifestyle and humorous wit soon made him the spokesman for Aestheticism, the late 19th century movement in England that advocated art for art's sake. He worked as art reviewer (1881), lectured in the United States and Canada (1882), and lived in Paris (1883). Between the years 1883 and 1884 he lectured in Britain. From the mid-1880s he was a regular contributor for Pall Mall Gazette and Dramatic View . In 1884 Wilde married Constance Lloyd (died 1898), and to support his family Wilde edited in 1887-89
