Herbert George Wells (1866-1946)
Biographical note
English novelist and social commentator, chiefly known as a founder of the science fiction genre. His early novels, called "scientific romances", invented a number of themes now classic in science fiction in such works as The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, and The War of the Worlds and are often thought of as being influenced by the works of Jules Verne. He also wrote other, non-fantastic novels which have received critical acclaim, including the satire on Edwardian advertising Tono-Bungay and Kipps. Wells also wrote non-fiction. His classic two-volume work The Outline of History (1920) set a new standard and direction for popularised scholarship. More ...

About this site
HG Wells Visionary novelist Nigel Cooper December 2001 HG Wells forecast 20th century society so accurately that he has been dubbed 'the man who invented tomorrow'. He is seen by many as the founding father of modern science fiction and was predicting the future long before people like Herman Kahn and Arthur C Clarke. He foresaw super-highways, overcrowded cities and television news broadcasts well in advance of their reality. This talent for prophecy was to prove most accurate, however, when regarding the machinery of war. Early life The youngest of three brothers, Herbert George Wells was born to a lower middle class family in Bromley, Kent. After breaking his leg as a child he had a period of convalescence in which to read. This was a passion that he would continue to indulge at the library of Uppark, the estate where his mother was a housekeeper. Ann Veronica Wells left the Norman school of Science in 1887 without completing his degree. But in 1890, after teaching in private schools for some years, he obtained an honours degree in biology from London University.

H.G. Wells and the Genesis of Future Studies
by W. Warren Wagar, Jan. 30, 1983
Printer page
Email article
The importance of H.G. Wells to the development of future studies lies not only in what he wrote, but in his influence on later thinkers. Historian and futurist W. Warren Wagar reviews the range of Wells's contributions to the discipline of future thinking.
Every field of study, like every nation, has its founding fathers and mothers. Figures of legend or of history, they help give the oncoming generations a sense of identity. They instill pride, confidence, and purposefulness. They supply standards by which to measure the performance of new practitioners.
Examples spring easily to mind. In modern physics, Galileo and Newton were the great path breakers; in economics, Adam Smith and the French physiocrats; in history as an academic discipline, Leopold von Ranke. But who "founded" the study of the future? Herman Kahn? Arthur C. Clarke? Bertrand de Jouvenel?

51. The Open Conspiracy
The Open Conspiracy, H. G. wells. CONTENTS. I The Present Crisis In Human Affairs; II - The Idea Of The Open Conspiracy; III - We Have To Clear And Clean
http://www.inlex.org/stories/wells/opencons.html
The Open Conspiracy H. G. Wells CONTENTS I - The Present Crisis In Human Affairs The world is undergoing immense changes. Never before have the conditions of life changed so swiftly and enormously as they have changed for mankind in the last fifty years. We have been carried along - with no means of measuring the increasing swiftness in the succession of events. We are only now beginning to realize the force and strength of the storm of change that has come upon us.
These changes have not come upon our world from without. No meteorite from outer space has struck our planet; there have been no overwhelming outbreaks of volcanic violence or strange epidemic diseases; the sun has not flared up to excessive heat or suddenly shrunken to plunge us into Arctic winter. The changes have come through men themselves. Quite a small number of people, heedless of the ultimate consequence of what they did, one man here and a group there, have made discoveries and produced and adopted inventions that have changed all the condition, of social life.
We are now just beginning to realize the nature of these changes, to find words and phrases for them and put them down. First they began to happen, and then we began to see that they were happening. And now we are beginning to see how these changes are connected together and to get the measure of their consequences. We are getting our minds so clear about them that soon we shall be able to demonstrate them and explain them to our children in our schools. We do not do so at present. We do not give our children a chance of discovering that they live in a world of universal change.
