Wiebe was born at Speedwell, near Fairholme, Saskatchewan in what would later become his family’s chicken barn. For thirteen years he lived in an isolated community of about 250 people, as part of the last generation of homesteaders to settle the Canadian west. He did not speak English until age six since Mennonites customarily speak Plautdietsch (Low German) at home and standard German at Church. He attended the small school three miles from his farm and the Speedwell Mennonite Brethren Church He received his B.A. in and then studied under a Rotary International Fellowship at the University of T¼bingen in West Germany , near Stuttgart . In he married Tena Isaak; they now have three children. In Germany, he studied literature and theology and traveled to England Austria Switzerland and Italy Wiebe taught at Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana

Stolen Life: The Journey of a Cree Woman , co-authored with Yvonne Johnson, was featured in his last WordFest appearance. He has won many awards, including two Governor General’s Awards, and is an Officer of the Order of Canada.     Wiebe studierte an der Universit¤t von Alberta in Edmonton zun¤chst Medizin und dann englische Literatur und Creative Writing. Seine Masters These erschien 1962 w¤hrend er Herausgeber einer mennonitischen Wochenzeitschrift war und beschreibt kritisch das Leben einer fiktiven Mennonitengemeinde. 1963 bis 1967 lehrte er am Goshen College in Indiana, sp¤ter wurde er Professor f¼r englische Literatur an der Universit¤t von Edmonton. Wiebe wohnt in Kanada und schreibt Romane Erz¤hlungen und Gedichte Seine Erz¤hlungen und Romane handeln haupts¤chlich von mennonitischer und von kanadischer Geschichte. Rudy Wiebe Rudy Wiebe was born in 1934 near Fairholme, Saskatchewan. Rudy has a B.A. in English and M.A. in Creative Writing, both from the University of Alberta. He studied under a Rotary International Fellowship at the University of Tubingen in West Germany, and in 1962 he received a Bachelor of Theology degree from the Mennonite Brethren Bible College. In 1962-1963 he was editor of the Mennonite Brethren Herald , a position which he resigned because of the controversy over his first novel, Peace Shall Destroy Many . From 1967 to 1992 he was Professor of Creative Writing and English at the University of Alberta. Wiebe has published twenty-five books, including nine novels and the non-fiction best-seller Stolen Life: The Journey of a Cree Woman The Temptations of Big Bear in 1973, and again in 1994 for A Discovery of Strangers

    INTRODUCTION
    Wiebe has been hailed as among Canada's most visionary writers. His works typically explore his personal religious beliefs, aspects of modern society, and the traditional values and character of modern Canada. He is best known for his historical fiction, notably for his award-winning The Temptations of Big Bear (1973). Recognized for the forceful style employed in his novels and short stories, Wiebe has received both the Governor General's Award and the Lorne Piece Medal, both among the most prestigious literary awards in Canada.
    Biographical Information
    Wiebe was born to a Mennonite family in Speedwell, northern Saskatchewan in 1934. His parents had moved to Canada from the Soviet Union in 1930, and their story as well as that of other Mennonite immigrants in the area inspired Wiebe's novel
