A sickly child (suffering from asthma), he was educated in Australia and, from the age of 13, at an English public school. After completing his schooling, he worked for two years as a jackeroo on his parents' property. He returned to England in 1932 to attend Cambridge University where he studied French and German literature. During the Second World War he served as an intelligence officer with the RAF in Greece and the Middle East. After the War, he returned to Australia in 1948 with a Greek friend, Manoly Lascaris, with whom he set up house at Castle Hill - then on the outskirts of Sydney - where they grew and sold vegetables, flowers and milk. His first novels, which were published during the War, received literary acclaim but it was after he returned to Australia that Patrick White produced his greatest works including The Tree of Man, a long family saga which has been compared to the works of Thomas Hardy and Leo Tolsoy, Voss , which is the epic story of a doomed attempt to cross the Australian continent in 1845, and Riders in the Chariot , set in the imaginary town of Sasparilla which became the setting of several of White's novels and short stories Both Voss and Riders in the Chariot received the Miles Franklin Award.

Australian writer. As a youth White moved between Australia and England, where he attended Cambridge University. After serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II, he returned to Australia, which he saw as a country in a volatile process of growth and self-definition. His somewhat misanthropic novels often explore the possibilities of savagery in that context; they include The Tree of Man Voss Riders in the Chariot (1961), and The Twyborn Affair (1979). His other works include plays and short stories, the latter collected in The Burnt Ones (1964) and The Cockatoos (1974). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973. document.writeln(AAMB2); Images and Media: More on "Patrick White" from the 32 Volume White, Patrick - Australian novelist and playwright who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973. Patrick (Victor Martindale) White (1912-1990) Australian novelist, short story writer, and playwright, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973. White's international breakthrough novel was VOSS (1957), a symbolic story of a doomed journey into the Australian desert. RIDERS IN THE CHARIOT (1961) was set in the imaginary Sydney suburban town, Sarsaparilla, White's Yoknapatawpha . These works established him as one of the most important modern writers. In his own country White had to wait a long time before his unadorning picture of the Australian middle class was accepted. "I would like to believe in the myth that we grow wiser with age. In a sense my disbelief is wisdom. Those of a middle generation, if charitable or sentimental, subscribe to the wisdom myth, while the callous see us as dispensable objects, like broken furniture or dead flowers. For the young we scarcely exist unless we are unavoidable members of the same family, farting, slobbering, perpetually mislaying teeth and bifocals." (from Three Uneasy Pieces Patrick Victor Martindale White was born in Knightsbridge, London of Australian parents. The early years of his life White spend in Australia, where his father, Victor Martindale, owned a large sheep farm. Already in his childhood, White showed interest in writing, and at the age of nine his first piece, written under the pseudonym 'Red Admiral', was published in the children's page of the Sydney

Autobiography
In fact I enjoyed every minute of my life at King's, especially the discovery of French and German literature. Each vacation I visited either France or Germany to improve my languages. I wrote fitfully, bad plays, worse poetry. Then, after taking my degree, the decision had to be made: what to do? It was embarrassing to announce that I meant to stay in London and become a writer when I had next to nothing to show. To my surprise, my bewildered father, who read little beyond newspapers and stud-books, and to whom I could never say a word if we found ourselves stranded alone in a room, agreed to let me have a small allowance on which to live while trying to write.
At this period of my life I was in love with the theatre and was in and out of it three or four nights of the week. I tried unsuccessfully to get work behind the scenes. I continued writing the bad plays which fortunately nobody would produce, just as no one did me the unkindness of publishing my early novels. A few sketches and lyrics appeared in topical revues, a few poems were printed in literary magazines. Then, early in 1939, a novel I had managed to finish, called Happy Valley , was published in London, due to the fact that Geoffrey Grigson, the poet, then editor of the magazine New Verse which had accepted one of my poems, was also reader for a publishing firm. This novel, although derivative and in many ways inconsiderably, was received well enough by the critics to make me feel I had become a writer. I left for New York expecting to repeat my success, only to be turned down by almost every publisher in that city, till the Viking Press, my American publishers of a lifetime, thought of taking me on.
