"Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" by Rebecca Wells is a well written, sometimes moving, sometimes funny, sometimes shocking novel about Southern Women. It covers five decades through the use of flashbacks and tells the story of four friends and their offspring. The central character, Vivi Abbott Walker, is a steel magnolia type character, who, having lost the love of her life marries another man and has children, but never fully recovers from the loss. Her daughter, Sidda, never really believes her mother loves her. After Sidda inadvertently gives information about her mother to a reporter that describes Vivi in a bad light, the mother stops talking to the daughter and her three life long friends, the Ya-Yas, come to the rescue by filling in the missing pieces for Sidda.
It deals with issues such as incest, alcoholism, child abuse and tolerance. Some of it is laugh out loud funny, especially if you are a Southern woman,as I am.But some of it is downright difficult to read and the character of Vivi doesn't quite redeem herself in the same manner her screen counterpart does.It is however, a tale about the power of friendship and mother daughter relationships. It does not make Southern women seem stupid, as literature sometimes does. It has strong characters with flaws and is well written. It is sometimes a little confusing in how it switches so quickly from the past to the present and is long enough that you sometimes have to back track to remember what happened. Over all, though it is a good book, perfect for a week at the beach.
