Jump to: navigation search Jack Whyte Johnstone Renfrewshire Scotland ) is an author and writer born and raised in Scotland , but living in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada since Whyte's major work to date is the A Dream of Eagles series (as it is titled in Canada, but known as The Camulod Chronicles in the United States and elsewhere). This series of historical novels presents the tale of King Arthur set against the backdrop of Roman Britain . This retelling of the popular legend eschews the use of magic (as in T. H. White ’s The Sword in the Stone ) to explain Arthur’s ascent to power and instead relies on the historical condition (with some artistic license) of post-Roman Britain to support the theory that Arthur was meant to counter the anarchy left by the Roman departure from Britain in AD and the subsequent colonization and invasion of Britain by various peoples from Northwestern Europe, including the Saxons Jutes Franks , and Angles ). Whyte incorporates both traditional Arthurian names, places and events (albeit in gaelic or latin form) as well as the names of various historical figures that have been suggested as being the possible basis for the original King Arthur legend. The tacit implication is that Whyte's version of history is the true story that has become distorted over time to become the legend and stories of magic that we know today. Jack Whyte served as the official bard of The Calgary Highlanders and performed several tracks of poetry and song on the 1990 album

Publius Varrus and Caius Britannicus are two Romans who choose to stay, choose to fight for their adopted land. They will build a hill-top fort that will withstand the onslaughts of the barbarians who seek to plunder Britain's wealth. Out of their struggles a new Britain and a new people will emergeBritons who are a carefully crafted alloy, a tempered fusion of Roman and Celtic greatness. And one thing more... These two men are great-grandfathers to the man known as Arthur, King of the Britons, and their actions will help shape a nation...and forge the sword known as Excalibur.

Taken from his memoirs
Jack was born in Dundee on 1st April 1922 and sadly his mother died aged 31 when he was just a young child. Jack and his father went to live with his Granny in a cramped flat with only two bedrooms. He attended Dudhope Road School and Blairgowrie High School.
When he left school at 14, there were not many jobs, but he managed to get a job working for the National Census.
Some time later, Jack saw an advert in a newspaper stating that the Countess of Airlie was prepared to sponsor boys in poor circumstances who wanted to go to sea. She would pay for their training at the Mercantile Marine School in London. A letter was written and after medical tests, was accepted. Jack jumped at the chance to see the world so thus became a new entrant at the Prince of Wales Hostel for Boys, Limehouse (which was later changed to Sea School).
The first ship Jack was assigned to was The Orion, a Royal Mail Steamer docked at Tilbury. In 1939 he didn't feel he was getting enough experience as an Ordinary Seaman, so he joined the Cunard White Star Line, sailing on the Ausonia for Montreal, Canada.
When he returned to London after just one trip, he signed on the Orion. When he signed off again, he stayed at the Sailors Hostel, Salmon Lane, Stepney, which had special cabins for ex. Prince of Wales boys.

Many people might have noticed that I have a very strong desire to support my local authors. I don't even remember where this book came from, judging by the shape I would think a yard sale or flea market. It has been in the to be read pile for a while. I think I thought there was no possible way that I could buy one random book by him and have it be book 1, but low and behold, my one random book is book 1.

Jack Whyte on Writing Clothar the Frank Jack's Blog Jack Whyte on Writing
Jack Whyte is often asked about the secrets of his success. What motivates him to write? How does he write? What's his advice to budding novelists? On the release of his newest saga, Clothar the Frank , Whyte reflects on the writing life in a guest column below. I write every day, without fail. I may write only a few paragraphs, perhaps a page or two, on any one particular day, and none of what I write has anything to do with the fiction I generate for a livelihood. But I do write every single day, and I do it with an ease and fluency for which I am extremely grateful. I write letters and I write journal entries and, nowadays, I even keep a web log web site . Then, too, I sometimes write poetry, some of it abstract, but most of it narrative verse, that is intricately and formally structured and anything but abstract. Words, words, words, words, words: my stock in trade. I probably write, process and generate between five and ten thousand words every day. And yet, when people ask me how I write, I have to stop and think about it, because I don't really know the answer. And when people ask me for advice on how to write, and sometimes even on what to write, I hesitate and hum and haw because I feel genuinely unqualified to advise anyone on any of those things. The "how to" part of writing is something I simply never think about; it's just something I do because I have to. There's no choice involved, no alternative option. I am a writer and I always have been, and so I write about whatever happens to be uppermost in my thoughts at that time.

"If anyone would have told me in 1977 that in the year 2000 23 years later I would still be telling the same story and would have already written five novels and have another one out and two more in the pot, first of all I wouldn't have believed them. And, second of all, I would have run away: I would have never started." We're sitting in the bar in a very good hotel. It's mid afternoon and the place is half empty. Half full if you happen to be an optimist. Nearby a piano is playing softly and the few patrons are chatting quietly, sipping overpriced drinks, enjoying the overstuffed chairs and mostly ignoring the wait staff whose steps are never heard on the well carpeted floors. I ask Jack Whyte a couple of questions about his work and little else is required of me. In fact, after a while, I'm not even there anymore. I am transported, by and with him, to the fifth century where legends spring to eternal life and swords in stones are merely sophisticated sleights of hand in an unsophisticated world. "So imagine 7000 people sitting there," says Jack Whyte in a gentle Scottish burr that has been softened by three decades of living in North America. "You see the table with a purple apron around it concealing it. And, in the back is the cross, where they expect to see the cross. This is Good Friday. And church is in the morning. Into this convocation come all the bishops of Britain and there was a lot of them and they bring forward this young man Arthur who has developed a new mobile force the like of which has never been seen in Camelot."

For over the past decade, Jack Whyte has been an author with a mission. A bona fide King Arthur buff, he set out to explain the central mystery of the legend the sword in the stone and succeeded. Yet, five large novels later, some questions still remained. Fans wanted to know more about King Arthur's background. To address these issues, Whyte wrote Uther (Penguin/Viking; hardcover; $32.99; ISBN 0-670-871621), another large novel with a lot of adventure and historical research. A stand-alone volume, Whyte addresses the world beyond Camelod and explores how Uther, King Artur's father, wooed the wife of his worst enemy. Whyte was born in Scotland and has lived in Canada since 1967, working as an actor, musician, advertising executive, and, of course, a writer.
