The Rise of Realism: 1860-1914: Edith Wharton (1862-1937)
Index Like James , Edith Wharton grew up partly in Europe and eventually made her home there. She was descended from a wealthy, established family in New York society and saw firsthand the decline of this cultivated group and, in her view, the rise of boorish, nouveau-riche business families. This social transformation is the background of many of her novels. Like James, Wharton contrasts Americans and Europeans. The core of her concern is the gulf separating social reality and the inner self. Often a sensitive character feels trapped by unfeeling characters or social forces. Edith Wharton had personally experienced such entrapment as a young writer suffering a long nervous breakdown partly due to the conflict in roles between writer and wife. Wharton's best novels include The House of Mirth The Custom of the Country Summer The Age of Innocence (1920), and the beautifully crafted novella

Sunday Book Review
Portrait of a Lady

By CLAIRE MESSUD Published: April 29, 2007 In her short story "The Fullness of Life," Edith Wharton wrote that a woman's life is like "a great house full of rooms," most of which remain unseen: "and in the innermost room, the holy of holies, the soul sits alone and waits for a footstep that never comes." In spite of the many books written about Wharton and her work — including R. W. B. Lewis's Pulitzer Prize -winning 1975 biography — it is Hermione Lee's determination to provide an unprecedented tour of all the rooms in Edith Wharton's mansion. The text is unquestionably authoritative, impressively — indeed, almost alarmingly — exhaustive (it includes lists of Wharton's neighbors, of fellow hotel guests, of the ads surrounding her published stories, of the wines in her cellars); and it seeks, with meticulous care, to approach the soul in her innermost sanctum. Edith Wharton The Age of Innocence The Age of Innocence - Study Guide The Moving Finger Introduction "She sang, of course, ' M'ama ' and not 'he loves me', since an unalterable and unquestioned law of the musical world requires that the German text of French operas sung by Swedish artists should be translated into Italian for the clearer understanding of English-speaking audiences" ( The Age of Innocence Edith Wharton was born Edith Newbold Jones in New York, 1862. Coming from a distinguished family of substantial wealth, she was educated privately at home and also while travelling in Europe. Her marriage to Edward Robbins Wharton was one filled with unhappiness and difficulties resulting from the writer's nervous illnesses and her husband's problems with his mental state. They had married in 1885 and would move to France in 1907, divorcing in 1913. In between, Wharton had begun to engage in social functions, meeting such literary accolytes as Henry James with whom she struck up a good friendship. When Wharton wrote to him explaining the sorrow of her marriage, James replied to her, "Keep making the movements of life". Her literary career also begun. In fact it began early, with her verses recommended to Atlantic by Longfellow himself. Around 1890 she published a number of short stories and poems in

The Age of Innocence opens nationwide on 18th February (this was written in 1994 - BB) TRIUMPHANT Whatever you think of these "costume dramas" Commitments director Alan Parker recently described them as "the cinematic equivalent of Laura Ashley " there’s no denying their makers’ impeccable literary taste. Forster and Waugh have never been out of fashion, but the triumphant transfer to the screen of novels like Howards End and Brideshead Revisited has only boosted their already considerable readerships. The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth Ethan Frome, and a dozen or so of her stories, as well as the two books mentioned above ranks with the very best American fiction, and I suspect that reluctant admirers of Henry James - those who love Daisy Miller and The Portrait of the Lady , but find his later writings a little too tortuous for comfort - will be pleasantly surprised by her. assembled by Jone Johnson Lewis Life is either always a tight-rope or a feather bed. Give me the tight-rope. It was harder to drown at sunrise than in darkness. She was not accustomed to taste the joys of solitude except in company. Life is the only real counselor; wisdom unfiltered through personal experience does not become a part of the moral tissue. If only we'd stop trying to be happy, we could have a pretty good time. There is no such thing as old age, there is only sorrow. It is almost as stupid to let your clothes betray that you know you are ugly as to have them proclaim that you think you are beautiful.
