Book title: The Life and Loves of a She-Devil
Author: Fay Wheldon
Posted February 06, 2002
I was looking for lighter fare while working on my dissertation, so I picked up this book. Weldon's writing style is crisp and clean, making it a pure joy to read. But that was the only light thing about this book. Weldon tells the story of an ugly woman named Ruth, married to a man who never loved her. They have two children together, but the husband is continually unfaithful to Ruth. He is cruel to her in fact, no one has ever been kind to Ruth. He ultimately leaves her for another woman, and that's where the story gets interesting. Ruth takes her revenge on him in brutal, but oddly honest ways. The book is perplexing and asks many questions without answering them is Ruth really free? is she really strong? is she feminist? Or has her cruel husband merely warped her? Does she really take control, or is she merely responding to his view of the world? I wish I could have coffee with Weldon and ask her these questions but I suspect she would refuse to answer. Main

But a lot of this we are inured to we are so used to see the "beautiful people" in ads, for example, that nobody bats an eyelid when Andie McDowell or Heather Locklear turns up pushing a particular brand of hair colour shampoo. Fresh-faced 18-year-olds who wouldn't know a wrinkle if it came up and bit them on their petite upturned noses brandish pots of anti-aging cream in the faces of forty-somethings who, vulnerable and therefore gullible, buy the dream. It's the modern media, after all. Pick up a contemporary glossy magazine and you have to leaf through seven or ten pages of full-page glossy ads before you even get to the contents page. C'est la vie, we mutter, and plough on to leaven the reading matter from the BuyBuyBuy pages.
Publishing has, so far, remained relatively immune to this assault. There are exceptions; the industry journal Publisher's Weekly has taken to selling its cover to an advertiser who then has a fold-out ad on the first spread of the magazine itself but even this, although the thin edge of the egregious wedge, has so far been confined to advertising books and publishers. Keeping it in the family, so to speak.

Fay Weldon's Candid Autobiography - Reviews - Auto Da Fay - Book Review
Contemporary Review July, 2003 by Stephen Wade Auto Da Fay. Fay Weldon. Flamingo-HarperCollins. [pounds]15.99. 366 pages. ISBN 0-00-710992-X. Fay Weldon has never flinched from controversy and dissent: in fact she quite enjoys it. Not only has she written markedly direct and challenging fiction, she has also enjoyed such sidelines as producing a 'Counterblast' booklet and even television or radio debate. In some ways, this memoir is a counterblast to the usual plethora of writers' memoirs in which the sole alm appears to be to chronicle meetings with remarkable people, and tell anecdotes about artists and poets moving in particular circles. The only real circles here are those full of workers, travellers, entertainers and over-worked mothers.

Fay Weldon attacks library closures
Independent . The British Council's staff, and authors including award-winning novelist Fay Weldon, are furious at what they see as a "short-sighted" and "philistine" attitude to literature, after the council decided to divert book funding to the internet and other information services. Council research found that its target audience between the ages of 18 and 35 is less interested in borrowing books than surfing the internet. A programme of library closures around the world has led to accusations that the council is downgrading reading as a cultural pastime, and starving readers overseas of access to classic and modern British books. Council staff are unhappy at what they see as a "step too far", states the article. Countries targeted for library closures are Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal and, in Europe, Cyprus, Serbia, Georgia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Libraries have already closed in Kuwait, Turkey, Italy, Germany and Belgium. Weldon said: "It seems total madness. I believe the way to win hearts and minds is through literature that seals people's empathy with one another."

Fay Weldon brings smiles to humour conference
Fay Weldon discusses humour and writing. (Photo by Jonathan Dockar-Drysdale) Celebrated author and professor of creative writing Fay Weldon is the guest speaker at a University of Sussex conference that hopes to encourage serious study of humour. Entitled 'Joking Apart: Gender, Literature and Humour, 1850-Present', the two-day event on 28-29 June includes presentations on sexual differences in comedy, feminist "funny women", Freudian jokes, and the politics of laughter. Professor Weldon, author of more than 20 novels, including The Life and Loves of A She-Devil , as well as short stories, screenplays and journalism, says: "Humour is enormously important in people's lives. Women tend to use it as a defence mechanism to make things more tolerable, and it becomes more important the older you get. It keeps you young and healthy." She adds: "Academia is one of this country's great strengths, but we cannot rest on our laurels. If students were encouraged to study humour it might make them read more books."

Time For Creativity Young women especially have something invested in being nice people, and it's only when you have children that you realize you're not a nice person at all, but generally a selfish bully.

Although I have physical limitations, God blessed me with faith in Him, good intellect, loving family and friends. Of the many things that I enjoy, discussing theology is a favorite. I do believe that my nieces and nephews are an even bigger delight. I also enjoyed reading although I can't hold books anymore. There are alternatives though for example I enjoy reading classics through the e-mail.

By Nicola Leske FRANKFURT, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Novelist and screenwriter Fay Weldon's advice to aspiring writers is simple: "If you hate it, don't destroy it, leave it for a day and if you still hate it, it's probably pretty good." Weldon, who has penned more than 20 novels herself, said it takes her about a year to write a book and she recommends to "write before you think". "Just get rid of it and out of your head."

It is clear that no progressive feminist peers back at her from the mirror, at least not these days, as she puts forth a claim that a top-level career may be irreconcilable with sexual pleasure.
In What Makes Women Happy
I read a couple of posts about the book on a few feminist blogs and wondered why they would bother to write about the book, as it seems a rather transparent attempt to incite in order to promote.
I started thinking (I do that sometimes, usually late at night while watching really old movies) and remembered something Katherine Hepburn said in an old interview on biography channel.
Hepburn’s words stuck with me for a few years. It lingered long enough for me to ponder the truthfulness of her statement — all this despite the role models I had to disprove it all. What one hears (or reads in this sense, linguistically it doesn’t matter the effect is the same) becomes truth. It is possible then to assume reading a book by a fairly popular writer, in which she suggests a women should "fake it and get on with it," has some potential for becoming a fact for many who read it.
