Weldon was born Franklin Birkinshaw in Alvechurch Worcestershire England to a literary family, with both her maternal grandfather, Edgar Jepson ), and her own mother Margaret writing novels (the latter under the nom de plume Pearl Bellairs , alter-ego of the eponymous character in Aldous Huxley 's short story, "Farcical History of Richard Greenow"). Weldon spent the first years of her life in Auckland New Zealand , where her father worked as a doctor, but at the age of 14, after her parents' divorce, moved to England with her mother and her sister Jane, never to see her father again. She went to St Andrews Scotland to study psychology and economics but moved to London after giving birth to an illegitimate child. Soon afterwards she married her first husband, Ronald Bateman, a teacher 20 years her senior and not the natural father of her son, and started to live in

Fay Weldon BIO Back to top. ARTICLE For over thirty years, Fay Weldon has been chronicling the adventures of women - most of them damaged by men in some way - with spunk and style. Weldon's characters don't give in, they fight back with spectacular schemes that leave their would-be oppressors sputtering. Who can forget Ruth, the heroine of LIFE AND LOVES OF A SHE DEVIL, wreaking havoc on the lives of her ex-husband and his new wife? Or the amazing Alexandra Ludd, who discovers her marriage was a sham and sets out to right some serious wrongs in WORST FEARS? And in TROUBLE, when Spicer says to his wife, "The important thing for you, Annette, is not to think too much. Just accept," sparks fly. Faye Weldon grew up in New Zealand with her mother, sister, and grandmother. She has said that she "grew up believing the world was peopled by females." Perhaps it was this experience that gives her such insight into the war between the sexes. In addition to writing twenty novels, Weldon is also the author of a number of short story collections. Her most recent collection, WICKED WOMEN, is one of her best. Separate sections entitled "Tales of Wicked Women," "Tales of Wicked Men," and "Tales of Wicked Children," chronicle the ups and downs of modern family life.

If you are liked by other people, you tend to have a good life.
Women must get over their habitual anxiety and guilt.
An indomitable, resourceful mother can overcome any upheaval. The wrong marriage need not be a disaster. Even now, I can't explain why I married my first husband, a schoolmaster 20 years older, the sort of man who said "No wife of mine will ever work." When I left him, with my small son, I took charge of my own life. You marry when you don't want the other person to get away. If you just live together, one of you may be looking out to see if someone better comes along. When I met my second husband, Ron Weldon, the evening before my 30th birthday, it seemed a miracle. Then my writing life could begin.
The secret of living peacefully with stepchildren is to treat them like royalty, and only speak when spoken to.

WELDON, FAY British Writer Most widely known in Britain and abroad as an irreverent novelist usually concerned with women's issues, Fay Weldon has pursued a wide variety of projects for television, radio, and the stage. The daughter of a novelist, granddaughter of a Vanity Fair editor, and a niece to novelist/screenwriter/radio and television dramatist Selvyn Jepson, Weldon's first published novel in 1967 simply expanded upon her own 1966 teleplay for The Fat Woman's Joke . That teleplay had been written while Weldon was working as a highly successful copywriter for English print and television advertising; her previous work included the still remembered "Get to work on an egg" campaign. Following The Fat Woman's Joke , Weldon remained in advertising until the 1970s, yet she still produced the teleplays for productions such as A Catching Complaint (1966) and Poor Cherry While Weldon's real progress as a writer has often been traced back to the mid-1960s, it was in the early 1970s that she began fully to establish both her name and public voice. Where Weldon fit in British culture was another matter.
