An Interview with Irvine Welsh
Trainspotting, the first novel by Irvine Welsh, became a stage play and then a popular feature film. Since Trainspotting, Welsh has written eight books. The Acid House was also adapted to a film. His books are known for their phonetic Scottish slang that makes us look like goofs when we have to sound out the words out loud at cafes or in parks to understand them. Along with novels, Welsh has written plays, has done some screenwriting, and is a boxer. I hung out with Welsh at a bar in the Upper Haight in San Francisco before he was scheduled to read from his latest book, The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs , at a bookstore across the street. I was writing my first book Trainspotting The Commitments
Do you actively spar with partners? So it helps you drink less, too? It helps me drink less as well, which is a great thing for me. Were you drinking pretty heavily for a while? Do you prefer working with a deadline?

  • Irvine Welsh By Christopher Kemp In 1993, Scottish author Irvine Welsh published "Trainspotting," and changed popular fiction forever. Written in the phonetic Scottish dialect, it told the story of Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud and Renton, four working-class substance abusers living in the government-housing schemes of Edinburgh, Scotland. The life of an Edinburgh "schemie" is a busy one; fights are fought, drinks are downed, pills are popped, speed is snorted and large amounts of heroin are purchased regularly from Mother Superior, a local dealer inventively named for the length of his drug habit. Suddenly, football was "fitba," sexual intercourse was "gittin yer hole" and Irvine Welsh was famous. A film adaptation starring Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle and Johnny Lee Miller became one of the most memorable films of 1996, with ample doses of explicit drug use, inventive and relentless profanity, frantic sex and violence.

    Irvine Welsh
    Ecstasy
    (Jonathan Cape/Random House)
Irvine Welsh's name doesn't seem to be on exactly everybody's lips these days, but chances are if you hang around the trendy places and the self-professed hip for approximately three minutes, you'll likely hear the name of this deeply unpleasant Scottish man. His four books are selling like clappers, his first novel, Trainspotting, has become an international best-selling film, appealing to the kids hungry for another Pulp Fiction. And he's making records with Primal Scream, although chances are they've just found some cheap exoneration of their sickly, drug-addled lifestyles in each other. Welsh's popularity on the North American continent has been a source of perplexity for three years now. His work is so riddled with deep Midlothian accents that, even as a Scot, one could find it laborious at times. At the same time, his work has been panned with malice aforethought by hacks the length and breadth of this continent, whom obviously became incensed and frustrated at their lack of understanding of foreign accents. Having said all that, it's hard not to like Irvine Welsh. His writing is documentary in style, a gritty, low-light photo of a generation of losers who've not a clue where they're going except that it's higher. Ecstasy, is his tip to the rave generation, which he is most certainly not a part of, for he's far too old, and those tight skimpy T-shirts simply were not made for big lads like him. If he was absent from the raves however, he must surely have sat at home and tinkered with the pills, for he takes great pains to describe (and thus glorify) the highs achieved therein. If he was guilty of making heroin highs sound a bit too tasty in Trainspotting, he's really gone over the top with the fashion drug Ecstasy in this book. His drawn out, often chapter-long recountings of the super-euphoric love-thy-neighbour effects of E make it sound like something we should all be having a bash at.

    "Porno" by Irvine Welsh
The "Trainspotting" crew is back in a deft and surprisingly heartbreaking farce about the making of a dirty movie. By Laura Miller Pages 1 In its middle register, "Porno" is an expertly executed ensemble farce about the return of Simon "Sick Boy" Williamson to his hometown of Edinburgh specifically the working-class neighborhood of Leith, where he takes over his aunt's pub and sets several schemes in motion at once. He devotes most of his energy to producing a purportedly "revolutionary" porn movie, starring, among others, himself; his old buddy "Juice" Terry Lawson, a gawky but exceptionally well-endowed local teenager; and Nikki Fuller-Smith, a foxy film student whose sexual bravado conceals a black hole of self-doubt. Eventually, Mark Renton, who ripped off Simon and two of their mates in a drug deal described in "Trainspotting," gets in on the action as well. One of those betrayed mates, the terrifying Frank Begbie, a simmering cauldron of stupid violence, is just out of jail and looking to settle the score with Mark. Welsh's characters are a pack of solipsistic misfits, screw-ups and scammers, forever in pursuit of daft projects and concocting improbable rackets, the intricacies of which Welsh weaves together to hilarious effect. The "Trainspotting" gang may be in their 30s now, but they're reluctant to grow up even as they bang their shins against life's limitations and disappointments. Basically, much of "Porno" is "Seinfeld" in Scotland and on hard drugs and often it's just as funny.

I have to think of a question to ask Irvine Welsh at an event this evening. I've no more than a passing familiarity with the man's work. Any suggestions?
I may not be called upon to ask it, but I would like to be prepared just in case. posted by Optamystic to (11 comments total) 1 user marked this as a favorite "Tell me everything you know about the 39 steps."
(Or, seriously, he was kind of JK Rowling before JK Rowling. You could ask him something about the burden of expectation and whether it affected his output.)

My first thought was asking him about the influence of James Kelman on his work, as I much prefer Kelman. Googling to check that was indeed a recognised influence, it says here he once made a single with Primal Scream. That and his apparent earlier music career make make a good quirky topic.

I got to ask Chuck Palahniuk a question when he was on his Diary promotion tour while I was only familiar with the Fight Club movie. I asked him, "What is the most offensive word you know?". He seemed surprised and amused by it because it wasn't the standard fanboy fare of "what did this scene mean?" or "what was character x thinking of when he did y?". You're welcome to steal it and pass it off as your own if you come back and tell us his answer.

Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose fixed- interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose a three piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing sprit- crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing you last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked-up brats you have spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that?
RENTON: I chose not to choose life: I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who need reasons when you've got heroin?
RENTON: People think it's all about misery and desperation and death and all that shite, which is not to be ignored, but what they forget is the pleasure of it. Otherwise we wouldn't do it. After all, we're not fucking stupid. At least, we're not that fucking stupid. Take the best orgasm you ever had, multiply it by a thousand and you're still nowhere near it. When you're on junk you have only one worry: scoring. When you're off it you are suddenly obliged to worry about all sorts of other shite. Got no money: can't get pished. Got money: drinking too much. Can't get a bird: no chance of a ride. Got a bird: too much hassle. You have to worry about bills, about food, about some football team that never fucking wins, about human relationships and all the things that really don't matter when you've got a sincere and truthful junk habit.
