Used by permission. Originally, when the first research was being done on the character pulps, Norvell Page was given credit for all of the novels that appeared in the Spider pulp under the name Grant Stockbridge, with the first two novels in the series being written by R.T.M. Scott. Page's identity as author was no major secret as it was listed in numerous writing digests and Henry Steeger had even written to several pulp fanzines mentioning Page as the Spider author. Scott was listed on the magazine for the first two novels and the character of The Spider (as well as the other major characters in the novels) closely resembled other Scott heroes. However, as time passed and research was done, some astonishing facts were uncovered. For one, Will Murray postulated that Reginald Maitland Scott was not the author of the first

Robert Weinberg, PhD
Interview with Robert Weinberg, PhD Weinberg is a founding member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. Weinberg and his colleagues discovered the first human cancer-causing gene, Ras. Weinberg has written and edited five books and more than 290 articles.
What have we learned about cancer since Nixon's war on cancer?
When Richard Nixon launched his war on cancer in 1970, there was a widespread belief that viruses were the cause of most kinds of human cancers and in fact, there was an enormous research program that was launched in the years that followed trying to track down these human cancer viruses.
In truth, that program largely failed because many kinds of human cancers have no viral associations at all. However, there was an enormous wealth of information that came from that almost in an unintended way, which revealed that there was another class of agents-cellular genes-that are indeed very important for creating the genesis of human cancers. These cellular genes came to be known as "proto-oncogenes," and are involved in regulating positively normal cell proliferation. They stimulate normal cells to grow when the tissue in the body needs them to grow.
In [1979], Harold Varmis and Mike Bishop first discovered this class of genes. These proto-oncogenes can become mutated when they reside in cells, and once they become mutated they can now be runaway growth-promoting genes. So they go from promoting a low level, slow amount of cell proliferation, to a very high level-they drive the cell to proliferate inexorably. And this unrelenting proliferation is one of the hallmarks of cancer cells.

Cornfield and Weinberg awarded Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professorships
BY KRISTA CONGER Kenneth Weinberg David Cornfield The Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health and the School of Medicine recently established two new endowed professorships. Kenneth Weinberg, MD, is the first holder of the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professorship in Pediatric Cancer and Blood Diseases, and David Cornfield, MD, is the first holder of the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professorship in Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine. The Professorship in Pediatric Cancer and Blood Diseases was established in February through a gift from Anne and Robert Bass. Matching funds were also contributed from the Campaign for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, which was led by the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health and The David and Lucile Packard Foundation. The Bass family requested that the first holder of the professorship be a member of the Department of Pediatrics whose research, teaching and/or clinical practice is focused on bone marrow transplantation. Subsequent holders of the professorship should specialize in pediatric hematology, oncology, or stem cell transplantation and be regarded by the medical community as forward thinking in their approach to cancer research or the provision of care to children with cancer. Weinberg comes to Packard Children's from Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, where he is the director of the hospital's clinical laboratory, division of bone marrow transplantation and research immunology and a professor of pediatrics and molecular microbiology and immunology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. In 2003 he received the H. Russell Smith Award for Innovation in Pediatric Biomedical Research for outstanding contributions to the field of pediatric immunology. He attended medical school at Stanford and completed his residencies in Montefiore Medical Center in New York and at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. He is board certified in pediatrics and in pediatric hematology/oncology. He will arrive at Packard Children's full-time in June to serve as the new director of pediatric stem cell transplantation.

Robert Weinberg,
Horror of the 20th Century:
An Illustrated History

(Collectors Press, 2000)
Robert Weinberg and Collectors Press have created a gorgeous volume about horror fiction that should be on every horror fan's shelf if you can find a shelf high enough. This is a coffeetable book in the sense that you could put four legs on it and have a coffee table. It measures close to a whopping 14" by 11", and though that size may strike some as a bit overboard, just wait until you see some of the book jackets and pulp covers enlarged to that size, particularly with the splendid printing processes used here. Though the text is excellent, the visuals are the big selling point of this book, and also account for its equally hefty $60 price tag. There are 450 color reproductions contained in its 256 pages, and they are utter gems. For me, as a pulp magazine devotee, the most delicious chapters were those on the horror pulps of the 1920s and 1930s, with page after page of covers from Weird Tales Terror Tales Horror Stories and many other titles. What makes these reproductions so delectable is that they were either shot from gem mint copies of these rarities, or have been digitally altered so that they appear to be newsstand mint, as does every other magazine, paperback, comic book and dust jacket to appear here. When we go to Collectors' Heaven, all items will appear this way, with nary a thumb crease, edge overhang tear or spine wrinkle in sight! By golly, it's heaven right here on earth!
