Books The Skystone Jack Whyte The Skystone Jack Whyte Written by Mike Noel Wednesday, 24 November 2004 The Roman Empire began around 750 BC and lasted until 476 AD. The decline of the Empire took over 100 years. Slowly Rome found itself unable to maintain the mammoth political structure it had built. The Skystone is a historical novel set at the time when the Roman Empire's influence in the West is waning. In the midst of the dying Empire a new empire was born. That was the empire ruled by Arthur.
The Skystone is the first book in the Camulod series. Even though it is meant to lay the groundwork for much of the Arthurian legend, this book deals only peripherally with any of the common aspects of that legend (Arthur, Merlin, Excalibur, Camelot, etc.). Instead, Whyte is focused on building the historical setting that Arthur emerges from. The main character is a Roman soldier named Publius Varrus. At the apex of his military career Varrus is badly injured. Although the wounds heal his career as a fighting soldier is over. Instead Varrus joins a one of his officers, Caius Britanicus, in a remote part of the western Roman Empire the region we now know as England.

Jack Whyte's talk was great....
I went to the main branch of the Edmonton, Alberta public library this past Tuesday to see Jack Whyte of “Dream of Eagles” fame and hear him talk about his new book, the last of the King Arthur saga, “The Eagle.” He gave some background about the entire project for those who may have not been familiar and then read for about 30 minutes from the early part of the book when Lancelot has returned from his excursion to the north where he met Morgas and tries to remember everything from his interrogation by her to relate to Merlyn. He then spent about 20 minutes answering questions and for those who don’t have a Scottish background, the character, Donuil’s name is merely pronounced Don-el, not my convoluted Don- u – il. He also mentioned that one of the shipboard character in the MacAthol clans name is the Scottish version of Charles or Charlies. His new project is one down and two to go, having finished the first of the Knights Templar series a day or so earlier in Calgary. Unfortunately the publishing process means it won’t be in bookstores until

The Skystone (Jack Whyte)
ISBN: 0812551389
I believe I first got tipped off about this series by reading a rave on Orson Scott Card's blog. I'm glad I followed up on it.
The Skystone is the first volume of many in a retelling of the legend of King Arthur and Camelot (according to the reviews and the cover blurb). You wouldn't know it from reading the story (until you start getting clues in the latter half of the book). This story is set years before Arthur, when Britain was still under the rule of Rome and the Roman legions. It follows Plublius Varrus, one of those Roman soldiers, through well-staged bloody battles, intriguing political feuds and troubling personal demons. This is quite an adventure.
I found the writing and plotting to be first-rate overall. I read the book straight through in a week (it helped to be sitting in airports and on planes). A few things keep me from giving it a full four stars: (1) Secondary characters seem to be either fully trustworthy and noble or not. It's way too easy to identify allies and enemies. Where are the turncoats? (2) Life in ancient Britain comes across as a bit too idyllic. Although some difficulties are described, the author glosses over many of the harsh realities of everyday life in this period. (3) Typical of most secular books, the Christian themes are very muted and easily confused with simple morality.
I will definitely find and read the rest of the books in this series.

In 1187 one of the few survivors of the Battle of Hattin, young Scots Templar Alexander Sinclair, escapes into the desert despite his wounds. Sinclair has learned about the execution of the surviving Templars after the battle, so when he is rescued, he says nothing of his own standing among the Order of the Temple. Sinclair is one of the Inner Sanctum of the Order-a member of the ancient Brotherhood of Sion, a secret society within the secret society. Two years after the battle, Sir Henry St. Clair is awakened after midnight by a visit from his liege lord, Richard the Lionheart. King Richard is assembling an army to free the Holy Land from the grip of Saladin and his Saracens, and he wants Sir Henry, his first and favorite teacher, to sail with him as his master-atarms. The old man is unwilling to go-he neither likes nor trusts Richard, having found him both a sadist and an egomaniac. But his future, and that of his young son AndrŽ, a rising knight in the order, depends on his allegiance to Richard. Sir Henry knows that AndrŽ worships his older cousin, Alexander Sinclair of the Scottish branch of their family, who has been in the Holy Land for years. Alexander will be an ally in an unfamiliar land. Sir Henry agrees to go despite serious misgivings about Richard, and his motives for war.

Title: The Skystone Author: Jack Whyte Genre: Fantasy Summary: The Roman world has expanded farther than its leaders can retain control over. A new world is formed on the Isle of Britian and traced through the lives of two former Roman soldiers. The Take-Away: I followed the recomendation of Word Nerd and picked up the first title in the Camulod Chronicles. The basic premise of the Arthur legends begins in this novel. The references to Arthur and his tragic story are subtle and worked into a realistic story. I'm very interested in seeing how the series develops since the story thus far focuses on the history of England and the people that shape it after the demise of the Roman Empire. Recommendation: Read it, but don't expect any sort of typical Arthur story. Posted by slpenney at Labels: Bookworm

of the British Isles find more in common with the natives than with their "Italian" roots. The major threat is the northern Celtic contingency. The traditional Roman fighting techniques are no match for the guerilla tactics of these wild men, so the Brits and Romans work together to invent military strategies more conducive to the land: training combat troops differently, breeding larger horses, fashioning more efficient and deadly swords. They also overcome their differences by uniting the two different cultures through marriage, which has been facilitated through true love. Strangely, this work has the tone of a factual historical novel rather than a legendary conjecture. The storytelling seems to be less important than the "facts." As such, it is less compelling than expected. There is too much explanation and not enough drama. Still, the idea of Arthur's forefathers is inherently intriguing. Marginal. Dr. Lesley S.J.
