World-building Bugs 1 Jan. 17th, 2008 at 10:49 AM Because I've been trying to spend less time online (with a varying degree of mostly not success), but I don't want to make my LJ too boring, I'm going to be writing up some posts on general writing topics. So here's the first: World-building Bugs If you're writing a culture with a low level of technology, whether it's 17th century or earlier, or all the way back to rocks and sticks, you have to re-think your automatic assumptions. One of the automatic assumptions that bugs me the most when I see it is the knowledge of the passage of time. Characters from cave-dwelling cultures will say something like "I'll meet you in fifteen minutes." No, you won't, because you shouldn't know what minutes are yet. If your culture has readily available accurate mechanical clocks, sure. If not, no. And even if it does, characters raised in this culture probably aren't going to have an instinctive feel for how long fifteen minutes is unless they're used to wearing watches. Making this mistake can be just a slip, but it can also show a problem in your world-building, in that you're not paying enough attention to thinking from your character's perspective, and what their specific experience would be as a person raised in the culture you created. It can also be a sign of a mistake that newer writers will make, especially if they're pushing themselves to write quickly (or at least that's when I always made it): you aren't thinking of what the character would do or say in that situation, you're thinking of what you would do or say in that situation.
