He was finally free, but there was no joy in his heart. He thought there never would be again. Liberated a day earlier by American soldiers, he remembers their rage at what they saw. And even if he lives to be a very old man, he will always be grateful to them for that rage, and also for their compassion. Though he did not understand their language, their eyes told him what he needed to know that they, too, would remember, and bear witness. And now, I stand before you, Mr. President Commander-in-Chief of the army that freed me, and tens of thousands of others and I am filled with a profound and abiding gratitude to the American people. Gratitude is a word that I cherish. Gratitude is what defines the humanity of the human being. And I am grateful to you, Hillary, or Mrs. Clinton, for what you said, and for what you are doing for children in the world, for the homeless, for the victims of injustice, the victims of destiny and society. And I thank all of you for being here.

This special evening celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize with guest of honor Elie Wiesel , the 1986 recipient. In an inspiring interview with Martin Goldsmith , senior commentator on NPR's Performance Today , Dr. Wiesel shares the story of his remarkable life and career, as Holocaust survivor, historian, author, professor, and humanitarian. Ten years after losing his family in Nazi concentration camps, Dr. Wiesel published his first book, Night , and became the literary conscience of the Holocaust. He was subsequently appointed chairman of the President's Commission on the Holocaust. In 1986 he was awarded the Nobel Prize, for teaching people "how not to succumb to despair." Established by the will of Alfred Nobel in 1897, the Nobel Foundation began its annual awards in 1901. The Peace Prize is awarded by a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting. The director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute serves as Secretary to the committee.

Elie Wiesel, author Wiesel said that, although Night is not his only work that deals with his personal experience of the Holocaust, it is by far his "most humiliating." "I got so wrapped up in what I was writing, I couldn't separate myself from the subject matter," said Wiesel, adding that the eight-page account of the train ride from Gleiwitz to Buchenwald could have been trimmed down considerably to focus on the essential events. "I just assumed everything about my life was so fascinating, people would want to read about it. I was so na¯ve." Wiesel went on to criticize Night "I simply seized on this 'dehumanizing people through starvation and fear' angle and beat it into the ground," said Wiesel, who has learned over the years to "show, not tell" in his writing. "Rereading it now is absolute hell."

    ELIE WIESEL, A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
Elie Wiesel was born in 1928 in Sighet, a small village in northern Transylvania, Romania, an area that was part of Hungary from 1941 to 1945. Wiesel was the only son of four children of Shlomo, a grocer and his wife, Sarah (Feig) Wiesel. He was devoted to the study of the Torah, the Talmud and the mystical teachings of Hasidism and the Cabala.
The Nazis, led by Adolf Eichmann, entered Hungary in the spring of 1944 with orders to exterminate an estimated 600,000 Jews in under six weeks. Wiesel was 15 years old when the Nazis deported him and his family to Auschwitz-Birkenau.
His mother and younger sister died in the gas chambers on the night of their arrival at Auschwitz-Birkenau. He and his father were deported to Buchenwald where his father died before the camp was liberated on April 11, 1945. Wiesel did not learn until after the war that his two older sisters, Hilda and Bea, also survived.
After receiving medical treatment, Wiesel went to France with other orphans but he remained stateless. He stayed in France, living first in Normandy and later in Paris working as a tutor and translator. He eventually began writing for various French and Jewish publications. But Wiesel vowed not to write about his experiences at Auschwitz-Birkenau and Buchenwald because he doubted his ability to accurately convey the horror.

Wiesel, 78, whose novels deal with his experience as a Holocaust survivor, said he was grabbed by a stranger in an elevator at the hotel he was staying at for a peace conference and ordered to follow at the risk of violence.
In response, Wiesel called for help and the man fled.
Advertisement Police asked Wiesel to keep the event under wraps until progress was made in the investigation.
According to San Francisco Police Sgt. Neville Gittens, a man approached Wiesel in an elevator and requested an interview with the author on the evening of February 1 at the Argent Hotel.
