Literature, North American Mennonite (1950-1985)
This article on Mennonite literature (fiction or creative writing) will focus on Canadian and American writers, ca. 1950-1985, as Mennonites in these countries have been leading in this endeavor since the articles on literature appeared in Mennonite Encylopedia , vol. 3. Only the most important authors will be mentioned by name and only representative titles of their works will be included. For a more complete list of references the reader is referred to the bibliography. Canadian Mennonite creative writing owes much to the storytellers and poets who came to Canada from Russia in the 1920s. These writers prepared the literary soil among Mennonites by writing and publishingoften at their own expensetheir novels, plays, and poems, and by educating the Mennonite reading public through the yearbooks and journals. These writers wrote in High (standard) German and in the Low German dialect about the tragic experiences of Mennonites and the loss of their Russian homeland after World War I Arnold Dyck (1889-1970), arguably the greatest Mennonite literary figure writing in German in

CHAPTER ONE Fly, you heathen, he was thinking. Fly low, practise your dips and turns to terrify playing children and grandmothers gaunt in their rocking chairs. Practise your hawk-swoops, so you can gun down some equally godless German or bury a cowering family under the rubble of their home. To get paid for killing. To be trained to kill more efficiently. If you shoot down five Germans you get a medal. If you kill twenty at once, you get a Victoria Cross and the King himself shakes your hand. What will you do when all the Germans have been killed and the only work you know is shooting men? Acclaimed murderers everywhere! They were gone, flying in a tight triangle like ducks going north for nesting. Thom slid to the earth and worked his short crow-bar under the stone which had staggered the plow just before the planes appeared. Loosened, it came easily and he walked across the plowing, holding the heavy stone against his stomach. The heap of rocks along the fence ground together as he dropped it. With the edge of his hand he knocked at the dust on the white-worn front of his overalls.

The ongoing Upper North Side series, in cooperation with the Canadian Consulate, highlights the best of Canadian literature and culture for a New York audience. Tonight at McNally Robinson, two acclaimed authors offer up visions of singular worlds: one fiction, one non-fiction. Rawi Hage fled from Lebanon at age 12; his novel De Niro’s Game tells the story of two friends caught up in Lebanon’s civil war who find different paths of escape. Giller Prize winner Vincent Lam has compared Hage to Hemingway, and the Boston Globe praises his “downpour of hallucinatory imagery: Hollywood noir meets opium dreams in a blasted landscape of war-wasted young lives.” Rudy Wiebe is a two-time Governor-General’s Award winner for fiction; his new memoir, Of This Earth: A Mennonite Boyhood in the Boreal Forest This entry was posted on Tuesday, October 9th, 2007 at 2:53 pm and is filed under

29. Beck, Oct. 99
Essay by Ervin Beck from the Mennonite Quarterly Review.
http://www.goshen.edu/mqr/pastissues/oct99beck.html
October 1999 The Politics of Rudy Wiebe in The Blue Mountains of China ERVIN BECK* Abstract : Although Rudy Wiebe's novel The Blue Mountains of China was published in 1970, two years before John Howard Yoder's The Politics of Jesus , the novel reflects many elements of Yoder's political ethics. The influence of Yoder upon Wiebe was direct, both through Yoder's essay "The Original Revolution" and through the friendship that developed between the two men from 1963 to 1967, when Wiebe taught at Goshen College. John Reimer-who bears traits of both Yoder and Wiebe-is the main voice for Yoderian ideas in the novel and, indeed, was created as a unifying device by Wiebe as his direct response to "The Original Revolution." This essay discusses four concerns of Yoder that are also present in Wiebe's novel: the nature of the church, strategy and revelation, effectiveness and faithfulness, and the outcome of history. From 1963 to 1967 a friendship developed between novelist Rudy Wiebe and theologian John Howard Yoder, when Wiebe taught English at Goshen College and Yoder taught at the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries and worked for the Mennonite Board of Missions, both in Elkhart, Indiana. After Wiebe moved back to Canada, their friendship was nurtured mainly by correspondence that continued until just before Yoder's death in 1997.

by noted Canadian author Rudy Wiebe. Wiebe will be at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) on Friday, April 21, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for Of This Earth: Rudy Wiebe on writing, faith and a Mennonite Boyhood in Saskatchewan. In the book, Wiebe writes about growing up in the mid-1930s to late 1940s in Speedwell, Saskatchewan, a pioneer community of about 200 Mennonite homesteaders who came to Canada as refugees from the former Soviet Union. Peace Shall Destroy Many , was the first English-language novel about Mennonites in Canada. Published in 1962, the book dealt frankly with themes of violence, conflict and pacifism in a fictitious western Canadian Mennonite community; it was considered quite controversial by many Mennonites at the time. The vast and lonely frontier of northern Canada and Alaska has always seemed to justify all kinds of strange and unusual tales. Certainly the far northern wilder ness is an eldritch land, full of color and violence, and its very remoteness and harshness sometimes bring out the in, human as well as the superhuman in its denizens.
One of the Yukon's enduring tales is the real-life saga of the Mad Trapper of Rat River, whose name might or might not have been Albert Johnson. Much of the story has already morphed into folklore and urban legend, but the bare facts are remarkable enough. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police approached a heavily fortified cabin in the winter of 1932, and tried to arrest a lone-wolf trapper accused of pilfering a homesteader's traplines. Johnson shot and killed one of the Mounties and then led a posse on a 150-mile chase across the Richardson Mountains, above the Arctic Circle Arctic Circle
