Robert Weinberg
Robert Weinberg is a professor of biology and the Daniel K. Ludwig professor of cancer research at MIT, a founding member of the Whitehead Institute and an associate member at the Broad Institute. His research focuses on the molecular and cellular determinants of malignant progression — the ability of cancer cells to invade and metastasize — which is programmed by a series of transcription factors that normally work during embryonic stages to regulate epithelial-to-mesenchymal transitions. In cancer cells, the expression of these transcription factors is induced by signals from nearby cells. A particular focus of his laboratory’s work is to understand how tumors recruit neighboring stromal cells, which, once in place within the tumor, release signals that elicit cancer cells to undergo epithelial-to-mesenchymal transitions. Two researchers whose pivotal discoveries have advanced progress against cancer by revealing vital information about the nature, origins and treatment of the disease are being honored with the 2006 Landon-AACR Prizes for Basic and Translational Cancer Research.
These prizes, offered by the Kirk A. and Dorothy P. Landon Foundation and the American Association for Cancer Research, are the largest awarded to cancer researchers by a professional society of their peers. Each winner will receive an unrestricted cash award of $200,000, and will present successive scientific lectures at the AACR Annual Meeting, in Washington, D.C.,beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 3, 2006, in Hall D of the Washington

2007-2008 BCRF Project:
The ability of breast cancer cells to thrive and proliferate at various locations throughout the human body depends on their ability to recruit normal supporting (stromal) cells from the bone marrow. This recruitment depends on the ability of the breast cancer cells to stimulate the bone marrow to release such supporting cells into the circulation, making them available for recruitment by the breast cancer. Dr. Weinberg's laboratory has discovered one of the signals that primary breast tumors release to stimulate the bone marrow. They would like to determine over the next year the nature of the cells in the bone marrow that are stimulated by this signal and mobilized into the circulation as well as the identities of the support (stromal) cell types that are recruited from the circulation into the tumor-associated stroma. The ability of the cancer cells in a primary breast tumor to metastasize is influenced by one type of bone marrow cell, which is recruited into the tumor mass and, once present, stimulates the breast cancer cells to move actively and metastasize. They would like to know the identity of the signal(s) that are released by breast cancer cells and impinge upon nearby recruited bone marrow-derived stromal cells, inducing the latter to release invasion/metastasis-provoking signals within the primary breast tumor mass.

Tools One Renegade Cell The Society of Cells: Cancer and the Control of Cell Proliferation by Carlos Sonnenschein and Ana M. Soto, BIOS Scientific, £18.95, ISBN 1859962769 IS CANCER caused by "one renegade cell"? Robert Weinberg. a molecular biologist at MIT in Boston, has written a riveting book suggesting just that. In his view, our bodies are rather uneasy coalitions of individualistic cells, each with an agenda and strong memories of ancestral independence in the primeval soup. "Granting autonomy to trillions of worker cells invites chaos," says Weinberg. 'The danger lies in the absence of an overseeing master builder.' All goes well when cells are well-behaved and public-spirited, but let one cell decide to run amok, and cancer is the result. In gripping prose and ripe metaphor, Weinberg tells the story of the hunt for the enemy hidden within the genetic programme of cancerous cells. It's not been an easy ride. What looked like a big breakthrough came in the 1970s with the discovery of proto-oncogenes that mutate into oncogenes, then stimulate cells to proliferate uncontrollably. Good genes gone bad became the elusive quarry of cancer scientists.

How Cancer Begins Play Now Email to a Friend SPEAKER: Robert A. Weinberg Founding Member, MIT Center for Cancer Research Member, Whitehead Institute Daniel K. Ludwig and American Cancer Society Professor for Cancer Research Department of Biology ABOUT THE LECTURE: If you’re worried about getting cancer, do yourself a favor: steer clear of red meat and rich foods, and avoid cigarettes. In this lecture, Robert Weinberg provides the scientific basis for this commonplace advice, as well as a layman’s look at the genetic, biochemical and environmental factors that make good cells go bad. Normal cells are civic-minded, lining up together in a precise architecture that gives structure to body tissue. When the cell’s genes are damaged, they send out faulty instructions, turning orderly structure into a chaotic mess. This kind of injury to cells likely comes from the outside – as many as 90% of human cancers are due to bad diets and smoking. Weinberg wants to understand the specific pathways by which the cells’ enemies invade and do their damage, in hopes of then being able to halt the process and freeze a cancer’s growth. But, cautions Weinberg, better to count on prevention than a cure in the fight against cancer. ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
