THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW U.S. Musical Show One of television's most enduring musical series, The Lawrence Welk Show , was first seen on network TV as a summer replacement program in 1955. Although the critics were not impressed, Mr. Welk's show went on to last an astonishing 27 years. His format was simple: easy-listening music, what he referred to as "champagne music," and a "family" of wholesome musicians, singers, and dancers. The show ran on ABC for the first 16 years and was known in the early years as The Dodge Dancing Party. ABC canceled the show in 1971, not because of lack of popularity, but because it was "too old" to please advertisers. ABC's cancellation did little to stop Welk, who lined up more than 200 independent stations for a successful syndicated network of his own. Part of Welk's success can be attributed to his relationship with viewers. He meticulously compiled a "fever chart" which tallied pro and con comments received from viewers' letters. Performers with favorable comments became more visible on the show. In this way, the viewer also played an important role in his "family" of regulars. There were many show favorites throughout the years including the Lennon Sisters, who were brought to his attention by his son Lawrence Jr. who was dating Dianne Lennon in 1955. Other favorites included the Champagne Ladies (Alice Lon and Norma Zimmer); accordionist Myron Floren, who was also the assistant conductor; singer-pianist Larry Hooper; singers Joe Feeney and Guy Hovis; violinist Aladdin; dancers Bobby Burgess and Barbara Boylan; and Welk's daughter-in-law, Tanya Falan Welk.

MY SATURDAY AFTERNOON WITH THE WELKSTARS By JB Funky It has been a little bit over ten months since I saw a Welk show, and that was "Four Wunnerful Women," but by the time March rolled around, my second oppurtunity to see a live Lawrence Welk show had arrived! The Live Lawrence Welk Show, produced by Rocklands Entertainment, were slated to perform a Saturday matinee at the Stranahan Theater and I was excited to say the least. With everything prepared, such as my ticket, camera, and autograph gear in tow, on March 29, 2003...I was off to see the show! The Stranahan Theater in Toledo, Ohio Only a handful of my friends from Welknotes were able to attend, so that meant that I would represent myself on behalf here in Toledo. The show began with Ralna English, Mary Lou Metzger, Dick Dale, Jack Imel, Henry Cuesta, Ava Barber, accordinist Tim Padilla and Russian dancers Pasha and Ilona taking the stage with "That's Entertainment." From that point on...I knew this was going to be a great show. The Musical Family on the Toledo stage Henry Cuesta took the stage with his fine workmanship on the clarinet....and still knows how to dazzle an audience.

This recent observation by TV Guide helps to describe the timeless appeal of the bouncy blond who has been entertaining American audiences since her debut on The Lawrence Welk Show over 40 years ago. Castle began her career in Bakersfield, California, where she began singing, dancing and performing at the age of three. By age seven, she was studying classical piano and, at age ten, moved with her family to Ventura and started playing the accordion. She turned professional at the tender age of 15 working for such band leaders as country and western’s Tex Williams, Ina Ray Hutton and her All-Girl Orchestra, "King of Western Swing" Spade Cooley and Spike Jones. By age 17, she had formed her own band and was appearing regularly at the Dunes and Fremont Hotels in Las Vegas where she recorded her first album entitled "Accordion in Hi-Fi" for Roulette Records. When Welk heard the album, he immediately invited her to make the first of several guest appearances on his ABC-televised show—all before the age of 19! Two years later, Mr. Welk invited her back and, on her 20th birthday with millions of viewers watching, surprised her with an invitation to become a permanent member of his musical family.
