On the release of Overtime: Selected Poems Reclaiming San Francisco Panegyric by Guy Debord). We met at the Muni underground Castro Street station the day before the Gay Pride Festival which was already pulsing with pre-party partying. Our project is Golden Gate , a revised expanded version of San Francisco Poets PW: And, what happened next was that my friend, Richard Anderson, had been practicing law in Newport, Oregon, and suddenly the new governor, the first Democratic governor in a long time, appointed him to the circuit court bench. He was going to have to run for the office in the next election, which was the following year, and he asked me to come up and help with all that and do publicity and his paper stuff and travel around and meet all the local yokels, and talk to them 'cause they wanted to look at him. Apparently he impressed them because he won the election. Anyway, that was about 1957, and around 1959 LeRoi Jones wanted me to give him a book manuscript, so I sent him off the book that became

  • Philip Whalen 1923–
American poet and novelist. Best known as a poet, Whalen has been praised for his skill at conveying emotion through evocative language. Much of the emotional impact of Whalen's verse results from his use of free association, a technique which developed out of his relationship with the group of San Francisco-based avant-garde writers known as the Beats. A strong literary force during the 1950s, the Beats were united by various interests: unconventional poetic form, altered consciousness through the use of hallucinogens, sexual freedom, Eastern philosophy, and antiestablishment politics. Whalen's informal grammar and syntax, irreverent wit, and his belief in Zen philosophy both represented and reinforced the group's style and beliefs. Whalen became a Zen monk in 1972. Whalen's most noted poetry collection

    A MEMOIR OF PHILIP WHALEN
Earlier in the Interglacial age, there came from the North a Transcendental Triad: Gary Snyder, Lew Welch and Philip Whalen. Whalen is a trickster, and a scholar: his erudition occasionally obscuring his wild sense of humour. Auerhahn Press published his first book, Memoirs of an Interglacial Age , in 1960. In 1969 Hardcore Basement published On Bear's Head , notable at the time because no one could afford it at $18, now recognized as one of the great visionary manuals of the post-War years. Whalen, meanwhile, vamoosed to Japan. Becoming a Zen priest he forsook hirsute woodsiness for glabrous spirituality. A quasi-autobiographical trilogy appeared, naturally enough, in three novels, You didn't Even Try (Coyote, 1967), Imaginary Speeches for a Brazen head (Black Sparrow, 1972) and The Diamond Noodle (Poltroon, 1980). He is also the author of Enough Said (Grey Fox) and a cassette (Ubik Sound). He continues to be the most delightful and original poet of the Interglacial epoch, and, as our favourite ad-man Lew Welch said: "He cuts through grease, faster," Please welcome Philip Whalen.
That was the introduction I made to a Whalen reading at Cody's about 1980. I drew my portrait of him above at that time. To it I must add my perpetual delight in hearing Phil read his work. His voices are a chorus of characters bickering inside his cranium, though each gets his or her moment in the mouthpiece.

    Abstract
    Biography
Donald Allen, one of the most influential editors and publishers of contemporary American literature, was born in Iowa in 1912. During the Second World War he was a Japanese translator, and then became an editor at Grove Press, where he stayed for sixteen years. Allen has devoted his career to making innovative writing available to the public. He has edited several important anthologies of contemporary American writing and has published the work of many important poets through his two presses. Allen's editorial career began in the mid fifties when he accepted a position with Grove Press. One of his early projects was a collection of work by Brother Antoninus (William Everson), Robert Duncan, Kenneth Rexroth, Gary Snyder, Jack Spicer, and other poets of the San Francisco Renaissance, for an issue of Grove's EVERGREEN REVIEW (1957). He also aided in editing EYE OF MEXICO, an Evergreen issue devoted to contemporary Mexican writing and culture. During these first years at Grove Allen translated several of Eugene Ionesco's theatre works, including THE BALD SOPRANO (Grove, 1958), and edited books by Jack Kerouac, John Rechy, Lysander Kemp, and others. In 1958, Allen began work on his most important project at Grove, THE NEW AMERICAN POETRY anthology. Following the Pound/Williams tradition, Allen hoped to present the range of experimental writing produced in the United States since the Second World War. The project took two years to complete and required extensive correspondence with poets, editors, and literary agents. Finally published in 1960, the anthology chronicled the emergence of the Beat, Black Mountain, and New York schools of poetry. It also increased recognition for such poets as Robert Duncan, Robert Creeley, Denise Levertov, Paul Blackburn, and Charles Olson. Allen originally planned to publish revised anthologies every two or three years. However, he produced only two such books over the next twenty years: NEW AMERICAN WRITING (Penguin, 1965), and THE POSTMODERNS (Grove, 1965).

    The Philip Whalen Archive
The Bancroft Library has acquired the archive of the poet Philip Whalen, who was on the stage with Allen Ginsberg at the Six Gallery in San Francisco that September night in 1955 when the public first heard the poem "Howl" read aloud, the night the Beat Generation was launched. The Six Gallery, in the Marina district, had been converted from an auto repair garage to an art space less than a year before, and in that time had hung a number of group and one-artist exhibitions. It had also hosted performances, including a reading of Robert Duncan's verse play Faust Foutu On Bear's Head (Harcourt, 1969) and most recently, Overtime (Penguin, 1999). Whalen is arguably the most underappreciated of the Beat writers, in part because his Buddhism has kept him out of the public eye as a personality, and in part because his poems at first seem less user-friendly than those of the other Beats. Whalen's poems are far less discursive or narrative than Ginsberg's, and far less lyrical than Snyder's short poems. They also range more widely in their reference than most Beat poetry. Typically, a lengthy Whalen poem can refer in a casual, often playful way to pre-Socratic Greek philosophers, figures from Hindu mythology and Buddhist lore, sports, events from European or American history, TV programs, popular songs, science, Japanese and Chinese artists, even quotations from teen-agers walking down the street, and more.
