); the ultra-libidinous, ultra-liberated gay cruiser ( The Beautiful Room Is Empty, The Joy of Gay Sex ); the erudite man of letters, as comfortable in Europe as America ( Jean Genet; Fanny: A Fiction ); and also the clear-eyed and stricken chronicler of the devastation of the AIDS crisis ( The Farewell Symphony; The Married Man ). His latest book, My Lives: An Autobiography, investigates all of these identities, casting new light on his seventeen previous books and also marking a vital new turn in his career. The power of My Lives I sat down with White in his Chelsea apartment to talk about the book. My laptop recording device immediately went on the fritz, but, fortunately for posterity, White was kind enough to dig out his own mini-cassette recorder and some spare batteries, and so we began.
Why arrange My Lives by subject rather than chronologically? I guess because I had written about that in my fictional trilogy, plus

Why did Edmund White write this?
Extraordinary Writing and Subject Nifty similes but not very interesting
O.k., thus the maintained author is a deviating old woman in its 70s, but that means it that you carry with this schlaengelnden representation wish. There not much is to pull to you through overwhelming Idole with feet of the loam? Yawn. Zwickel Vidal is as much satisfyingly acid. Interest in any of the letters? Not much. Fanny T. escapes, which small danger is it inside during a short chapter. Long sludgy pulling is not worth to descriptions of the white of the letters, which are amazingly populate, but it to arrive at to it. I am vernarrt in something of other work of the white and therefore disappointed in the morning in this. Fanny Wright, "a blazing, ten log fire sans firescreen." Unexpected, yet flawless Jolly, quirky historical fiction

Sunday Book Review
'My Lives,' by Edmund White
The Bearable Lightness of Being

Review by LAURA MILLER Published: April 9, 2006 SINCE Edmund White's new autobiography refrains from explaining itself, we can only guess at its intentions. "My Lives" is organized not chronologically but thematically, with chapters entitled "My Shrinks," "My Blonds," "My Hustlers" and so on, ranging loosely over categories of the author's experience. Perhaps White, who is celebrated for a series of autobiographical novels about middle-class gay life beginning with "A Boy's Own Story," feels that he's already related his life once in the usual sequence and the second time around merits a fresh approach. To cite "A Boy's Own Story" alone, the correspondence between White's life and his novels is quite close, down to the name of his father's dog and the brandy Alexanders one of his mother's boyfriends serves her in bed.

O'Connor, Flannery. Wise Blood . New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1952.
I like Flannery O'Connor, but I don't love her. This is a problem, I know, because if one reads half as obsessively as I do the words of other writers about how goes about writing fiction, one comes across Flannery's name and maxims at just about every turn. She is, without question, a genius, goes the belief. And maybe she is. She knows her way around a simile: "The little boys' faces were like pans set on either side to catch the grins that overflowed from her." She's also great at understated humor, most of it unquotable because it's so grounded in context, but here's one: "He was smiling. He looked like a friendly hound dog with light mange."
But whenever I read O'Connor all I can see behind her humor is meanness. O'Connor is not a writer who loves her characters. Granted, I've read maybe three stories and one of her two novels, but in each of them we're not meant to like anybody the way other writers invite us to. We don't like Hulga. We don't like Manley Pointer. We don't really like the Misfit and we sure as hell don't like the old woman he shoots dead. Or, rather, we
