REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL West, Nathanael West, Nathanael (1903-1940), was an American novelist noted for a brilliant but bitter view of modern American life. He published only four short novels before he was killed in an automobile accident on Dec. 22, 1940. All of West's fiction should be considered "experimental." Miss Lonelyhearts (1933) is a grim satire about a newspaperman who is assigned to write a column advising people on their problems. The Day of the Locust (1939) is a fantastic and sometimes nightmarish satire of life in Hollywood, where West wrote screenplays.

Encyclopedia Article Find in this article View printer-friendly page E-mail West, Nathanael , pseudonym of Nathan Wallenstein Weinstein (1903-1940), American novelist, born in New York and educated at Brown University. His first novel, The Dream Life of Balso Snell (1931), the story of a group of odd characters inside the Trojan horse, was not successful. Miss Lonelyhearts (1933), his best-known book, tells of the confrontations between a bitter male advice-to-the-lovelorn columnist and his correspondents. It was followed by A Cool Million (1934), a satire of the moralistic rags-to-riches sagas popularized in the 1890s by Horatio Alger . His last novel, The Day of the Locust (1939), savagely depicts a gallery of grotesques in Hollywood, where West worked as a screenwriter, and is considered by many to be the best novel written about Hollywood.

    The Day of the Locust
Thursday, 22 March 2007 @ 22:54 by Nathanael West (1939) Set in Hollywood in the era of the Great Depression, The Day of the Locust is a short but painful satire of the visions of American disillusioned dreams and fantasy factory. Todd Hackett, a talented set-designer, drifts through a city deliberately reduced to its most base depiction of failed dreams and false glitters, peopled with characters plucked out straight from tabloids and noir-ish B-grade movies Permalink West, Nathanael America fiction

  • West, Nathanael ), pseudonym of Nathan Wallenstein Weinstein , New York author who, after graduation from Brown University (1924) and two years in Paris, returned to his native city to begin writing his bitter, macabre fiction, which attracted little notice in his time but great recognition from critics after his death. His first works were The Dream Life of Balso Snell (1931), a scatological fantasy dwelling on human corruption; Miss Lonelyhearts (1933), a sad and bitter satire of a newspaperman enmeshed in the lives of the writers to his lovelorn column; and A Cool Million (1934), a fantastic travesty and savage attack on the Horatio Alger theme. Script writing in Hollywood gave West a sense of that community and business that led to his most significant novel, The Day of the Locust (1939), a grotesque depiction in surrealist style of the sham of the city and the...
